Lucknow, Sep 16 (PTI) In the first swine flu casualty in the city, a man succumbed to the deadly virus at a private hospital, a health official said today.

"Swab samples of a patient, who died at a private hospital on Monday night, tested positive for swine flu infection," Director General Health R R Bharti said.

He claimed that the patient was already suffering from serious ailments and was admitted to the hospital after being diagnosed with symptoms of swine flu.

"His condition, which showed signs of improvement initially, deteriorated further leading to his death," Bharti claimed.

Amresh Sinha, 37, died at a private hospital yesterday, health officials said today.

The first victim was A K Singh, who died on September 14.

Lucknow A 16-year-old girl, who tested positive for swine flu virus on Monday night, died on Tuesday.

Akansha, a resident of Aliganj area, is the youngest and third patient to die from H1N1 virus in the state capital.

She was admitted to Vivekanand Polyclinic on November 27 with high fever. ?She was straightaway put on a ventilator in the ICU,? said Swami Muktinathanand, secretary, Vivekanand Polyclinic. ?We sent the samples for test to a private testing centre for quick results,? he added. ?The girl died with bilateral bronco pneumonia and tested positive for swine flu as well,? said Dr A K Shukla, Chief Medical Officer of Lucknow.

Meanwhile, health officials claimed Rae Bareli resident Amresh Sinha, who died on Monday, was infected with Influenza A virus and not H1N1. ?He tested negative for H1N1 but positive for Influenza A, a new virus,? said Dr R K Khanna, Director, Communicable and Vector-borne Disease. ?Till now, only two such cases have come up in the state, the other one from Lucknow,? he added.

Till now, 287 cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the state. While the state Health department has admitted to only one swine flu death to date ? A K Singh, who died in Lucknow on September 14 ?three deaths from the H1N1 virus have been reported in the state. Experts believe with the drop in temperature, swine flu virus will proliferate and it is expected that the number of the cases will rise.

Thirty five-year-old Asha succumbed to swine flu in Lucknow on Saturday.

She tested positive on December 3, after which she was allegedly refused entry to a number of private hospitals. She was finally transferred to the isolation ward in CSMMU on Friday night.


Deep Kumar Anand, her brother-in-law said: ?She had no other complications but had fever on November 26. The doctors at Awadh Hospital suggested that she undergoes the swine flu test. We went for the test at RML Malhotra pathology on December 1 and she tested positive on December 3.? ?Before this, we had taken her to SGPGI on December 2 but was refused admission because of lack of ventilators,? he said. ?When the reports came, FI Hospital near Burlington crossing refused to keep her due to lack of seclusion ward. The chief medical officer was informed about it and he sent a rapid response team for sample collection at FI Hospital. But the reports have yet not come and the administration refuses to accept the reports from RML Malhotra laboratory,? said Anand.

?There are only eight ventilators in Critical Care unit of Medicine department of SGPGI. They are not dedicated for swine flu patients alone and at the time the patient came, the ventilators were probably not available,? said A K Bhatt, CMS of SGPGI.

Though Delhi government authorities added only four deaths to their cumulative death figure (34), they said another person also died at Guru Teg Bahadur hospital late Sunday night. The victim was from Uttar Pradesh.

'The patient was not a resident of Delhi and we are not including the death in the cumulative total of Delhi,' Anjana Prakash, the state's assistant nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

KANPUR: A 24-year-old woman Kavita Rana died of suspected swine flu on Sunday evening at a private hospital. She had been admitted to hospital with pneumonia-like symptoms on Tuesday.

She was also eight-month pregnant and delivered a healthy baby through Caesarean, after which her health deteriorated. The doctors put her on ventilator and sent her swab to a private pathology lab in city (recognised by the Centre) for HINI test on Friday.
After the lab confirmed her to be a positive case of H1N1 virus on Saturday, the hospital authorities informed the district health authorities. The chief medical officer (CMO) provided Tamiflu to the patient as well as to the doctors and staff of the hospital. However, she died on Sunday evening.

