Kamphaengphet has strictly monitored the bird flu situation in the province during January 3 to February 3, while prohibiting transport of all kinds of poultry after bird flu virus was found in free-range ducks in Phitsanulok Province.

Kamphaengphet Governor Witthaya Phiewphong (วิทยา ผิวผ่อง) revealed that the province has prepared provincial public health officials and medical equipments to prevent possible bird flu outbreak. The governor has instructed all districts which share border with Phitsanulok and Phichit provinces to set up animal checkpoints and inform local poultry farmers to confine their poultry in closed constructions until the situation has improved.



In addition, the governor has instructed the provincial public health officials to strictly inspect sick and dying poultry. He encourages local farmers to inform the provincial livestock offices of their dead poultry and calls for them to abide by the province?s preventive measures on bird flu.

The Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry has affirmed that bird flu outbreak has been found in Phitsanulok province alone.

The ministry urges Thai farmers to raise poultry in a closed farm system.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr. Yukol Limlamthong (ยุคล ลิ้มแหลมทอง), said that the ministry has conducted x-ray in all areas to find possible spread of the bird-flu pandemic since Jan 3rd. The samples of poultry has been collected and sent to lab for testing. The lab has reported that only sample of poultry from Prai Chumpon district in Phitsanulok shows negative.

All bird-flu contracted fowls have been destroyed and spread of the deadly virus in other areas has yet been reported.

However, farmers have been urged to inform their local livestock offices if signals of bird flu pandemic are shown. A closed farm system is considered as a way to help reduce the spread of the deadly virus.

The Animal Quarantine Station in Songkla Province has tightened measures inspecting the transport of poultry across the provincial border to prevent possible bird flu outbreaks.

Chief of the Songkla Animal Quarantine Station, Chaiwat Yothakon (ชัยวัฒน์ โยธคล) disclosed that the station has set up checkpoints on roads and deployed officials from various relevant units to arrest smuggling of live and dead poultry. So far, the station has been reported of nine poultry smuggling cases with evidences worth more than 300,000 baht in total.

Mr Chaiwat encourages poultry farmers and entrepreneurs to inform the authorities to inspect their poultry before transporting them to other areas.
