Two cases of swine flu detected in city

CHENNAI: Doctors said two patients have tested positive for the H1N1 virus in Chennai, in the first reported cases of swine flu in the state in 18 months. King Institute of Preventive Medicine, Guindy, on Thursday confirmed the contagion in samples taken from the patients.

King Institute director (in-charge) P Gunasekaran said the department of virology had found two samples positive for H1N1. The patients have been prescribed Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and domestic quarantine.

In the first case of a swine flu death in Tamil Nadu in two years, a 72-year-old farmer from a village near the textile hub of Tirupur died of the H1N1 virus on Saturday.

With reports of swine flu cases trickling in from Chennai and Coimbatore ? two fresh cases have been reported in Chennai ? the state Health Department has sounded an alert and asked all government hospitals to be prepared for mass screening of patients.

Coimbatore: A 70-year-old man has died of suspected swine flu in the city.

Kandasamy of Kangeyam in neighbouring Tirupur District was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for symptoms of fever and throat pain for a fortnight and shifted to the government hospital here last night when his condition worsened.

A 75-year-old farmer from Tirupur reportedly died due to A(H1N1) influenza, commonly called swine flu, here on Saturday evening, at a time when similar cases are being reported in Chennai. This was the first case this year reported in Kovai though the patient was from the neighbouring district.

Kandasamy, a resident of Kavundampalayam, in Kangeyam, Tirupur, was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore for respiratory complaints two weeks ago. Later, the blood sample tested at a private lab confirmed that he was infected with swine flu.

COIMBATORE: The death of a 75-year-old farmer from Tirupur district has been confirmed as the first swine flu fatality in the state in the last two years.

C Kandasamy, a farmer from Poolakkattu Thottam village in Tirupur district, was admitted to a private hospital after complaining of fever and throat pain a fortnight ago. After failing to respond to treatment, he was tested for swine flu. The test results showed positive after which he was shifted to Coimbatore Medical College on Saturday, where he was declared brought dead.

No new cases of swine flu

After four cases of swine flu that were recorded in the past two days, no fresh case of the condition was reported in the city on Sunday. The Chennai Corporation-run Communicable Diseases Hospital (CDH) in Tondiarpet and the King Institute of Preventive Medicine in Guindy did not report any new cases of A (H1N1).

On Sunday, the civic body's Health Department staff conducted a search operation to locate two children aged 10 and 8 whose nasopharyngeal swab, collected earlier by a team from King Institute at Stanley Hospital, tested positive. ?The address given in the register is wrong. We tried to locate the address from the mobile number given, butwe reached a dead end. ,? said a CDH source.

Victim?s wife, son-in-law admitted at CMCH

COIMBATORE: While the health department officials still claim that the death of 75-year-old farmer afflicted with H1N1 on Saturday in the city was an isolated case, two immediate family members of the victim was admitted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) late Monday evening after they complained of slight fever, throat irritation and body ache. They are expected to be tested for H1N1 infection on Tuesday.

"We came to get my mother-in-law tested for H1N1 as she is old and also complained of throat ache and slight fever. But, since I also have slight fever, we have been asked to get admitted today and the test will be conducted tomorrow," said M Vetrivel, son-in-law of C Kandasamy, who died of H1N1 infection here late Saturday evening.

M Vetrivel (29), a Bangalore-based software engineer, and his mother-in-law Kaveri (60) arrived at the CMCH at around 4pm on Monday. After an initial round of check up at the casualty section, the doctors ordered for their admission to the hospital and further tests to be conducted on them to confirm whether they were infected with the disease.

Private hospitals asked to report A (H1N1) cases

The Department of Public Health on Monday asked private hospitals in Coimbatore to report to it cases of A (H1N1) influenza, after a 75-year-old man from Tirupur district died here on Sunday. Surveillance has been tightened in both Coimbatore and Tirupur districts.

At a meeting with the heads of major hospitals, Joint Director of Public Health Sukumaran and Deputy Director S. Senthilkumar said private healthcare centres could also create isolation wards to treat flu cases. But, they must ensure that their medical and paramedical personnel had enough protection from the flu virus.

The special ward at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital was also in a state of preparedness and a special team of doctors and paramedical staff was formed on Monday to deal with any spurt.

Doctors learn virus is sly operator

Doctors and scientists suspect that the H1N1 virus has learned to survive the Chennai summer, possibly because of mutations.Health minister V S Vijay held a review meeting at the secretariat on Monday to discuss the state's preparedness for the viral infection.