Meanwhile, CMO Ashok Mishra has sent her swab samples to Sanjay Gandhi Post-Graduate Institute (SGPGI) Lucknow for the confirmation.

After eating its own words on the death of one Kavita Rana, who was declared as Kanpur?s first swine flu victim, the district health authorities are no longer willing to rely on the reports of private pathology centres.

A New Delhi-based private pathology centre of had earlier confirmed that 24-year-old Rana was infected with H1N1 virus, and based on the report Kanpur district authorities had included her in the list of swine flu victims.

But later a report filed by Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) stated that Rana did not die of swine flu but pregnancy-related complications.

Stung by this, the health authorities are not at all willing to comment whether two-year-old Aryan Rathod, who died in a private hospital in Kanpur on December 17, was a victim of swine flu.

The child?s father has, however, claimed that a report from a Delhi-based pathology centre confirmed that his son was infected with H1N1 virus.

Agra, Dec 20 (IANS) With one more person dying of suspected swine flu, raising the toll to two in the Taj City, residents here are concerned about the lack of adequate and affordable medical services.
A 35-year-old woman died Saturday afternoon at the SN Medical College due to suspected swine flu and one patient was admitted Saturday night with symptoms of the disease.
Medical Superintendent B.K. Agarwal said the medical report of the deceased was still awaited from a New Delhi lab.

Residents of several localities approached the health authorities, demanding a camp for screening of all the people.

Chief Medical Officer Ram Ratan confirmed late Saturday night that a health camp would be held in Krishna Colony, from where the death was reported, to screen the residents.

Private doctors in the city feel the system cannot cope with any large-scale flareup, as even elementary health services were lacking.

Dr Shivani Chaturvedi, eminent gynaecologist and medical activist, said: ?We are in for a major disaster. The government health sector cannot cope with any crisis, no mock drills have been held, resources are lacking and there is lack of motivation at all levels.?

?Frankly, everyone is a potential victim of swine flu. The fear is palpable and large scale. They keep saying it is a media created hype, but the medical fraternity knows for sure we are in for an explosive situation as the temperatures dip further,? Chaturvedi added.

Housewife Usha Devi complained: ?Government hospitals do not inspire confidence and private nursing homes are beyond the reach of the common man.?

Even hoteliers reported a decline in the number of tourists, especially those coming from Jaipur to the Taj City. Their fear is that news of the scare could adversely affect tourism in Agra.

Sandeep Arora, owner of Hotel Kamal in Tajganj locality and former president of the Agra Hotels and Restaurants Association, told IANS: ?Swine flu has already hit tourism. It?s not a question of distant future. Both (David Coleman) Headley and swine flu have hit Agra. Hotel rooms are available even though it is peak season. Ticket sales at the Taj Mahal have gone down. It?s a serious situation?.?

However, a health official, on condition of anonymity, said it was all a ?media blowup?.

NTPC schools prepone Christmas holidays

Noida, Dec 20 (PTI) Schools located at National Thermal Power Plant complex at Dadri preponed the Christmas holidays following death of a woman due to swine flu in the area.

A woman died of swine flu in the colony on Thursday [Dec 17]. So keeping in view the health of students, NTPC decided to prepone Christmas holidays in its schools by five days, a senior NTPC official said.

So instead of closing the schools from December 24, the holidays were declared on Saturday itself, he said, adding that the schools have been asked to get their premises clean and sensitised.

GSVM bemoan lack of funds

KANPUR: Even when the Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) medical college is facing criticism for not handling swine flu cases with the sincerity and care required, the medical college authorities are trying to pass the buck to district health administration for not providing them with enough funds.

GSMV principal Anand Swaroop claimed swine flu ward at IDH could have ventilators if district administration provided them with money from their crisis fund.

However, district magistrate Anil Kumar Sagar informed TOI that the state government had not pro vided such fund and it was entirely the responsibility of the medical college to deal with swine flu pa tients as it had its separate source of funding.

