BANGKOK, July 5 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's Public Health Ministry on Sunday announced 231 more patients, who are confirmed to have infected with the A/H1N1 flu virus, bringing the country's total number to 2,076.

Of the total new confirmed cases, 26 are domestically infected, said Deputy Minister Manit Nopamornbodi, the Thai News Agency reported.

The deputy minister said 205 of the total new cases are students.

As 2,036 patients have already recovered, 33 others are still treated in hospitals, and seven people died of the A/H1N1 flu virus infection, he said.

Meanwhile, among those who have remained in the hospitals, three are in critical condition, he aid.

The three patients are an 81-year-old woman in the northern province of Pijit, the second is a 24-year-old woman of the central province of Ratchaburi, and the third is a 21-year-old woman in the central province of Chonburi.

The second case, with a heavy weight at 100 kilograms, has been moved to a Bangkok hospital for further treatment, he said.

The country had its first two confirmed patients on May 12, and according to the World Health Organization, Thailand ranked 33rd among the countries which have been hit by the deadly new virus.

It is amazing that Thailand is able to confirm this many cases in so short a time while the US was not nearly so capable considering the two countries population size and public health infrastructure. Interesting.

The Public Health Ministry Tuesday reported two more deaths caused by the A (H1N1) influenza, raising the flu fatalities to nine.

Deputy Public Health Minister Manit Nopamornbodi said an eight-year-old girl died on July 2 and the result of lab test just came out that she got A (H1N1) flu.

Manit said an 58-year-old man died of the flu Tuesday morning. He tested positive to A (H1N1) influenza on Monday.

BANGKOK, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Thai Public Heath Ministry on Wednesday morning announced one additional death case from A/H1N1 flu, the 11th flu fatality in the country, soon after the tenth death was confirmed earlier the day, Thai media reported.

According to Bangkok Post online, the ministry said the latest victim was a 21-year-old woman from Bangkok. And just moments before that, Public Heath Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai confirmed a university student in Phuket had died of the new flu strain, without giving more details.

The two death cases reported Wednesday brought the total fatalities from A/H1N1 flu in Thailand to 11, and the ministry also confirmed 290 new infection cases, raising the total cases to 2,718.

Among the patients still in hospital, eight are in critical condition, the ministry said.

63-year-old woman in coma in Samut Prakan

Thailand's type-A (H1N1) influenza death toll has risen to 11, with 2,714 other cases certified - among them a 63-year-old female patient admitted to Samut Prakan Hospital yesterday with high fever, who went into shock and is now in a coma.

The Bang Sao Thong resident's condition is critical, because she has a history of chronic illness, including heart disease, said hospital director Chalit Thongprayoon.

The province's most severe case, she is hooked up to a respirator while staff await samples sent to the Medical Science Department's lab.

Many private hospitals in Samut Prakan have had flu patients seeking treatment, but determining whether they have the new flu depends on lab confirmation costing from Bt4,000 to Bt5,000 a case, a source reported yesterday.

Many schools have been closed for cleaning after students came down with conventional flu. The Bang Pu Industrial Estate has reported workers with flu and some factories have installed thermal scanners to prevent workers or visitors with high body temperatures from entering workplaces, the source reported.

In Chiang Mai, where 50 type-A (H1N1) flu patients have been reported, a 26-year-old man died of acute pneumonia, and doctors believe he was infected with the virus, said Chiang Mai's chief public-health officer.

Dr Wattana Kanchanakamol said the man died only two hours after being admitted to a private hospital, and tests to confirm the virus are under way.

In Phuket, 37 new flu patients have been reported. Provincial public-health chief Dr Pongsawat Rattanasaeng said three had been in direct contact with freshmen from Prince of Songkhla University who were infected with the new virus last week and were under surveillance.

Deputy university rector Methee Sanpanich announced a two-day closure for the institute from yesterday, to clean the 1,500 student-dormitory rooms.

Department of Medical Services chief Rewat Wisarutvej yesterday visited a male patient, 45, unconscious at Ayutthaya's Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Hospital.

He said the Bangkok man, who weighed 103 kilograms and suffered chronic illness, including heart disease and a deteriorated kidney, had been visiting relatives in the province. He developed a high fever and was unable to breathe on his own. The hospital suspects he may have type-A (H1N1) flu and has submitted his samples for testing.

Thailand confirmed two more deaths from A(H1N1) influenza on Thursday, as the Public Health Ministry reported 211 new infections, and the cabinet met to consider new measures to contan the spread of the virus.

The 12th victim was a 52-year-old traffic policeman in Bang Na, Bangkok, who suffered from kidney failure. The 13th victim was a student in the 11th grade at Maha Sarakham University demonstration school in the northeastern province of Maha Sarakham.

The young student was believed to have caught the disease when he went to take an assessment examination for Chulalongkorn University's faculty of medicine. At least 10 of his friends have been admitted to hospitals for tests.

After his death, the school announced that it would close on Thursday and Friday.

Total influenza A infections had risen to 2,925, the health ministry announced.

The cabinet was expected to decide on Thursday whether to close tutorial schools and online games shops for two weeks to limit the outbreak, as proposed by the Public Health Ministry.

If the move is approved, they are likely to close from Monday.

The plan was backed by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Of the cumulative total cases, 2,735 patients have recovered, 14 people died and about eight others are in serious condition, the Channel 7 quoted ministry sources as saying.