Senior doctors and health department officials who met at the secretariat said the government will soon roll out guidelines that will ask doctors to rule out the viral infection when patients come with symptoms that last for more than three days. It will also warn doctors about the virus's enhanced ability to survive in high temperatures. In 2009, when the virus hit India, scientists said it was active in winter and wouldn't survive extreme summer, but now the infection is spreading even when the mercury has touched 35 degrees Celsius.

Directorate of Public Health officials said five of the 13 H1N1 cases reported in the state were from Chennai. Seven were from Coimbatore and one from Tirupur. In the last four years, H1N1 has claimed 39 lives in Tamil Nadu including one from Tirupur on Saturday. Officials say that the number of people getting infected has declined in the past few years. "In almost all cases, deaths occurred due to delay in diagnosis," said director of public health Dr R T Porkai Pandian said.

Coimbatore, Apr 4 (PTI) A man, with suspected H1N1 Infleunza (Swine Flu), was admitted to the Government Hospital here today from nearby Tirupur district. The man was suffering from fever and throat pain for the last 10 days and on suspicion he was brought to the government hospital and kept in isolated ward, hospital sources said. A 75-year old man from Kangeyam in Tirupur district, died of swine flu a week ago, after undergoing treatment for a fortnight in a private hospital.

Four new patients test positive for H1N1 virus


The number of swine flu cases in the city has gone up to eight with four new patients testing positive on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, an exclusive 20-bed ward to treat swine flu patients was opened at the Rajiv Government General Hospital on Wednesday.

A few days back, an elderly farmer from Tirupur, who was diagnosed with the A(HINI) virus, had died following which the state was put on high alert.

On Tuesday, two men and two women from various parts of the city like Saidapet, Ambattur and Taramani were diagnosed with the flu, taking the number of positive cases to eight. They are currently undergoing treatment at private hospitals.

Throat swabs of 17 students sent for swine flu test

Chennai Corporation health officials on Wednesday sent the throat swabs of 17 students of a Chennai School in Korukkupet, who were found to have cold and cough, to the King Institute of Preventive Medicine for investigation. The screening was conducted following confirmation a few days ago that two girls, who were brought to the Government Stanley Hospital, had tested positive for A (H1N1) influenza.

On learning that the girls, who had exhibited mild symptoms of the flu, were studying in the Korukkupet Chennai School, the Corporation officials screened 300 schoolchildren. Meanwhile, a 53-year-old man from Perumanallur in Tiruppur district tested positive for A (H1N1) infection on Wednesday and is currently undergoing treatment. According to Director of Public Health R.T. Porkai Pandian, 25,000 doses of intramuscular injection have been procured from the Central government.

New H1N1 case reported in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Barely four days after the death of a 75 year old man due to H1N1 infection, a fresh H1N1 case has been reported in the city late Tuesday night. The patient, N Bommainaicker, a 52-year-old man from Tirupur district was immediately referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where he is being treated in quarantine at the moment. Hospital authorities say his condition is stable and he's responding to treatment.

C Kandasamy who succumbed to the infection on Saturday evening also hailed from Tirupur district but was a resident of Kavundampalayam near Koduvai while Bommainaicker is a resident of Koolapatti near Perumanaloor, separated by a distance of more than 40 km. The district health services department conducted a review meeting with both government and private hospital doctors and has instructed them to be on high alert regarding patients coming in with fever and sore throat symptoms.

Girl tests positive for A (H1N1) flu in Coimbatore


A girl aged four-and-a-half was admitted to the isolation ward of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Thursday after she tested positive for A (H1N1) influenza. A 55-year-old man from the neighbouring Tirupur District is already undergoing treatment in the ward, while a 79-year-old man from that district died last Sunday of the flu at the CMCH.

Public health authorities, however, are not seeing any chance of an outbreak, despite three cases being reported in less than a week. They contend that the flu virus is already in the community owing to previous occurrences since 2009. Only sporadic cases is different groups will occur and not as a cluster.

The condition of the man and the girl is stable, the authorities said. Contact treatment ? providing oseltamivir tablets to all those who were in close contact with the patients ? is being done. Health authorities in Tirupur carried out this process with the relatives of the man who died of the flu and also the man undergoing treatment in Coimbatore. The authorities in Coimbatore identified the relatives and other close contacts of the girl?s family at Kovilpalayam and began treatment soon after the case was established as positive.

CHENNAI: Two more people, including a six-month-old, tested positive for the H1N1 virus in the city on Thursday taking the number of H1N1 cases to 12 in the last three months. With another four-year-old child also diagnosed with the flu, the total number of affected people in the state has gone up to 23.

A 36-year-old man from Thiruvallur, who tested positive late on Wednesday night, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the city. The man, who was working as a driver for a family, had been suffering from fever and cough for three days. When antibiotics did not work, the private clinic he visited sent his throat swabs for a test. Officials say the driver did have a travel history, but details were not available. Health officials visited the family he worked for, but they are not showing any symptoms. "He is responding well to treatment. The symptoms of cough and fever have become milder," said an official of the directorate of public health (DPH).

