CHENNAI: Three members of a family tested positive for H1N1 on Monday. Officials from the health department say the source of the infection could be a private hospital in Sastri Nagar in Adyar and have recommended vaccination for doctors, nurses and paramedical staff there. With this, the total number of H1N1 cases in the state has gone up to 32, including 17 from Chennai, director of public health Dr RT Porkai Pandian said.

2 city kids infected with swine flu virus

CHENNAI: Two children in the city were found to be infected with the swine flu virus, taking the total number of H1N1 patients in the state to 32. According to well placed sources in the Health Department, a three-year-old boy from Mylapore and an 11-year-old girl from Royapettah were admitted with flu symptoms. As soon as the test results were found to be postitive, they were administered with the necessary drugs and kept in the swine flu ward. Corporation health officials and workers attached to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare visited both patients and reviewed their progress.

An official confirmed the prognosis that their health was well under control and that there was nothing to worry about, ?The children are responding well. All the others who have been diagnosed with (A)H1N1 are also recovering well and care has been taken to see that they are safe in isolated wards,? said a senior health official.

SIX TEST POSITIVE

On Tuesday, six persons in the State, including a seven-month-old child, tested positive for A(H1N1) influenza, bringing the total to 39 cases. Two persons were reported to be infected with the virus in Chennai, while in Coimbatore all the four cases reported were from the Corporation's jurisdiction.

According to Director of Public Health R.T. Porkai Pandian the cases were reported from Chennai and Coimbatore. In Chennai a 44-year-old man from Saligramam had tested positive for the flu and a seven-month-old baby was found infected by a private hospital.

CHENNAI: Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said that all the 12 private labs authorised by the government to conduct swine flu tests, were strictly told not to collect any extra charges from the patients apart from Rs 3,000 fixed for the same. Intervening the discussion on the special mention on swine flu in the State Assembly, the CM said members of the House had wanted the government to conduct the swine flu test free of cost as the poor would not be able to afford it. But, the fact was that the test had already been done free of cost in many places including� King?s Institute in Guindy and Government Medical College Hospitals in Coimbatore, Madurai and Tirunelveli.

Chennai private hospital hides Swine Flu case


The Corporation of Chennai issued a notice to Menangudy Hospital in Shastri Nagar for failing to notify it about a patient suspected to have the H1N1 virus. Earlier all hospitals were asked to report all swine flu cases to the authorities. The total number of cases in Chennai have gone up to 18.The notice was issued under the Public Health Act 1939. Corporation officials said though the hospital had observed that one of their employees had flu-like symptoms on April 5 and sent her throat swab for testing to King Institute, it had not informed the corporation about the case. Two days later, her daughter and nephew tested positive. Officials said the children could have been protected if they had been informed and were more vigilant.

On Tuesday morning, health minister V S Vijay appealed to the public not to panic. ?With the ?effective? measures adopted by the government, the disease is under control in the state,? he said.

Four from TN test positive to H1N1 at JIPMER

PUDUCHERRY: A total of four cases of swine flu have been reported from JIPMER. These include three women and a 10-month-old baby girl from Tamil Nadu. According to sources, two women aged 21 and� 29 from Villupuram and a 32-year-old woman from another TN district, tested positive for H1N1 on April 9 and April 7. While the 21-year-old had been referred from the Pondicherry Institute of Medical sciences (PIMS), the 29-year-old was an OPD (Out Patient Department) case at JIPMER.

The 32-year-old woman was admitted to the medicine ward of JIPMER, but was subsequently taken to the Apollo Hospital for treatment, sources said.

The 10-month-old baby from Vriddhachalam, also an OPD case, was detected with the virus on March 17 at JIPMER.At present, no swine flu cases are admitted in JIPMER for treatment.From the government hospitals in Puducherry, four throat swabs were sent to JIPMER for testing two days ago, but all tested� negative, Dr VV Rao, Deputy Director (Public Health) and nodal officer for Swine Flu, told ?Express? on Wednesday.

CHENNAI: A day after the number of people affected with swine flu in the state hit 50, the health department has sent out speedy assurances that none of them are in mortal danger. According to director of Public Health Porkai Pandian, all the cases had been diagnosed and the treatment administered with practised ease. As all health workers, doctors and others in the healthcare industry have been immunized against AH1N1 virus, the risk of secondary infection was very low, he said.

