Thailand: Investigating Thousands Of Dead Storks - H5N1?

Thailand: Investigating Thousands Of Dead Storks

# 4540

Whenever we hear of large die-offs of birds, particularly in Asia, we immediately think of H5N1.

But we?ve seen bird die-offs in various parts of the world that turned out to be due to something other than bird flu. While suspicious, this incident may have been caused by environmental toxins or even deliberate poisoning.

Since bird flu is a possibility, we?ll obviously watch with interest for any laboratory test results that come out of this.

This report from the Bangkok Post.

Thousands of storks die, bird flu cause debated

Thousands of openbill storks in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya's Phak Hai district have died, with avian influenza thought to be a possible cause.

A vast wasteland in tambon Khok Chang of Ayutthaya is home to tens of thousands of Asian openbill storks (nok pakhang). It is one of the largest flocks of birds in Ayutthaya.

A few days ago thousands of Asian openbill storks died without apparent cause.

Residents are worried the flock might have been infected with the bird flu virus as Phak Hai district was one of many areas nationwide reported with the virus outbreak last year.

They want authorities to investigate why the birds have died.

``Bird carcasses lie scattered over the wasteland and the canal bank nearby, sending out a bad smell all over the place,'' Vichien Puanglamjiak, a local farmer said.

Phak Hai district chief Rewat Prasong has warned residents to stay away from the area.

Health experts and veterinarians will collect samples from the carcasses to determine the cause of the birds' death, he said.

Rewat said the birds might have eaten some kind of toxic aquatic animal or they might have been poisoned by farmers who raised fish which were eaten by the birds.

In his view, the bird flu virus was unlikely to be the cause of the deaths, as it usually spreads in the early winter season, not in the summer.

However, it was not being ruled out in the investigation, said the district chief.

Many open bill ibis birds living in the middle of the field Khok Chang, A. Hai, Ayutthaya. Death by unknown causes. We suspect that the villagers were poisoned bored Or avian flu.

Villagers of Khok Chang, A. Hai, Ayutthaya. Open bill ibis birds take to verify many Killed by the unknown Khok Klang Thung Chang. Abandoned on the wild fish, pork canal track and field m 3 Moo 4, Chang, A. Kok Hai, which points to the usual residence and the expanded Union. The thousands of open bill ibis bird. Ayutthaya - store remains open bill ibis bird identification.

05/02/2553.

National Park officers. And the Department of Livestock to keep open bill ibis bird carcasses destroyed by unknown causes of death in many areas the infection with A. Hai to verify that the bird flu or not.

National Parks and Wildlife officers plants and more than 60 officials from the Department of Livestock said travel by car into the median area of water, fish, pork Lam Rang Area 3 and 4, M. A. Kok Chang Hai, Ayutthaya. To examine and collect samples at open bill ibis birds die without knowing why. Found throughout the length of the staff to review open bill ibis bird carcasses found dead Fully all the way The staff has kept black bag open bill ibis bird carcasses to be burnt and buried included. By the authorities to check this disease can wear protective clothing. With the disinfectant spray equipment. And bag carrion Duty to keep open bill ibis bird carcasses. And care must be taken. Because the area is an area that had outbreaks of bird flu previously.

The staff is divided into three sets spread open bill ibis bird carcasses collected many of the dead under the tree center field that can store nearly 1,000 bird carcasses and certain death for about 2-3 days just to die of some new other officers collected information is open bill ibis bird that died in the laboratory examination. To determine the cause of death real. The expected time for at least a week to be the result.

Mr. Rewat wish sheriff Hai said that the samples both birds and bird mortality and sent to operations test the second part is the Department of Livestock first set and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Flora a set for examination for the cause of death true that from animal watering with chemicals or pesticides residues. Or caused by avian influenza. But the area was down. Cause of death probably comes from eating fish containing chemical or pesticide residues by A. Hai area of each lot of rice. And earlier shells rampant problem. And brown planthopper problem rampant. Farmers and increase the dose of chemicals to eliminate pests from rice And chemical and pesticide residues into the aquatic animals When birds eat it die. But issues that people fear the bird flu is not censoring. And the proof would have to wait for next

That Wong has the SubLt Weerasak. Area Hunting Wat Pai Lom's. Believe that death can come from toxic residues in Aquatic birds to eat. Not likely to be influenza. Because the bird flu epidemic disease on temperature is not high. Or in the winter in Thailand. And never appear to be avian influenza outbreak in the summer. This temperature range even up to 40 degrees in the heat this size. Disease outbreaks can not be. Because eggs covered disease due to thermal decomposition. And heat will kill bacteria. But if the winter coat fever disease germs to protect it. During the past winter, officials came open bill ibis bird survey samples in A. Hai gone. The audit did not find the spread of avian influenza infection as well.