The infant who tested positive for H1N1 is being quarantined at home and administered powdered oseltamivir. The oseltamivir syrup that is administered to patients below the age of five continues to be unavailable. "The tablets are being powdered, reduced in dosage and mixed with water and administered," said officials from the health department. Children below five years of age form the high-risk category for the virus.

COIMBATORE/TIRUPUR: A 65-year-old farmer from Tirupur is being treated for swine flu (H1N1) in the isolation ward of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH).
Pommu Naiker of Nathakattupudur in Ward 19 of Tirupur Corporation was confirmed to be infected by the H1N1 virus at a private hospital in Coimbatore on Tuesday night. He was brought to the CMCH around 10 p.m. The test was done at a private laboratory.
?We will treat him for one week in the hospital where we have ventilator and oxygenation facilities,? said Sivaprakasham, Resident Medical Officer, CMCH.
Naiker had been suffering from fever and throat pain for 10 days. After initial treatment at a hospital in Tirupur, he was shifted to a private hospital in Coimbatore.
After three days here, the swab test for the H1N1 virus was found to be positive. Troubled by lung infection for long, Naicker had been taking treatment at the private hospital in Coimbatore hospital for 15 years. ?Besides, being elderly, his immunity level is low. Such people are more prone to infection,? said Sivaprakasham.
Health Department officials have acted fast to take preventive measures as this is the second such case in Tirupur district. On Sunday, Kandhasamy (70) of Neelikoundanpalayam near Kangayam died of swine flu.

First H1N1 case found in Coimbatore city

COIMBATORE: Prevalence of H1N1 infection in the city has been confirmed for the first time with a 27-year-old cab driver from Seeranaickenpalayam admitted to Coimbatore Medical College on Friday night.

Ramesh of Jagdish Nagrar in Seeranaickenpalayam was diagnosed positive for the H1N1 test conducted at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and is being treated at the quarantine ward of CMCH along with four-year-old Athishta and 52-year-old Bommanaicker from Tirupur, who were diagnosed for the infection earlier this week.

The public health department is expected to start fresh vaccination drive to prevent spreading of the disease. All health department and medical staff who are in close contact with the patients would be administered the vaccine in the first phase of the drive.

"The patient is undergoing treatment at the moment and his condition is stable. He has not travelled on any long distance recently. We are taking precautionary measures at the moment," said Dr S Senthilkumar, deputy director, public health services, Coimbatore.

Clinics, labs profit from H1N1 panic

With the state government struggling to break the chain of transmission of A(H1N1) virus, private players seem to be jumping in the fray to make a quick buck at the expense of panicked people.

Private laboratories have started offering dubious H1N1 tests and fleecing patients who would rather pay for their test than visit an overcrowded government facility.

?Private labs and clinics offer a ?card? swine flu test that is unreliable. It is infamous for showing false positives and false negative results and both can be dangerous for a patient. The test costs only around Rs 300, but patients are charged from Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 for this questionable test,? said Dr V. S. Vijay, Tamil Nadu health minister.

Tamil Nadu sitting on swine flu tinderbox

Chennai is sitting on a swine flu volcano waiting to erupt.

While A(H1N1) virus has infected 29 people in the state, leaving one 74 year old man dead, public health experts are apprehensive about the virulent activity of the virus despite soaring summer mercury and dry climes.

?The swine flu virus is believed to thrive only in wet weather and low temperatures. Viruses mutate every year, and A(H1N1) virus has undergone an antigenic shift to be able to survive in such warm weather. As a result, the public will also have lowered immunity against this changed strain. And so everybody needs to be on the alert,? says Dr S. Elango, vice president of Indian Public Health Association.


The situation in Tamil Nadu looks grim?most of the people infected have had no travel history, implying that the virus is very much prevalent in the state. And it does not appear as if the health department has control over preventing and treating the influenza.

At a press conference on Saturday, state health minister V.S. Vijay announced that the government had procured 25,000 doses of swine flu vaccine from the Central government to immunize government doctors and nurses across Chennai and Coimbatore.

H1N1 screening begins at railway stations, airport

CHENNAI: The response to the H1N1 virus screening centres was lukewarm on day 1. Of the several lakh people arriving in the city via the airport and Central and Egmore railway stations on Sunday, just 300 people volunteered to get examined.

Health and corporation officials hope the numbers will increase from Monday following announcements on loudspeakers and in the media. One passenger at Egmore station was asked to do a throat swab test at King Institute.