A 23-year-old pregnant woman of Sabbavaram and a 26-year-old person of Kancharapalem area in the city have been battling the disease for the past few days. The cases were confirmed on Monday. The pregnant woman's condition is said to be critical.

One new case of swine flu in city

Coimbatore, Apr 17 (PTI): A lorry driver in the city Corporation tested positive for swine flu and has been admitted to the Govenrment Medical College Hospital here. The 40-year old man, with symptoms of A (H1N1) influenza, immediately got himself tested at the hospital yesterday and was kept in isolation ward, after he tested positive, hospital sources said today. His family members were given preventive treatment to prevent the spread the virus. The seven other persons, who were being treated for swine flu for the last 10 days, including two kids, were discharged a couple of days ago, the sources said.

CHENNAI: A 22-year-old student, who was admitted to a private hospital in the city with the H1N1 virus, died of respiratory complications on Monday, the first death due to the contagion in the city this year. Doctors said Niveditha was put on ventilator for more than a week and was given medication, including oseltamivir, the drug used to treat patients with the virus.

The article is ambiguous, but it seems that the teenaged fatality, the 20 yo Niveda and the 22 yo Niveditha mentioned in the post above may all be the same case.

Villupuram (TN): A teen aged girl died of swine flu and one Kandasamy (74) belonging to Kangeyeam died recently due to swine flu, following his death, necessary measures were taken by district health officials to curb the disease.

The district head quarters hospitals were prepared with quarantine for swine flu and provided with antiviral drug tamiflu. So far 29 persons were admitted for swine flu in district government hospitals.

Nearly 400 health staff including doctors were vaccinated for swine flu as a precautionary measure, 7 persons including 2 children were treated for swine flu and discharged in Coimbatore government hospital.

1 in TN, 5 in Pondy test positive for H1N1

MADURAI/PUDUCHERRY: A sexagenarian from Madurai and five persons from Puducherry, including one from Karaikal, have tested positive for H1N1.

In Madurai, Kaliammal (60) of Melamasi Street, who was admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital, tested positive for swine flu on Wednesday.

Kaliammmal was admitted to the hospital with cold and cough. Doctors sent her throat swabs for tests, which revealed she was infected with swine flu. She was kept in isolation at a ward in the hospital. It may be noted that, this is the first case testing positive for swine flu in Madurai this year.

Vignesh Ramanan (7) and Anand C (25), a doctor, both from Puducherry, were among the five who tested positive for swine flu at JIPMER on Monday.

Two others who tested positive had been referred from the Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute, while another one was referred from Karaikal.

Four of the five patients who were detected were treated as OPD patients. The fifth person has been admitted to JIPMER.

The identity of the person from Karaikal who tested positive has not been revealed. Further details would be known on Thursday.

Girls death not entirely due to swine flu?


CHENNAI: Though 22-year-old Niveditha has been listed as the second victim of the H1N1 virus in the state, senior health officials have indicated that there are some inconsistencies that were reported with her case. The post-graduate student from Villupuram developed high fever on March 30 and was taken to the Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on April 2, for treatment. After she exhibited symptoms of swine flu, doctors there took a swab and sent it for testing to JIPMER on April 6. ?Two days before that, they started her on tamiflu on the suspicion that she had the disease,? explained Director of Public Health, RT Porkai Pandian, while seeking to paint a clearer picture.

Even before the test results were out, she was brought to a private hospital in Chennai, while on a ventilator, as she had some serious respiratory complications. ?Her test results from Puducherry returned on April 9 and said that she had tested positive for AH1N1. So, we intimated the hospital in Chennai,? said another well-placed official in the Health Department. Though she was on a ventilator, doctors treated her for swine flu even as they sent another throat swab to the King Institute. However, that test had apparently returned negative late last week, much to the doctors befuddlement. ?They went ahead and treated her on the assumption that she had the disease, but her respiratory condition worsened and she passed away on Monday (April 16),? he explained.

H1N1 scare across south as woman dies of fever

MADURAI: The H1N1 scare has spread in southern districts as a woman died of a 'mysterious' fever in Tirunelveli while another woman got admitted in the special ward of the Madurai government hospital with symptoms of H1N1 on Thursday. A middle-aged woman succumbed to fever in Kadayanallur in Tirunelveli district, causing panic in the region. Raheema (37), wife of Abdul Majeed from Kadayanallur, was admitted with fever in a private hospital at Tenkasi last week and she was referred to a private hospital in Tirunelveli on Monday where she died on Tuesday. Her death caused widespread panic in the region as the local people claim that more than 40 people died in 2009 due to some mystery fever.