Thailand's Public Health Ministry has assigned permanent secretary and senior officials to inspect preventive and control measures throughout the country.

The country confirmed its first two infection cases on May 12.

The Public Health Ministry has confirmed the fifteenth swine flu-related fatality on Friday.

The ministry's Bureau of Epidemiology said the latest fatality was a 63-year-old woman from Samut Prakan province. She suffered from valvular heart disease, high blood pressure and lung infection.

She died on Thursday night and the ministry was notified on Friday afternoon.

More than half of the flu-infected patients were between 11 and 20 years old.

The patient was admitted to Ayutthaya hospital last Wednesday. He, already in critical condition, suffered from a complication of pneumonia and kidney failure.

A team of doctors tried to save his life by giving him the antiviral drug oseltamivir and washing his kidney, but they had failed, he said.

As of Saturday morning, Thailand had confirmed 157 new infection cases, bringing the country's cumulative total to 3,228.

Ayutthaya man succumbs





A 45-year-old male resident of Ayutthaya province succumbed to complications from several diseases Saturday and was suspected to have become the latest victim of the type-A (H1N1) influenza. Health authorities, however, kept the number of fatalities unchanged at 15.

The Ayutthaya resident was admitted to hospital last Monday after four days of high fever, with multiple symptoms, including high fever, pneumonia, high blood pressure, malfunctioning kidney and heart, and leptospirosis,:surrender: said Dr Paichit Varachit, deputy permanent secretary for public health.

TWO MORE PEOPLE DIE OF INFLUENZA A (H1N1) IN THAILAND

BANGKOK, July 12 (Bernama) -- Two more people died due to Influenza A (H1N1) in Thailand Sunday, raising the number of casualities to 18.


The Public Health Ministry said the latest casualties involves a rubber tapper in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat and a woman from Ratchaburi province who worked in an online games cafe.

It said that almost 300 new cases were detected today, bringing the total number of cases to over 3,550.

The Thai Government has ordered more than 2,200 tuition centres nationwide to be closed for two weeks in a move to contain the virus, while Internet and games cafes have been asked to take similar measures.

Although more than 420 deaths were reported worldwide, only Thailand and the Philippines (one) have confirmed fatalities in the region from the virus outbreak that started in Mexico few months ago.

The Public Health Ministry reported three more deaths related to the influenza A(H1N1) virus on Monday, bringing the toll to 21.

It also reported 329 new infections, nine of them in critical condition.

Thailand has reported a total of 3,883 swine flu infections so far.

The 19th victim was a 13-year-old boy, the 20th a 46-year-old woman from Sakhon Nakhon and the latest a 53-year-old woman living in Bangkok.

The Public Health Ministry reported on Tuesday that three more people had died from the influenza A (H1N1) virus, bringing the total number of deaths in Thailand to 24.

It also confirmed 176 new infections, bringing the total number of infections to 4,057.

The 22nd victim was a 67-year-old woman living in Bangkok. She was min the last stage of lung cancer.

The 23rd victim was a 57-year-old woman, also living in the capital.

The latest victim was a 32-year-old woman from Samut Sakhon. She had asthma and was overweight.

Of all, 4,021 have already recovered.

Deaths from the A flu remained unchanged at 24.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration have begun cleaning some schools after it announced the temporary closure of its schools to curb the spread of A flu.

The schools will reopen on Monday.

The Public Health Ministry reported the 25th death from H1N1 influenza and confirmed 412 new infections on Friday.

The total infections in Thailand have risen to 4,469, the ministry announced.

The latest victim was a 62-year-old woman living in Chumphon who weighed 125 kilogrammes. She had caught the virus from her relatives.

Dr Anu Thongdaeng of Paknam Chumphon Hospital said the woman had high blood pressure and was too fat. She died on Tuesday morning.

THAI executive board chairman Wallop Bhukkanasut said the flu scare had directly affected the airline industry.

The number of passengers from eastern Asian countries like China, Japan and Korea had plummeted by 15 to 20 per cent, forcing the airline to turn more to the European market, he said.

But deputy government spokesman Puttipong Punnakan said tourism increased during the five-day holiday last week, judging by the hotel occupancy rate.

He said the hotels reported occupancy rates had increased from 20 per cent to 40 per cent.

The swine flu death toll has more than doubled from 20 last week to 44, while the total number of confirmed A(H1N1) flu cases has rocketed to 6,776, the Public Health Ministry reported on Wednesday.

Health deputy permanent secretary Paichit Varachit said 6,697 patients had recovered. Thirty-five others remained in hospitals and seven of them were in critical condition.

Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said he had instructed provincial governors, doctors and nurses nationwide to implement more stringent measures to curb the A(H1N1) flu outbreak.

"Provincial authorities need to educate people about the disease and ways to protect themselves from being infected so they do not panic," Dr Witthaya said.

Government officials and employees of state enterprises with flu-like symptoms can rest at home without having to get medical certificates, and they would not lose their holidays and other benefits, he said.

"Thailand's ranking in the number of swine flu cases and fatalities has not really risen to fourth place, as other countries have stopped reporting on the flu situation," the minister said.

He also expressed his concern for people who go to watch the friendly soccer match between Thailand and Liverpool on Wednesday evening. People with flu symptoms should definitely not go to the game, he said.

Interior Minister Chavarat Charnveerakul said he had ordered provincial governors to coordinate with health and other agencies in setting up swine flu prevention centres in their provinces.

He believed the swine flu outbreak would start to ease next month.
