When I first read this thread, I commented that this story needed wider attention. Apparently, Fox News had found a political reason to give this story exactly the attention that it needs. I suspect a better outcome may be coming shortly.

I am not a lawyer, but it seems there could be some very interesting civil and criminal cases to follow against several of both the doctors and the state officials involves in this mess.

That sounds like very good news! Still shocking that she was held back from her life for 16 months, though. And the pattern of hospitals lashing out at families who desire second opinions via state custodial power is nationwide. The mother of a man in his 20's was arrested for kidnapping in Seattle when she took her son from a hospital in Alaska to get treatment there. The charges were dropped but the nightmare was long for them, too:

Court imposed protective state care order and limited visits from parents

Dissatisfied with her 16-year-old son's medical care, Michelle Rider was preparing to transfer him from Lurie Children's Hospital when a doctor delivered staggering news: The teen had been placed in temporary protective custody.

"They accused me of medical (child) abuse," Rider said of that morning last month. "I said, 'What is that?' They told me to Google it. I was not allowed to have contact with my son and was told they would be making medical decisions for now on.".

No one disputes that the teen has serious health problems. Diagnosed with a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis in which tumors develop on nerves throughout the body, he began having painful convulsions in his left thigh and leg after a partial amputation in 2012, records show...

The mother and son are from Kansas City, Mo., so now since she can't stay in Ronald McDonald house since her son was released from the hospital into foster care - she has to pay for lodging to be near her son.