State govt sets up hotline for H1N1

CHENNAI: The state health department has set up a special telephone line for dissemination of information on H1N1 flu, as four more cases were reported from Cuddalore and Karur. Experts will be available round the clock on 044-24350496.

So far two people have died in the state and 58 people have been tested positive. Health department and corporations will hold a series of awareness programmes for doctors. "The guidelines released by the centre for H1N1 treatment in 2009 is still valid as the centre has confirmed there is no mutation of the virus," said director of public health RT Porkai Pandian.

Four more test positive for H1N1

CHENNAI: Even as four more persons across the state contracted swine flu on Thursday, the health department has declared that they are on the ?war-path? against the dreaded virus.
Two persons from Cuddalore and two from Karur, incidentally from the same two families in their respective towns, returned positive test results for (A)H1N1, confirmed Director of Public Health R T Porkai Pandian. However, as all of them were aged between 19-41, the onset of the symptoms was not a cause for worry and they are responding to treatment, he informed.
One bit of good news is that of the 58 infected, only nine remain in the quarantine wards. ?All the others have responded well to treatment and are either in home quarantine or have recovered enough,? said Pandian. The same holds good for the two men from Karur, who have been placed in quarantine at home. The duo from Cuddalore, meanwhile, are undergoing treatment at SRMC, here in Chennai.

5 new cases of A(H1N1) reported in city, suburbs
Total number of cases goes up to 36

Five new cases of swine flu were reported in the city and suburbs on Sunday taking the total up to 36 cases of A (H1N1).

Of the five, one 31-year-old pregnant woman has been admitted to the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Egmore. She is from M.S. Nagar and has been kept in the isolation ward.

In the State, the total number of cases moved to 73 cases which includes, Coimbatore with 18 cases, Tiruppur 5, Cuddalore and Madurai 3 each and Karur and Tiruvallur 2 each.

Two new cases of a mother and a 4-month-old baby were reported on Sunday in Tiruppur. They have been kept in home quarantine.

7 new cases of H1N1 in Tamil Nadu, 4 from Chennai

CHENNAI: Just as the state started training doctors in the districts to deal with H1N1 infections, four more people tested positive for the virus in the city on Sunday, along with three others in the districts, taking the number of people affected in Tamil Nadu to 64 this year.

All four cases in Chennai, including a 17-month-old child, were reported from the suburbs. The child, who is reportedly responding well to treatment, is in home quarantine with the family in Thiruvottiyur. The other three patients including a woman, 31, and two men aged 19 and 23, are being administered oseltamivir.

The woman, from MS Nagar, has been quarantined at Government Hospital for Women & Children in Egmore. One of the men, from Valsaravakkam, is undergoing treatment at Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre, while the other, from Mangadu, is in home quarantine, said director of public health R T Porkai Pandian.

The Women and Children Hospital and the Sri Ramchandra Medical Centre is stocked with oseltamivir tablets, said city health officer P Kuganantham. Of the seven cases, two cases were reported from Tirupur and one from Tiruvallur.

35-year old woman succumbs to swine flu in TN

A 35-year old woman, who tested positive for swine flu, died at the government general hospital here on Monday, becoming the second (Third, see posts 30&31 above - Ro) victim of the A(H1N1) virus in recent weeks in Tamil Nadu.

"The woman tested positive for swine flu virus and she died this evening," a senior health department official said.

Health Minister wants private hospitals to start Tamiflu early

With all three A (H1N1) deaths in Tamil Nadu reported from private healthcare institutions, the government has advised them to raise their index of suspicion about such cases and not wait for test results before treating patients with Tamiflu.

Speaking to The Hindu, Health Minister V.S. Vijay said that the deaths in private institutions were a cause of concern, particularly because they could be easily avoided by starting treatment early. Private hospitals must begin to treat patients with Tamiflu even where there is suspicion based on clinical parameters, and patient's account of symptoms.

?Deaths are because of late intervention. Tamiflu will work only during the initial phase of the condition, not when the viral load increases ? after three days. When hospitals wait for the results to come (It can take days to produce results from swabs taken from suspected A(H1N1) patients), it delays treatment and thus can lead to death,? Dr. Vijay said.
