Two children - Shankar Saud (7) and Pune Air (7) - died of an unidentified disease at Khatiwada VDC-3, Doti district, on Sunday. Madan Bahadur Saud, Shankar’s father, said his seven-year-old son breathed his last at a local medical centre after health officials there could not offer treatment as they could not diagnose the disease. Three days ago, a person had also died from the disease in same the village. These mystery deaths have terrorised the people of this village. Chudamani Bhandari, Senior Health Officer, Doti, said a medical team has been sent to the affected village with drugs.

It looks like this was a maternal death during delivery, and not the result of disease, but it is in the same village as above. And we know H1N1 has a higher toll among pregnant women.

Dipayal: Unavailability of heath workers in local health centre has claimed a pregnant woman of Khatiwada VDC-8 last night.

Narudevi Saud (35) died while being rushed to district hospital in Doti after she could not get treatment at local health post as both auxiliary nurse midwife and auxiliary health worker were in the district headquarters to attend a training programme.

“We took her to the health post but there was no one to attend not her. So, we were forced to take her to the district hospital. But we could not save her,” said Bharmal Saud, the kin of the deceased.

Narudevi is survived by two daughters.

Though an additional post of auxiliary nurse midwife was created at the health post with the financial assistance from VDC, locals in most of the cases are deprived of medical care.

District Public Health Office had no officials to comment when approached by this correspondent. Two minors had died of an unidentified disease in the same village a few days ago.
