Man suspected of contracting bird flu in Thai north

BANGKOK, Feb. 8 (Xinhua) -- A man in Thailand's northern province Phichit was suspected of contracting bird flu as he was found with high fever for two days after contact with dead chickens, media here reported Friday.
Khanueng Limchai, 32, was admitted to the Phichit Provincial Hospital at 11 p.m. (1600 GMT) Thursday night, according to news network The Nation.
He had high fever for two days after he found dead chickens stuffed in a bag and took them home to feed his dogs. His wife earlier took him to a clinic and the clinic sent him to the provincial hospital on suspicion that he had contracted bird flu. His blood sample has been sent for checking. The result of blood test would be known in two days. On Jan. 24, Thai authorities confirmed a new bird flu outbreak has been detected at a farm in northern province Nakhon Sawan neighboring Phichit, after laboratory test found H5N1 Virus in dead chicken at the farm.

Phichit ? A suspect case of bird flu has been detected in Phichit when a man had high fever for two days after collecting dead chickens to feed his dogs.
Khanueng Limchai, 32, was admitted to the Phichit Provincial Hospital at 11 pm Thursday night.
His wife earlier took him to a clinic and the clinic sent him to the hospital on suspicion that he had contracted bird flu.
His blood sample has been sent for checking.
Doctors said the man had high fever and had breathing difficulty.
The result of blood test would be known in two days.
The man earlier found dead chickens stuffed in a bag so he took them home for his dogs.

Suphan Buri a flu risk area

Suphan Buri was declared a "bird-flu risk area" yesterday and a scrap collector in Phichit province was suspected of having caught the virus.

Suphan Buri Governor Somsak Phurisisaksaid said the province had been bird flu-free since an outbreak in October 2005, thanks to intensive moves such as spraying disinfectant every three months and door-to-door visits by health volunteers.

However, since bird-flu outbreaks have now taken place in Phichit and Nakhon Sawan, he said livestock officials were now spraying disinfectant in 10 districts and the province had declared itself a risk area.

In Phichit, the provincial hospital said yesterday it had admitted 32-year-old Muang district scrap collector who developed suspicious symptoms two days after touching 10 dead chickens he recovered from a dump and then fed to his dogs.

Khaneung Lermchai was suffering from a high fever and respiratory difficulties. He had been separated from other patients and placed in a closely monitored quarantine unit. Doctors took blood samples, which should yield lab results in the next two days.

Officials also inspected Khaneung's home and examined the family's nine members for the virus. All appeared healthy except for Khaneung's 12-year-old brother Saichol Khochasi, who had flu.

Further north, Chiang Mai municipal officials, joined forces with livestock officials and 85 community leaders to carry out disease watch measures as a precaution for possible bird-flu outbreaks, said Mayor Captain Duentemduang na Chiang Mai.

These included compiling a poultry database, a "cloacal swab" from live or freshly killed birds and regular updates on suspicious situations.

A meeting to prepare the entire community to tackle bird flu would be arranged while manpower, medical supplies and other equipment were prepared in case of an outbreak, she said.

Phichit's suspect bird-flu case tested negative


Phichit - The blood test of a man suspected of contracting bird flu became negative, the Phichit Hospital announced.

The hospital announced that Kanueng Limchai, 32, who had persistently high fever, did not contract bird flu as earlier suspected.

The man will remain in the hospital for monitoring for five days more.

Khon Kaen on bird flu high alert
BangkokPost.com) ? Khon Kaen governor Panchai Bawornrattanapran has reassured the public that strict measures have been put in place to monitor the bird flu situation in all 26 districts.

Districts which have been put on the watch list are being observed particularly closely, with x-rays and health checks being carried out almost religiously by authorities.

Mr Panchai said 15 chickens were reported dead in Muang Kao district in the past week alone but maintained preventative measures have already been taken.

?Over 200 chickens within a five kilometre radius of places where chickens died mysteriously have already been destroyed,? he said.

He urged locals to help authorities look out for symptoms of the virus and underlined the importance of eating cooked chicken meat and eggs.

Khaneung Lermchai was suffering from a high fever and respiratory difficulties.

The above comments describe a suspect H5N1 cluster in Phichit, Thailand where H5N1 was recently confirmed (see satellite map). This outbreak may be related to recent fatal cases in northern Vietnam. The outbreaks likely involve the Fujian (clade 2.3) strain of H5N1, which has caused human cases in China since 2005.
