Dengue fever, the painful, sometimes fatal mosquito borne illness also known as “bone break fever,” is making its annual resurgence as heavy rains in many regions of Thailand return with a resultant explosion in the mosquito population.

The deputy director of the Department of Disease Control is warning people to beware, as over the past 3 months, 8,147 people in the central and northern provinces of Ang Thong, Rayong and Phichit, have contracted the disease, and 4 have died...

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has put in place preventive measures against dengue fever in the rainy season as dengue fever shares similar symptoms to COVID-19.

Permanent Secretary for BMA, Silapasuai Rawisaengsun said Thailand is entering the rainy season.

She warned people to eradicate stagnant water, an ideal mosquito breeding ground. According to the statistics of the BMA-run hospitals, 1,295 dengue patients were recorded from Jan 1- April 20...

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: A campaign is being launched in Muang district to prevent the spread of dengue fever after 737 cases of the mosquito-borne tropical disease were found in this northeastern province.

The campaign involves village health volunteers going out to villages to distribute abate sand granules to kill mosquito larvae.

Dr Kittipong Sanchartwiroon, director of the 9th Disease Control Office, said the numbers of people who contracted dengue fever in four lower northeastern provinces under the jurisdiction of his office have increased rapidly...

Dengue fever in Thailand: increased cases during the rainy season

The rainy season in Thailand is invariably accompanied by hordes of mosquitoes, and therefore the diseases they transmit, especially in areas near water points. Thus, since the beginning of the year, 25,708 cases of dengue have been recorded in the country, causing the death of 15 people.

Most infections are reported in Isan, the northeastern region of Thailand, says Dr Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoen, director of the Department of Disease Control.

Even though dengue fever is seen more in Isan, cases are currently being reported across Thailand.

Thus, the province of Chaiyaphum is the most concerned, ahead of Rayong, Khon Kaen, Mae Hong Son and Nakhon Ratchasima.

The age group most affected by dengue fever is 15-24 year olds, followed by 10-14 year olds and 25-34 year olds.

While Thailand's Meteorological Department predicts that most of the country's provinces will experience heavy and continuous rains over the coming weeks, leading to an increase in mosquito numbers, dengue cases are expected to be on the rise, especially in areas near water points.

The authorities call on the population to be cautious about these insects and to take the necessary safety measures. Three essential means of protection were put forward: cleaning homes to avoid stagnant water where mosquitoes can lay eggs, cleaning the exterior spaces of the house, in particular plastics where water can be retained, and the storage of water only in closed containers....

Thailand is fighting its worst outbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever in 20 years, with the tropical disease taking a far heavier toll on the population than the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Southeast Asian nation has seen a record number of more than 136,000 cases and 126 fatalities from the disease which causes flu-like symptoms, including a fever, piercing headaches, muscle and joint pains and body rashes.

The surge in cases has eclipsed Thailand's coronavirus outbreak. The country has been a rare success story and so far has reported just 3,480 infections and 58 deaths...
