RICHMOND HILL?An emotional day for family members of a four-year-old child who died mysteriously on from flu-like symptoms.

Elaina Redick, 4, was a student at Savannah Christian Preparatory School.

According to the school, Elaina began experiencing flu-like symptoms early Saturday morning. She was taken to Memorial Hospital where she died Sunday afternoon.

Thursday morning dozens of people gathered to say their final farewells to Elaina at the Richmond Hill United Methodist Church.

Shortly after, she was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Savannah. Family members including teachers from her school were present. Loved ones described Elaina as "an average girl who loved life."

Elaina?s oldest sister became sick the same day she passed away. It was determined that the older sister did, in fact, have the flu and was treated.

Baby Who Died of Swine Flu had Heart Ailment
ALBERT LEA, Minn. (AP) - The family of the Freeborn County infant who died of swine flu says the 5-week-old also had critical heart and lung ailments.

Addie Rust is the grandmother of William Anton Cech. She tells the Albert Lea Tribune the boy had a condition that left half his heart underdeveloped. Fluid also accumulated in his lungs that tested positive for swine flu.

Family members had to wear masks and gloves around him, until his final day. On Oct. 15, they held him without gloves as he passed away peacefully.

Ten people have died of swine flu-related illness in Minnesota. The state health department says the victims include another child from Steele County and a Martin County woman in her early 60s, and both also had underlying health conditions.

CDC: H1N1 spreading; children's death toll rises to 95

ATLANTA (WKOW) -- Government health officials now say H1N1 is to blame for the deaths of at least 95 children since April and is spreading across the country.

The new numbers out Friday from the Centers for Disease Control show swine flu is increasing in almost every state. Forty-six states now have widespread flu activity.

There are at least two different types of flu causing illness now, but testing from around 5,000 patients suggests nearly all of the flu cases are H1N1.

Second DE H1N1 death?

The state Division of Public Health is looking into whether the death of a 15-year-old boy was caused by H-1-N-1 flu.

DPH says the New Castle County teen had a number of unspecified underlying conditions and went to his doctor Monday.

Tests for seasonal flu and strep were negative, but a post-mortem test for H-1-N-1 was positive.

A 35-year-old Kent County woman died from H-1-N-1 flu Thursday morning.

AMMON - The Bonneville County Coroner said Wednesday the Hillcrest High School student that passed away Sunday died of septic shock. The coroner previously confirmed Kade Chapple did not die from the H1N1 virus.

Kade, 15, was taken to the hospital on Oct. 15 and was admitted for respiratory arrest. Because he had flu-like symptoms, it was believed he may have died from H1N1 complications.

The health department is still waiting for test results to know if Kade had contracted the virus.
Septic shock is a serious condition that is the result of an infection. Very rarely do viruses cause this condition.

The damage is done to tissue and the condition can lower blood pressure and lead to poor organ function because of toxins released by the bacteria.

The death rate is high for septic shock.

The Chapple family needs help raising money for funeral services. Thursday night Texas Roadhouse in Idaho Falls will be donating 15% of all their procedes to the Chapple family. Three Vacaville schools are closed after a first grader who died Sunday tested positive for H1N1.

Browns Valley Elementary School sent a message to parents alerting them the school will be closed until Tuesday, Oct. 27 after Alexis Clara, a girl who tested positive for the H1N1 virus, died.

"First let me say that we are still saddened over the loss of our first grade student at Browns Valley Elementary School and we are still addressing the concern that her passing may have been affected by the H1N1 flu virus," said Superintendent John Aycock.

Browns Valley students are being told to stay home this weekend to help prevent the spread of the flu in the community.

Concerned parents from Browns Valley Elementary filled Vacaville City Hall Thursday night. Many are angry that the district waited to close the school after the student died.

A Vacaville high school is shutting down voluntarily after a large number of staff and students called out sick.

Vacaville Christian High School is also closing due to the threat of the H1N1 virus. A third of the faculty and 43 students are said to be ill. The high school is set to reopen on Monday.

