Tamil Nadu steps up surveillance to staunch spread of H1N1

CHENNAI: The death of a 25-year-old woman of H1N1 in Kasaragod on Thursday, which pushed fatalities from the disease in Kerala to five this year, has prompted the Tamil Nadu health department to intensify fever surveillance to stem the spread of the virus in the state.

Tamil Nadu has recorded 19 H1N1 cases since January, just 12 less than Kerala's 31.

Officials from the DPH said there was no outbreak of H1N1. "The surveillance system is monitored by local health inspectors," an official said. "We have instructed all private and government hospitals to inform the health department in case patients they are treating develop unusual fever patterns."

There has been a rise in the number of patients with fevers from respiratory illness after the recent rainfall, a senior health official said. "But there is no reason to panic as we have the situation under control," he said.

Suspected Swine Flu Case in Dharmapuri Hospital

DHARMAPURI: A suspected A(H1N1) swine flu case has been reported at the Government Dharmapuri Medical College Hospital (GDMCH) here on Wednesday and the samples of the patient have been sent for tests to the Kings Institute in Chennai.

Sources said that Selvaraj (47), a resident of Sundeakuppam village in the Krishnagiri district, was admitted to a private hospital in Krishnagiri on November as he was running temperature, cough and respiratory problems for the past two weeks. Subsequently, he was referred to a private hospital in Coimbatore. As Selvaraj failed to respond to the treatment at the Coimbatore hospital too, he was discharged.

Since the fever did not subside, he visited a private hospital in Salem from where he was referred to GDMCH.

Woman tests positive for swine flu

COIMBATORE: A 40-year-old woman from Kottaimedu has tested positive for the H1N1 virus earlier this week. The public health department which was notified on Friday has been monitoring the woman's health closely and says she is recovering. The corporation is now working on tracking the woman's contacts and checking for signs of fever and sore throat.

The woman and her son had travelled to Kerala for a small vacation, said the public health department officials. "They got admitted into G Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital on December 7 with symptoms of high fever with sore throat and cough. Their samples were submitted for the H1N1 test on December 11, where it turned positive for the mother," said the deputy director of public health Dr A Somasundaram. "We were notified immediately and have been visiting the patient regularly," he added.

Swine Flu Patient?s Son Too in Hosp with H1N1 Symptoms



COIMBATORE : The son of an swine flu patient is being suspected of having contracted the same disease.

Last week, a 40-year-old woman, of Kottaimedu near Town Hall, was admitted to a private hospital in Coimbatore. The woman had visited her relative?s house in Kerala earlier. After conducting tests, doctors suspected her of being affected by H1N1. On Saturday, it was confirmed that she had contracted the disease. Now, her son has also been admitted to the same hospital on suspicion of H1N1.

The Deputy Director of TN Health Department, Somasundaram, declined to confirm the disease and said that test samples were sent to Kings Institute, Chennai for confirmation. However, when Express visited the private hospital, the ward staff confirmed that the minor boy had tested positive for H1N1 and both the mother and the son were being treated in separate wards.

?Swine Flu has become a seasonal flu and there is no need to panic,? the deputy director said. The relatives of the patient approached the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for tablets as a precautionary measure.

Middle-aged woman with swine flu dies in private hospital in TN

Coimbatore: A 40-year-old woman, undergoing treatment for swine flu at a private hospital here, died Friday, officials said.

The woman and her 10-year-old nephew were admitted to the hospital some 10 days ago following symptoms of swine flu, after their return from Kerala, hospital officials said.

Their swab had tested positive for H1N1 virus.

Her nephew was discharged a couple of days ago after he recovered but the woman died this morning.

The deceased M Mumtaj (40), wife of Mohammed Iqbal from Kottaimedu, who had recently visited Kerala, was admitted to the G Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital, with the symptoms of Swine Flu last Saturday. Testing of her blood samples revealed that she was infected with H1N1 virus.[/FONT]
