Officials caution Cameron County amid cases of dengue fever

BROWNSVILLE ? Cameron County health officials are urging residents to be extra cautious when going outdoors during the dawn and dusk hours because of at least 14 cases of dengue fever reported in the county...

...Hidalgo County has had three probable cases but no confirmed ones.

Although Cameron County health officials cannot say when the first case was reported, they did report they have been closely monitoring the situation during the past two weeks.

County Health Administrator Yvette Salinas said that the cases reported were ?travel-related? cases and cases that developed within the county.

?That is what really caught our attention so we have been watching it more closely the last couple of weeks because some of the cases are not travel-related,? Salinas said...

Dengue fever outbreak reported in the Valley

The peak season for Dengue Fever in Mexico was last month but it appears the virus has found its way to the Rio Grande Valley.

Some 14 cases have been reported in Cameron County and three in Hidalgo.

Four of those who have contracted the virus in Cameron County have no history of travel meaning they were in contact with an infected mosquito right here in the Valley.

Dengue Fever Reemerges in Texas

...Texas public health officials announced that the same area that saw an outbreak almost a decade ago now has 18 confirmed cases of the disease. Seven are believed to have been locally acquired (rather than contracted when traveling to a dengue-endemic region), according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Texas dengue fever update: 25 cases in Cameron County

...In an interview with Dr. Brian Smith with the Texas Department of State Health Services earlier today (Listen below), Dr. Smith said the case count in Cameron County is now up to 25 cases, with six people requiring hospitalization. The cases were confirmed positive either for the IgM antibody or by polyermase chain reaction (PCR).

In addition, Smith said that at least six of the cases were considered locally-acquired...

Dengue fever on the rise across the Valley

There are now 32 cases of Dengue that are being treated in the Rio Grande Valley.

According to health experts, the number of Dengue cases have doubled and even tripled.

There are currently 25 cases of this disease in Cameron County, and six cases in Hidalgo County.

Willacy County has its first case with Dengue...