He also maintained that it was never on their (his or CMO's) part to provide ventilator facility to medical colleges as they were not liable to do so, nor were they provi ded funds for the purpose by the state government.

Chief medical officer (CMO) Ashok Mishra also pointed out that "spe cial funds are allocated to medical colleges for medication and treat ment of swine flu patients. But, they are asking us to provide venti lators and other equipments which is not our duty."

On Sunday night, GSVM had refu sed to admit H1N1 positive woman Pinki quoting unavailability of ventilator. However, on the condi tion that the cost of the ventilator and other medical expenses be borne by the CMO, Pinki was ad mitted to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) -- an associated hos pital of GSVM Medical College la ter in the night.

Admitting that it was not the right way to ensure treatment to a swine flu patient, the CMO said: "As it was an emergency case and the condition of the patient was critical, the decision to pay daily rent of the ventilator from my side was taken. Moreover, the family was also financially week as could not afford treatment at private nursing home."

Also, death of H1N1 patient Vishal Kumar Gupta on Sunday had also exposed the ill-preparedness of GSVM.

Kanpur, Dec 26 (PTI) A suspected swine flu patient died here, health officials said today.

The woman was in serious condition last night when she was admitted at the Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Medical College, Chief Medical Secretary D V N Tripathi said.

The victim died before she could be put on a ventilator.

Her blood samples have been sent to the lab to confirm the presence of the H1N1 virus, he said.

Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer AK Mishra said if the samples test positive for the H1N1 virus death toll due to swine flu in the district will rise to four.

Another swine flu death, this time from Bahraich

Anil Gupta, a resident of Bahraich, succumbed to swine flu on Friday at CSMMU. This is the first death reported Bahraich and 15th from the state. ?Anil was around 20 years old and had tested positive for swine flu when his samples were sent to the SGPGI. He died late night Friday,? said Chief Medical Officer, Lucknow, Dr A K Shukla. Till Saturday, the total number of swine flu patients in the state was 860.

Swine flu kills young woman in Allahabad

Allahabad, Jan 3 (PTI) Swine flu claimed its first victim in the city today when a young woman succumbed to the disease after battling it for nearly a week.

City-based beautician Vartika, 26, had contracted the H1N1 virus in Pune where she had gone on December 26, Deputy Chief Medical Officer V K Srivastava told PTI.

He said on December 27, Vartika had developed symptoms like cough and fever. Though she did not get herself tested, she took medicines for common viral fever.

By December 30, her condition deteriorated considerably and she was admitted to a hospital where she was kept on a ventilator, the Dy CMO said adding that it was only then that the district health authorities were informed about her condition.

Following this her samples were sent for testing.

"Her test reports came on December 31 and she had tested positive for the H1N1 virus.

One more succumbs to H1N1

KANPUR: With one more death reported here on Thursday, as many as six people have succumbed to H1N1 infection in the city so far. And nearly 27 have been tested positive for H1N1 influenza virus. The main cause of death in all the cases was the respiratory failure. The doctors said despite suffering from breathlessness, all patients reported very late to the hospital.

Ram Karan (47), a resident of Rasoolabad, Kanpur Dehat was admitted for only three hours at Ursala Horsman Memorial (UHM) Hospital on January 5, when the attendants along with him switched him over to Infective Disease Hospital (IDH). After spending 18-20 hours at IDH, the patient expired on January 6.

According to chief medical officer Dr Ashok Mishra: "Since the medical report of Ram Karan was received on Thursday confirming him H1N1 positive, the diseased was admitted in the general swine flu ward at IDH instead of being treated separately in an isolation ward."

In the year 2009-10, as many as 27 cases have been reported as H1N1 positive including two cases from district Kanpur Dehat. Nearly 303 suspected cases have received Tamiflu in 2009.

After a break of almost four months, swine flu is back in the heart of Uttar Pradesh.

A resident of Barabanki, Jyoti Singh (25), admitted to CSMMU, tested positive for the disease on Sunday.