However the death of many birds of this open bill ibis. Staff agencies are concerned that If it were true influenza strains of bacteria developed resistance to conditions. Thailand's climate is difficult to sterilize But the past officials have not thought that far reached.

[Information on the results of field and laboratory investigations of the described event will be appreciated. In 2004, HPAI H5N1 virus was reportedly found in 2 out of 15 sampled Asian open-bill storks in Thailand (see 20041214.3303). - Mod.AS]

[The tone of this report is of "thousands" dying in a short period of time, which is odd. We have had HPAI long enough in this region to expect a measure of background immunity and to ask: "Why now?" My first take on this, even if the numbers are more in the range of hundreds, is that I would first suspect an intoxication or poisoning. - Mod.MHJ]

[The weather should be investigated. Birds are very sensitive to temperature and weather changes. It can cause disorientation and for some birds who are migrating birds, when fat stores are lost, they can easily deplete their energy stores in a storm and die from exhaustion.

A thorough necropsy will tell us more about the condition of the birds and the possible cause of death. It would be unlikely for this many birds to be affected by avian influenza all at once.

However, if the carcasses are not picked up quickly, then botulism can form in the carcasses. As the maggots move in they consume the carcasses and other birds may eat the maggots, and thus become poisoned by botulism. - Mod.TG]

Thailand: storks, leopard reportedly had avian virus in Thai zoo
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
Test results showed 3 migratory Asian openbill storks that died in
Nakhon Sawan had the H5N1 sub-type of avian flu,
but authorities said
it was unlikely they had carried this virulent strain from abroad.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Praphat Panyachartrak also
said a clouded leopard at Khao Khiew Zoo in Chon Buri was confirmed
to have died of bird flu, while a white tiger also caught the disease
but is recovering and now under close surveillance.

"A study is needed to find if the storks caught the disease from
chickens," Mr Praphat said on Thursday [12 Feb 2004], insisting his
ministry would not order mass culling of this bird species without
sound scientific proof that the storks were carriers of the disease.

Hundreds of openbill storks have died at Bung Boraphet swamp in
Nakhon Sawan and Bangkok's Lat Krabang district, where poultry
infected with bird flu were found.
An official said the mass death of
storks in Lat Krabang had prompted the Agriculture Ministry to demand
that up to 20 000 migratory openbill storks be killed.

Samples of the storks living at Phut Khao bird park in Lat Krabang
and at Wang Nam Priew in Chachoengsao province were collected by
environment officials on Wednesday [11 Feb 2004] for testing.

Mr Praphat suspected some of the storks could have been exposed to
avian flu in Thailand after their arrival late last year [2003]. He
said it was unlikely the storks were carriers of the H5N1 variant
because they all came from Bangladesh, where there have been no
reports about the H5N1 strain so far. "We'd better tell Bangladesh to
keep a close watch on the birds on their return," he said. The storks
are expected to start their journey again in May [2004].

Hundreds of storks at 2 bird sanctuaries outside Bangkok have died of
the bird flu that has struck Asia's poultry farms, but there are no
plans to destroy the wildlife in the area, officials said Tuesday [10
Feb 2004].

Some 500 openbill storks were found dead in Lat Krabang district and
300 birds had died at the Bueng Boraphet wetland in Nakhon Sawan
province since 27 Jan 2004, said Minister of Natural Resources and
Environment Prapat Panyachatraksa on Tuesday [10 Feb 2004].

Laboratory tests found 30 percent to 40 percent of the dead storks,
which are migratory birds, were infected with bird flu virus, he said.

Dusit Zoo might be reopened this week [week of 18 Feb 2004] if lab
checks find no fresh outbreak of bird flu among the crows that use
the zoo for nesting, Natural Resources and Environment Minister
Prapat Panyachatraksa said yesterday [17 Feb 2004]. "The zoo has been
shut down for over 20 days, causing hardship for animals and humans
alike," he said.

