THENI: A two-year-old boy died of swine flu in Madurai on Saturday despite having been treated in different hospitals.

A source said the victim Jeeva Kishore, son of Saravanakumar, belonging to Bodi, fell ill on July 13 and was taken to a nearby private hospital where he underwent treatment for a few days. Then, he was shifted to a private hospital in Theni.

Following the death of the two-year-old, doctors sent his blood sample for a micro- analysis test conducted in a private lab in Coimbatore recently. The medical report confirmed the boy had swine flu.

More H1N1 cases reported from Tamil Nadu

COIMBATORE: The state government has confirmed that H1N1 cases are continuing to surface in many districts, albeit in small numbers. Officials have confirmed that Tamil Nadu has recorded at least 30 cases of H1N1 after the season for the virus ended in March.

According to data with the directorate of public health, Tamil Nadu has recorded 720 cases of H1N1 virus and 20 deaths due to the virus since January. Officials say more than 10% of this number, or 30 cases, were recorded after April, at which point health department officials declared that the H1N1 virus season was over.

[h=1]Tiruchy Woman Dies of Swine Flu[/h] TIRUCHY: A 43-year-old woman died of H1N1 early Tuesday morning at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH), and it is said to be the first swine flu death in the district.
MGMGH officials said the patient with severe complications was admitted in the last stage after undergoing treatment in a private hospital. Health official sources said the 43-year-old Nagakanni, wife of Chellasamy of Rettavaikkal in the city, had high temperature with respiratory problems for the past seven days. So, she was admitted to a private hospital. Sources said that since her condition started deteriorating, the doctors suspected she was infected with swine flu leading them to take a blood sample and the diagnosis revealed that she was tested H1N1 positive.
So, they referred her to MGMGH on Monday night, where she died.

[h=1]17-year-old girl in Tiruchi hospitalised with H1N1 symptoms[/h] A seventeen-year-old girl has been admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital here with symptoms of H1N1 influenza.
The girl, studying Plus Two in a private school at Crawford here, was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday night after being referred by a private medical practitioner, according to sources.
Hospital authorities said the swab sample of the girl has been sent for test and the result was awaited.
Since the girl had symptoms of swine flu, she has been put on Tamiflu and kept in the isolation ward of the hospital.
Meanwhile, corporation health officials visited the family and put them on prophylactic treatment with Tamiflu tablets.
?Her family members and contacts have been screened and asked to take the tablets for 10 days. We have mounted surveillance in the area,? said a health official.

Suspected case of death by H1N1 in Trichy

TRICHY: A 38-year-old woman, who undergoing treatment for fever, died on Sunday, suspected to be a case of H1N1. R Sellam from Agaram village, near Senthurai in Ariyalur district, breathed her last at the Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital around 4am on Sunday.

Health department officials are yet to reach a conclusion as the lab results on swab samples collected from her are pending.

"She died as soon as she was brought to Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital from KMC, a private hospital in Trichy, after her family members decided to shift her to the government hospital, which is well equipped," deputy director of health services (DDHS), Ariyalur, Dr S Porkodi told ToI.

Dr Porkodi did not confirm on the swine flu, but said it might be suspected case, as the lab results were awaited.

A 38-year-old woman from Ariyalur, who was treated at three hospitals in three districts, died of H1N1 on Saturday.

According to officials, R. Sellam of Agaram had developed severe respiratory problem, fever and sore throat a few days ago. She was initially admitted to a private hospital in Ariyalur. Since there was no improvement, she was admitted to a private hospital in Tiruchi on Saturday, where a swab test confirmed that she was infected with H1N1 virus.

Trichy: A 32-year-old man from a village in Ariyalur district was on Monday admitted to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Trichy with symptoms of H1N1. With this, the total number of H1N1 cases reported in the central region touched six in the last one month.

K Karthikeyan from Kallankurichi, who was suffering from severe respiratory problem, was shifted to MGMGH around 1am on Monday from a private hospital in Thanjavur. "My son's condition was deteriorating. He continued to have breathing difficulty despite undergoing treatment at a private hospital for the last four days. Further, they failed to communicate clearly about his ailment. So, I brought him to MGMGH," said his father Karunanidhi. Karthikeyan works as a clerk in a cement factory in Ariyalur district.

On the night of November 14, she was shifted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. She died there at 4.30 a.m. on November 15, her son G. Gopi said. ?While handing over the body fully covered with white cloth, the doctors asked us not to remove the cloth and cremate it in flames as my mother died due to suspected swine flu infection,? he added.

Swine Flu Claims Namakkal Farmer, 45-year-old Lorry Driver in Tiruchy

TIRUCHY: Saminathan (45), a lorry driver hailing from Sempattu in Tiruchy, who was diagnosed H1N1 influenza failed to respond to treatment and succumbed to death in a private hospital in the City on Wednesday.