With the closure of the school has also come the cancellation of the Vacaville Christian volleyball, soccer and football game. Friday's football game that is scheduled between Vacaville Christian and Forest Hill High School is said to be rescheduled for next Monday night, October 26th.

Also, Millenium Preschool located off Brown's Valley Road in Vacaville has been closed for the duration of Friday. Officials say that the preschool will reopen on Monday, October 26.

Cleaning crews have been on campus cleaning as a precautionary measure, according to Millenium Sports Club.

A 5-month-old Pasco boy is the first child in the state to die of swine flu.

Aaron Lopez died Monday at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane two weeks after he came down with flu symptoms.

Health officials confirmed Saturday that he was suffering from H1N1 virus, commonly referred to as swine flu.

Although Aaron was in and out of hospitals for most of his short life, his parents, Elizabeth and Benito Lopez, said Wednesday that they were surprised swine flu ultimately caused his death.

Aaron was born in May with two holes in his heart and had surgery on his heart when he was 6 weeks old. Complications from that procedure affected his kidneys and brain, his mother said. Other illnesses followed.

"There were serious underlying health conditions, but that does not make the loss any easier for the family or the child's loved ones," said Dr. Larry Jecha, Benton-Franklin Health District officer.
Aaron was first brought home to Pasco on Aug. 17, more than three months after his birth in Spokane.
"He loved being here (at home), away from the tubes and tests," Elizabeth Lopez said in Spanish.
When his older siblings, Benito Jr., 10, and Yesenia, 9, got sick earlier this month, Elizabeth knew it was inevitable that Aaron would be infected.
"It was impossible for him to avoid it," she said.
The family also includes 5-year-old Jonathan.
Elizabeth Lopez said it was never confirmed if the older children had the flu because they were not tested. "They told me their labs were full," she said.

Jecha said during a Benton-Franklin Health District board meeting Wednesday that 44 people have been hospitalized in Benton and Franklin counties since swine flu first appeared in April -- with 37 hospitalized in the last month.
Aaron Lopez is the first Tri-City resident to die from the virus, Jecha said.
Elizabeth Lopez said she took the baby to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland on Oct. 5 when he began vomiting and got a fever.
He was flown to Spokane three days later when he developed a cough and respiratory problems, she said. At Sacred Heart he was sedated and intubated.

Gov. Chris Gregoire offered her condolences to the Lopez family in a written statement Wednesday.
"My heart goes out to the family of this baby," Gregoire said. "The last thing we want to hear is about is the death of any of our residents, but it is especially hard when it is a child. I encourage all Washingtonians to take precautions to keep themselves and their children healthy during the coming months."

Swine flu has been different than the flu strains that strike each season in that it has afflicted mainly younger people under 25. Seasonal flu typically strikes the elderly hardest, Jecha said.
Small quantities of a swine flu vaccine are trickling into the Tri-Cities, but the vaccine won't be available for widespread immunizations until mid-November.
Until the general public can be vaccinated, the health district continues to emphasize preventive measures such as frequent handwashing, covering a cough or sneeze with a tissue or sleeve, and, most importantly, staying home from work or school if sick.

Benito Lopez said he asked his children's teachers at Virgie Robinson Elementary School on Tuesday if they could stay home from school for a couple of days to help deal with their grief.
"It helps to keep the family together at home," he said.
Benito, a supervisor at Flat Top Ranch, said he wanted to allow his kids a couple of days to stay home while facing the initial trauma of losing a sibling.
"Only God knows why he took him so soon," Elizabeth said. "But now he doesn't have to suffer through any more tests and he can be at peace."
The Lopezes are receiving $500 for Aaron's funeral from the TEARS Foundation, a nonprofit organization that assists parents with final arrangement costs. No accounts have been set up so far to help the family.

The first confirmed fatality from the swine flu virus was announced today by state health officials.

The swine flu virus, known as H1N1 virus, contributed to the death of a male teenager in Twin Falls this week who had underlying health conditions, according to the South Central Public Health District.

