Dengue fever likely strengthens in rainy season

Bangkok, 19 May 2012? The Disease Control Department has cautioned people to protect themselves against dengue fever which is likely to strengthen during the rainy season.

Since the beginning of this year, dengue fever is reported to have killed nine people and sickened 7,000 people. The Disease Control Department said the rainy season which exists between May and June each year is usually a breading period of dengue fever

Phuket Dengue Fever Outbreak Kills Phuket Expat

PHUKET: An expat resident of Phuket has become the first victim of mosquito-borne dengue fever so far this year, Phuket Public Health officials report.

The man, a Norwegian who spent half his time there and half on Phuket with his Thai family, died in April.

Deaths on Phuket from dengue are rare but the Director of the Phuket Provincial Health Office, Dr Sak Tenchaikul, is warning of an increasing number of cases so far this year.

The total number of dengue cases on Phuket already tallies 153, well up on 2011. Cases usually peak on Phuket around June each year...

Phuket dengue fever cases on the rise
Chief of The Phuket Provincial Public Health Office (PHO), Doctor Sak Tengchaikul, announced today (June 1) that the extreme conditions of the rainy season and climate change has led to a rise in the number of dengue cases.

Speaking at a press conference at the Phuket Provincial Hall, Dr Sak said, ?The dengue fever situation has increased since the beginning of the year. The number of recorded cases from January 1 to May 29 is 11,202 patients.?

He added, ?The illness affects less than 0.05 per centof the population ? eight patients have died this year. The percentage of people who die without knowing they have contracted dengue fever is 0.01 per cent, while the fatality rate for those diagnosed and who have received treatment but go on to die is 0.07 per cent for Phuket province.?

Over 100 Satun students with dengue fever

SATUN, 17 June 2012 (NNT) - Dr Somkiat Khumnurak of the Satun Provincial Health Office made public that numerous measures are in place to prevent dengue fever in Satun province, following an outbreak in April and May.

There are currently 119 students afflicted with dengue fever, spread throughout the province. Public campaigns have been initiated and the aid of educational institutions has been sought to help prevent the spread of the disease. Preventive measures include making certain that water containers are tightly closed and that residential areas are clean, so as to curb the breeding of infectious mosquitoes.

Measures are, however, in place if there are suspected dengue fever patients. If anyone believes themselves to be suffering from dengue fever, they should seek immediate medical attention.

TRAT, 25 June 2012 - According to Trat?s provincial public health office, over 140 confirmed cases of the potentially deadly dengue fever virus have so far been reported in the eastern province.

Since the beginning of this year, 146 cases of dengue fever have been recorded in Trat province, with the toll ranked as second highest in the eastern region and seventh highest in Thailand. A record number of 6 patients have been found in Koh Kood, the farthest island in the Trat Sea...

Dengue fever outbreak expected

Dengue fever has claimed 18 of the 17,086 patients this year, which is considerably more than the number affected in the same period last year, Bureau of Vector Borne Diseases Director Dr Wichai Satimai said.

He said the number of people who have died from dengue fever Type III, which is a more severe infection, mostly took place in the South. The Type III virus seems to be on the rise and the authorities will be handing out a handbook to help diagnose the disease. He has also urged communities to destroy mosquito larvae.