According to health officials, Saminathan had travelled to Tiruppathi with his family and returned four days ago suffering from high fever, vomiting and respiratory problems. As he did not improve, he was taken to a private hospital in the city on Wednesday morning. He was confirmed with H1N1 after the blood test at a govt. authorised private lab. He did not respond to the treatment and died on Wednesday night

[h=1]H1N1 death toll goes up to 5 in 10 days[/h]
TRICHY: A 24-year old woman from Nagapattinam, who suffered a miscarriage due to swine flu a few days ago, died of H1N1 in the isolation ward of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) in Trichy around 10 pm on Friday. Earlier in the day, a 63-year-old woman from Karur died of H1N1 in the same ward. With this, five people have died of H1N1 in the Trichy region in the past 10 days.

K Deepa, 24 from Melavanchoor in Nagapattinam district was declared dead by the MGMGH doctors tonight after her health condition failed to respond to the treatment from Tuesday. A source at the hospital said she had severe respiratory problem caused by swine flu. She was nine months pregnant when she was shifted from a private hospital in Nagapattinam to the MGMGH on October 17. She is survived by her husband Karuppasamy and a son.

The foetus was found dead in the womb on October 16, said her sister Parameshwari. The foetus was removed by the MGMGH doctors, but her health condition deteriorated due to the gradual dysfunction of lungs.

Earlier in the day, P Chandra died following dysfunction of the respiratory system triggered by H1N1.

"Her health condition worsened despite treatment," Dr Anitha, nodal officer for the treatment of fever cases, told TOI on Friday evening.

Chandra developed fever on November 10 and underwent treatment at a private hospital in Karur. As the fever failed to subside, she was taken to a private hospital in Trichy, where she was diagnosed with H1N1.

The doctors announced the news of the death to her family members and relatives who were waiting outside the isolation ward in the hospital at around 4pm.

Her family members wanted to take the body to their home for conducting the final rites. However, health department officials remained undecided on whether to allow them to do so. "We have taken prophylactic measures among the family members and neighbours. Usually people take such bodies to the crematorium from the hospital. In this case, we are yet to decide," said deputy director of health services Dr Nalini.

C Nagakanni from Rettaivaikkal on Vayaloor Road in Trichy died on Diwali day at MGMGH followed by R Sellam, 38, from Ariyalur on November 1 at Thanjavur Government Medical College Hospital and Saminathan, 45, from Sembattu at a private hospital in Trichy on November 18.

Meanwhile, Friday's deaths triggered panic among the relatives of two other patients who are also undergoing treatment at MGMGH H1N1.

2 Swine Flu Cases Among 3 Fever Deaths in Tiruchy

TIRUCHY: In what has become a continuing saga, three fever-related deaths were reported at the MGMGH on Friday.

In the first case, 25-year-old Dheepa of Nagapattinam, who was brought to the hospital in a serious condition with H1N1 on November 18 passed away on Friday. The woman had lost her 9-month-old foetus because of H1N1related complications and was fighting for her life.

In the second case, a 63-year-old woman from Karur suffering from H1N1 died on Friday. Sources said the woman had been receiving treatment at a private hospital and was referred to MGMGH only on Wednesday night in a critical condition.

In the third incident, a 15-year-old boy from Perambalur died of mysterious fever. Sources said Satheeshkumar, son of Saravanan of Naranamangalam, was suffering from fever for over a week and admitted to MGMGH five days ago. However, his condition worsened and he was shifted to Intensive Care Unit a couple of days back.

While hospital officials claimed the boy was brought in with severe complications, his relatives alleged that he could have contracted dengue.

Meanwhile, K Deepa, 24 from Melavanchoor in Nagapattinam district and Chandra, 63 from Karur died in the hospital on Friday. A 19-year-old boy with H1N1 symptoms was in Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) on Saturday.

Trichy Corporation health officer M Geetha Rani said that H1N1 was a pandemic in 2009 but now its virulence has gone down, and the World Health Organization has declared it a seasonal influenza.

"We tend to get immune to such viral infections over time which is the reason behind the fewer number of deaths in the recent years," she said.

Pointing out that it is merely a seasonal flu, the health expert said that it mostly affects people with low immunity during winter. She emphasized on early diagnosis. "Most of the deaths could be averted if patients with H1N1 symptoms are taken to hospital on time," she said.

Meanwhile in Chennai, a 33-year-old man is suspected to have died of H1N1 (swine flu) at Government Royapettah Hospital on Saturday. The patient, Vinayaga Murthy, a resident of Royapettah, was admitted to the hospital around 8 a.m. -- unconscious and bleeding -- a hospital official said.

He is believed to have recently returned from a trip abroad and had fever for about two days. He died around 3 p.m. at the hospital. ?His X-Ray shows an infection in the lungs. The cause of death is septic shock and acute respiratory distress. However, we have sent a sample to test for H1N1,? the official said.

80-year-old woman dies of swine flu

An elderly woman, who was suffering from fever and throat pain, died today of swine flue in the government hospital here.

The deceased has been identified as Muthammal.

She was a resident of Sultanpet near Sulur on the outskirts was suffering from fever and throat pain and was under treatment in a private hospital since November 30.
