Ninth death in Yala measles outbreak

A child succumbed to measles in Yala province on Monday morning, bringing the number of deaths from an outbreak of the disease in the country?s southernmost province to nine.

Yala Provincial Public Health Office continued to dispatch officials to vaccinate young children against measles on Monday, aiming to complete the vaccination of all those at risk in the province by November 4.

The acting director of Tambon Yala Health Promotion Hospital, registered professional nurse Thelma Doyor, led a team to provide vaccine to 15 children in Ban Pajo (Moo 3) in Mueang district.

Aiming to cover the area?s 108 toddlers, the hospital had previously vaccinated 35 kids and would ask for additional dosage so as to cover the rest by November 4, she said...

The measles outbreak in Yala has worsened with 859 children now having been infected and the death toll standing at 10 cases, Betong district health official Wongwit Akarawarothai said on Tuesday.

Wongwit joined other health officials in knocking on doors to have people in Ban Na Kor (Moo 9) in Tambon Ai Yer Weng vaccinated, resulting in 75 children under the age of five receiving vaccinations...

Narathiwat reports more measles cases

Narathiwat ? Narathiwat Provincial Public Health Official Wiset Sirinthornsophon said the southern province has had an increase in measles cases, with the number of patients between 1 January 2018 and 25 October 2018 recorded at 71 without any fatality.

The epidemic goes in keeping with the situation in Pattani (200 cases) and in Yala where about 500 cases have been reported.

The epidemic in Narathiwat is mainly affecting infants up to 12 years old...

Girl dies of measles as outbreak spreads in deep South

PATTANI: A nine-month-old girl has died of measles, raising the death toll from the disease in the southern border provinces to more than a dozen.

Pattani Hospital reported the baby girl died of measles and pneumonia on Saturday. She had been admitted to Yarang Hospital in Yarang district on Saturday and was later sent to the main provincial hospital because of her serious condition.

The girl was not given measles vaccine because she was already ill with the disease when she met doctors for the vaccination, the hospital said.

A baby needs two shots of measles vaccine, one at nine months old and another at two years and six months old.

The latest case raised the total number of measles victims to at least 13 in the region, 10 of them in Yala and three in Pattani provinces.

Yala has 890 measles patients, followed by 445 in Pattani and 79 in Narathiwat...

BANGKOK, 8 November 2018 (NNT)-Thailand's Department of Health Service Support (DHSS) has instructed relevant agencies to contain a measles outbreak in the Deep South and Songkhla province after 1,515 cases and 12 deaths have been reported.

The DHSS has instructed the Primary Health Care Division, the Institute for Health Service System Innovation Development of Yala and the Office of Health Service Support Region 12 to implement measures to prevent the spread of measles in Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat and Songkhla provinces.

At least 2,280 people were infected and 18 killed by Measles in the mainly Muslim border provinces in the south of Thailand this year.

The largest group affected were young children up to the age of four.

?Measles vaccination is free and is in line with Islamic principles,? Songkhla?s public-health chief Utissak Harirattanakul said yesterday, as he tried to encourage Muslim parents to get their children vaccinated against the highly communicable disease.

In a move to downplay locals? concerns the vaccine may be haram (forbidden in Islam), Utissak said both the Sheikhul Islam Office and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation?s legal team had approved the measles vaccine...