"The death of a resident of our community saddens us deeply, and our sympathies go out to his family and other loved ones," said Rene LeBlanc, health district director, in a press release. "Although most cases of H1N1 recover without medical attention, this is an unfortunate reminder that all flu viruses can be deadly. We must continue to be vigilant in preventing the spread of the H1N1 influenza and seasonal influenza."

The health district will hold a closed H1N1 vaccination clinic Saturday for about 1,550 students who pre-registered through the schools.

First death reported in Yellowstone Co. related to H1N1 virus

Late Friday afternoon, local health officials confirmed the first death in Yellowstone County related to the H1N1 virus.

Friday night the Unified Health Command hosted a news conference, where it announced that a 6 year old child died here two weeks ago.

The Department of Public Health and Human Services has confirmed the child died of pneumonia, due to complications related to the H1N1 flu.

Health officials say the child had respiratory problems, and they suspected h1n1 at the time, but it was not confirmed until Friday. Because of federal regulations, health officials cannot release more specific information about the child.

So far, three people have died of the H1N1 flu in Montana. The other fatalities occurred in Lewis and Clark County and Roosevelt County.

3 Central Floridians Die Of Swine Flu

State Reports 131 Deaths As Of ThursdaySANFORD, Fla. -- A Brevard County man and a Seminole County teenager have become the latest local victims to die of swine flu.


Officials said the Brevard County man had underlying medical conditions and died while being treated at Florida Hospital-Orlando.

Authorities said the Seminole County victim, a 13-year-old girl, was also hospitalized at the time of her death in early October and died on Oct. 20. She had underlying medical problems.

"It is my understanding that no one else in her family has gotten ill from it, and the other piece of it is that she has been out of school long enough so that the kids that she came in contact with would already have gotten sick and be over it by now," Denise Ward of the Seminole County Health Department said.

The Brevard County victim, a 51-year-old Cocoa man, also had underlying medical problems.

An Orange County man also died Thursday from H1N1. He was 27.

Also Thursday, Seminole County officials announced they've received the swine flu, or H1N1, vaccine in shot form for pregnant women. The shot is available at 540 W. Lake Mary Blvd. in Lake Mary beginning Oct. 26.

6-year-old Billings boy dies of complications related to swine flu

BILLINGS - Health officials have confirmed that a 6-year-old Yellowstone County boy has died of complications related to swine flu.
Dr. Fred Kahn, an infectious disease specialist with St. Vincent Healthcare in Billings, said during a news conference Friday the boy died about two weeks ago of pneumonia due to complications related to influenza A, a subtype of swine flu. The diagnosis was confirmed by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services.
Kahn says the boy, who died in the pediatric intensive care unit at St. Vincent, was healthy and did not have any underlying health problems when he contracting the swine flu.
The report marks the third death attributed to the H1N1 strain of flu in Montana.

As soon as 6-year-old Heaven Wilson stepped off the school bus, her grandmother guessed that she wasn't feeling well.

Two days later, the Amelia County first-grader was rushed to CJW Medical Center (Chippenham), where she spent nearly two weeks before she died of swine flu late Wednesday.

Family members said Heaven was hooked up to breathing tubes when she mouthed her last words: "Don't let me die."

As relatives made funeral arrangements, last night school officials told parents in a telephone alert that all Amelia schools will be closed throughout next week because of flu illness, said School Board Chairman Damon Moyer. Schools and buses will be cleaned thoroughly, he said.

Heaven became the 10th person in Virginia to die of causes related to H1N1 flu.

The girl's grandmother, Patricia Sparrow, said Heaven was sick when she got home from school Oct. 7 and was taken to the doctor the next day. She had a sore throat and a temperature of 103 degrees. The doctor said she had the flu but didn't diagnose her as having the H1N1 virus, Sparrow said.

Sparrow said the doctor told her to take Heaven home and give her water and broth and Tylenol. Sparrow said she followed the instructions.

Heaven's mother, Sara Wilson, and her husband were out of town. The couple and Wilson's two sons, ages 1 and 9, live with Sparrow in Jetersville, as did Heaven. Wilson is four months pregnant.