Singh was admitted to ICU on July 15 as a patient of bilateral pneumonia. In the evening, with her condition deteriorating, she had to be given ventilator support. Later, reports from SGPGI confirmed that she had swine flu.

?She was moved to the Swine Flu Ward in the Emergency ward of CSMMU. She is still on ventilator,? said Dr Narsingh Verma, Medical Superintendent of CSMMU. ?She has been given Tamiflu as we had the medicine available. Her condition, however, is critical.?

The Chief Medical Officer, who has been informed about the situation, will visit the patient tomorrow, he said.

This year, the state saw 90 cases of swine flu. Four deaths have occurred so far. Most cases surfaced in January and February. A 7-year-old boy from Ghaziabad died of the H1N1 virus in the first week of July.

Woman dies of swine flu, UP on alert


UP was put on alert Monday after a woman who had tested positive for H1N1 virus died of multiple organ failure ? the fifth swine flu death in the state this year.

Jyoti Singh, 25, from Barabanki, had tested positive for Influenza A H1N1 on Sunday evening at CSM Medical University, where she was admitted with pneumonia on July 15. Doctors also suspected dengue as her platelet count was fast reducing.

Jyoti had gone to Balaji Temple in Rajasthan on June 30 and had returned to Barabanki on July 9. ?She developed cough, cold and fever after returning to Barabanki,? said CMO Dr A K Chaudhari. ?All her contacts were given precautionary treatment.?

?An alert has been issued in all districts. We have also put in a word with the medical unit in Rajasthan because she had visited that state,? said a senior health official of IDSP, UP.

Dead man found positive for swine flu

Lucknow A 40-year-old man, Jatin Prasad (40), who died on July 24 at the SGPGI, has tested positive for the H1N1 virus. The test results came after his death. Prasad, a resident of Badaun, was admitted to SGPGI on July 12 with a number of problems including multiple organ damage due to diabetes. Shifted to the Endocrinology ward on July 14, he suffered a cardiac arrest, after which he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit.

?He was a chronic smoker and alcoholic and was also being treated for tuberculosis,? said Prof AK Baronia, Head of the Department of Critical Care Medicine and In Charge of the ICU. He had severe septic shock, and failed kidneys and infection in lungs. ?After his death, tests showed that he was H1N1 positive. But there were multiple causes for his death and it cannot be completely attributed to H1N1,? Baronia added. The case is yet to be reported as a swine flu death at the H1N1 control room.

Lucknow, Jul 27 (PTI) With the death of a 40-year-old man, the toll due to swine flu in Uttar Pradesh has risen to two this month, officials said here today.Jatan Prasad, hailing from Badaun, who was admitted at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI) last week, died on Sunday.Though it was initially believed that he died of kidney failure, a test report received after his death confirmed that his death was due to H1N1 infection, they said.On July 19, 25-year-old Jyoti Singh died of swine flu at the Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University here.Even since the outbreak of H1N1 virus in March 2009, UP has reported 1,313 lab-confirmed cases of the deadly flu, of which 21 people have died.

SGPGI campus resident tests positive for swine flu

With 10 H1N1 cases reported in the last 15 days, the authorities fear that swine flu is on the rise again in the state. Yet another case was confirmed late on Friday night when a 45-year-old woman at the SGPGI campus tested positive.



Rekha Rani, wife of an SGPGI professor who went on a tour to Haridwar recently, tested positive on July 30. ?She went to Haridwar last week and her sample was sent for testing on July 29. She tested positive on Friday but there is nothing to worry about as both she and her contacts have been given Tamiflu. She has been isolated at home in the PGI campus itself,? said Lucknow chief medical superintendent Dr A K Shukla.



Before this, 25-year-old Jyoti Singh from Barabanki and 40-year-old Jatin Prasad from Badaun had succumbed to the disease in Lucknow on July 19 and July 24 respectively. Another death occurred earlier this month in Ghaziabad. A total of 100 swine flu cases have been reported in the state so far this year, of whom six have died. Last year 17 people succumbed to the flu in Uttar Pradesh. The total number of cases in the state last year was 871.