Prapat warned against hasty reaction to the spread of bird flu among
wild and migrating birds, saying the situation had not spiralled out
of control as feared. "None of the pigeons that fly over Bangkok's
skies have been found to be infected with bird flu," he said.

The country's largest lake, Bung Boraphet in Nakhon Sawan, was
declared under quarantine on Monday [16 Feb 2004] after 17 out of
more than 10 000 migrating openbill storks died from the virus, he
said. Migrating storks in the Wat Pailom sanctuary in Pathum Thani
have not been infected with the deadly virus, although a few in a
separate flock at Bangkok's Lat Krabang district have been. Livestock
officials have been conducting daily checks on bird sanctuaries and
have found about 30 percent of dead bird carcasses could be
attributed to bird flu.

Hundreds of wild birds have died of avian influenza in the central
province of Nakhon Sawan of Thailand in a little over 2 weeks, the
Wildlife Conservation Division disclosed.

Director Chawal Thalhikorn was quoted by the Thai News Agency as
saying Saturday [5 Feb 2005] that his organization had been
monitoring the bird flu situation among wild birds closely. He said
between 18 Jan and 3 Feb [2005], almost 500 openbill storks had been
found dead at the Boraphet reservoir, Thailand's largest freshwater
swamp. Officials had burned the carcasses and sprayed disinfectant to
prevent the spread of disease.

In other control efforts, the director said more than 6800 birds from
80 species in 7 provinces had been tested for the deadly H5N1 strain
of the virus. The result of the tests will be disclosed soon.

However, he said testing by other agencies had found the bird flu
virus in 11 samples collected from 4 central provinces, including
Sukhothai, Uthai Thani, Lopburi, and Chachoengsao.

Re: Thailand: Investigating Thousands Of Dead Storks - H5N1?

Although the epidemic situation of avian influenza in poultry. Virus strain H5N1. The situation is still untrustworthy. During this outbreak is not found. And no reports of disease in 2-3 years, but Thailand must clearly be worried about the situation, the spread of avian flu again.

Once the report was "open bill ibis birds, the island living in the trees, fall, thousands of the dead" without knowing the cause of Khok Chang, A. Hai, Ayutthaya. Resulted in local people "uneasy fear" crisis of "bird flu" return "Resurrection" in Thailand again It seems to be an important indicator of bird flu. The epidemic may come back again.

But the death of open bill ibis birds in Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. It seems not the first open bill ibis birds have gathered in the area killed. Because the area is open bill ibis habitat of many birds. Prior to this open bill ibis birds have died as many Categories 7 and 8, A. Yai Hai, Ayutthaya. But once the results of pathological diagnosis of bird carcass dissection. The identification of bacteria Wittaya. "No bacterial pathogens, the identification of toxicology and biochemistry. "Not toxic, but it leaves a small parasite found in the intestinal wall and tablet blister on the kidney.

Prasert said Preecha complete. Director General of Livestock, said after the report sent officials of the Animal Quarantine Department of Livestock Development Ayutthaya. And Mon. Suphan Buri And related agencies said more than 60 pathogen protective clothing with disinfectant spray equipment. Carcasses and bag to perform open bill ibis bird carcasses collected more than 1,000 who died immediately from these data that the area is a habitat of more than 10,000 open bill ibis birds also served as a major source of the outbreak of bird flu and another with

The data showed that in those areas are death of many birds on a regular basis. Especially during the dry season, the food shortage that affects the body weakness of birds. Because the parasite exists. So the death might be attributed to the parasitic infection is most In the case of laboratories have examined disease And not the cause of avian influenza. Does not affect the community in terms of disease outbreaks. But the environment may affect their living birds. Parasite species are specific to only certain types of poultry.

However, the proof would have to wait again. To determine the cause of death real. It is expected that the use of at least a week to take note of analyzing the true cause of death from eating fish containing chemical Or pesticide residues. Or caused by avian influenza. But to many areas of the department has analyzed the cause of death probably comes from eating fish containing chemical or pesticide residue. A. Hai area, especially the rice. The planthopper problem of rampant tears. And shells rampant problem. Enable farmers increase dosage of chemical pesticides and chemicals from rice pesticide residues in these fish may be.