Heaven, a first-grader at Amelia Elementary School, woke Sparrow around dawn the morning after she went to the doctor and said she couldn't breathe. Sparrow said she called 911, and an ambulance took the girl to the hospital.

"By the time they got to Chippenham hospital, she was blue" and had a fever of 106 degrees, Sparrow said.

Heaven was unconscious for much of her time at the hospital and on a respirator the entire time, Sparrow said. Family members stayed by her side, praying often.

In one of Heaven's waking moments, Wilson said, her daughter mouthed the words "I love you, Mommy."

Another time, Sparrow's ex-husband, Edward Sparrow, said he asked Heaven if she was having sweet dreams. "She shook her little head no," he said.

After Heaven developed pneumonia in both lungs and a staph infection and underwent three blood transfusions, she was taken off life support.

"I held her and cradled her in my arms until she was gone," Wilson said.

Heaven, nicknamed "Sissy," recently had learned to ride a bike without training wheels, wanted to play soccer and hoped to resume ballet lessons, her grandmother said. Edward Sparrow planned to teach her to play the guitar.

"Make sure that your kids get thoroughly checked out," Wilson said, "and make sure the school they go to is thoroughly sanitized."

Heaven's death occurred when flulike illness seemed to be on the decline in the 1,812-student Amelia school system. At one point last week, daily absences rose to 333 students, but by Thursday that number had dropped to 229.

David M. Gangel, school superintendent, said he was not surprised that absences increased to 311 yesterday, a rise he said was likely due to the child's death.

The school system was originally told that enough H1N1 vaccine for everyone would arrive by this past Tuesday, he said. On Wednesday, the school system got enough vaccine for only prekindergarten through second grades, and fewer than 50 percent of those students had returned parental permission slips.

Family and close friends of Heaven will gather for a viewing tomorrow from 5 to 7 p.m. at Joseph McMillian Funeral Home, 1826 Cox Road in Nottoway County.

The death of 3-year-old Silas James Gautreaux could be linked to the H1N1 virus, his mother, Chayla Levine Gautreaux said Friday morning. The toddler died Wednesday at Dauterive Hospital in New Iberia.

Toddler Positive for Influenza A Dies in Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- The coroner in Athens County says it will likely take six to eight weeks before he knows for sure if a toddler died from complications of the swine flu.

Dr. Harold Thompson says that a three-year-old girl from Athens County died this week at the hospital. She had tested positive for the Influenza A Virus.

Dr. Thompson says they want to make certain there were no other reasons for the death.

The girl's name is not being released.

Saturday President Barack Obama declared Swine Flu outbreak a national emergency.

The declaration gives Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius the power to let hospitals move emergency rooms offsite to speed treatment and protect the non-infected.

These children that have filled these pages are never to be forgotten. These babies, bright and vibrant, the loved ones of any age, are in my own personal thoughts, as we go through these very trying times.

PEMBROKE, N.Y. (WIVB) - New concerns are developing following the the sudden death of a 5th grader at the Corfu Intermediate School in Pembroke.

On Friday, authorities said Jared Peter's death was not flu related.

However, a statement posted on the district's website says quote, "In our most recent consultation with the Genesee County Health Department and the New York State Department of Health, the district has confirmed that the cause of death for the Pembroke Central School student is still to be determined."

A wake for Jared Peters is being held until 8 p.m. on Sunday at the Wendell and Loecher Funeral Home on Aurora Street in Lancaster.

Funeral Services will be held Monday morning at Saint Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, also in Lancaster.

A Morgantown High School student is dead after being hospitalized with the swine flu. The Dominion Post says 17-year-old Misty Cricks died yesterday afternoon at Ruby Memorial Hospital. Cricks starting showing symptoms about two weeks ago. She had been on a ventilator in the pediatric intensive care unit. An autopsy will be done to determine a cause of death. Cricks' mother says she was told the girl was brain dead.

If the autopsy shows she died due to complications from the virus, it will be the sixth H1N1-related death in the state. While flu cases are up 500 percent in Monongalia County, this would be the first reported death.
