1,000 people afflicted by malaria, viral fever in Rameswaram

Rameswaram (TN), Dec 21 (PTI) More than 1,000 people, including some pilgrims, were afflicted by malaria and viral fever here, with several residential areas remaining water logged in the wake of north-east monsoon rains since last month, officials said today.
Health department officials said due to continuous stagnation of water, over 1,000 people had been affected by malaria and viral fever in the pilgrim island thronged by people from across the country.

Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu is on the SE coast of India, and one of the closest points to Sri Lanka. I did not suspect an influenza component until I saw this article about the rise of flu and ILI in Chennai the capital of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu has been a notorious undercounter of H1N1, refusing to report many confirmed cases and fatalities since 2009. It is possible that the H1N1 outbreak in Sri Lanka has transferred across to southern India.


Rise in illness with erratic weather

CHENNAI: With the sudden change in weather, intermittent rains and drop in temperature, doctors in the city are seeing more cases of common flu, viral fever and influenza like illness in the city.

"Last month we saw many dengue cases where the symptoms would be like influenza but this month the number has come down. We are also seeing non specific viral fevers in a number of patients," said Dr V Ramasubrahmanian, senior consultant of infectious disease at Apollo hospital.

Doctors also mentioned that apart from normal fever caused by virus, they are also seeing fever of unknown origin in patients where the cause for the fever remains unidentified. "Sometimes these fevers last from seven to ten days and do not respond to any medicine. I see almost three to four such cases of unexplained illness every week," said Dr D Balasubramanian, an ENT specialist in the city.

Most of these infections he said have similar symptoms of cold, upper respiratory infection, fever, nasal block sometimes accompanied by wheezing. "This fever is also very infectious. Usually after treating a person for flu, someone else from the family falls sick and comes to me for treatment," he said.

Two suspected cases of dengue deaths in Ramnad

RAMANATHAPURAM: Two persons had reportedly died of dengue fever and more than 200 others are said to be suffering from it in Uchipuli and more than ten other villagers in its periphery here.


According to reports, Shobika (3), daughter of Thillainatarajan, of Mandapam panchayat and Govindammal (35), of Pudumadam, near Uchipuli, had died last week, suffering from dengue.

Ramasamy, of Uchipuli, said that more than 200 persons from more than 15 villages, were down with dengue fever.
