As many as 20 people, including two children, tested positive for swine flu here Wednesday, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 124 in the national capital, an official said. "Twenty people have tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1) in Delhi including two children and 18 adults,"
Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

Delhi has so far reported seven swine flu deaths this year. There have been as many as 1,692 swine flu related deaths in the country since its outbreak in May 2009.

The number of dengue cases has shot up to 76 in the Capital, with eight more persons testing positive for the disease on Wednesday. There has also been one dengue death in the Capital. The victim had contracted the disease during a visit to his hometown in Bihar. Till now, the Municipal Corporation
of Delhi (MCD) has issued notice to 37,187 people and fined 3,942 for mosquito breeding on their premises. ?We?re taking all necessary precautions to ensure there's no outbreak,? said an MCD official.

Meanwhile, 20 new cases of influenza A (H1N1), also known as swine flu, were reported from the city, with one person succumbing to the disease. Eight persons have died of swine flu in Delhi this season.

Twenty-five more swine flu cases were reported in the national capital, officials said today.

This brings the total number of cases of H1N1 influenza in the city to 197 this year and a total of 9,895 cumulative cases from May 2009.

"25 people tested positive for H1N1 virus in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of people affected by the virus rose to 197," a health ministry official said.

"We fear the number of cases of swine flu may increase due to high humidity here. High-risk patients like children and pregnant women need to be extra careful," he said.

NEW DELHI: Four persons died due to swine flu, taking the toll of those who succumbed to the deadly H1N1 virus to 13 this year.

"Four deaths due to swine flu virus have been reported from different hospitals here in last 24 hours. Only one of the deceased is from Delhi," a health ministry official said.

Eleven others have tested positive for the dreaded virus, taking the total number of cases of H1N1 influenza in the city to 208.

"One death was reported yesterday at the Escorts hospital too but if it was a case of H1N1 virus or not is yet to be ascertained," he said.

"We fear the number of cases of swine flu may increase due to high humidity here. High-risk patients like children and pregnant women need to be extra careful," he said.

Swine flu back in city, 5 deaths in single day

NEW DELHI: The swine flu threat is back in the capital. On a day when the World Health Organization declared the H1N1 pandemic over, Delhi reported five deaths due to the viral influenza on Tuesday ? taking the total number of fatalities caused by the disease this season to 13.

The city has so far recorded 208 confirmed cases this season.

The high death rate from the disease has led to speculation that the H1N1 strain could have mutated to a more virulent form in the second phase. This, however, hasn't been confirmed through laboratory tests.
Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu in the capital, said three deaths were reported from Ram Manohar Lohia hospital while one patient died at Gangaram hospital and another at Escorts. Four of the victims were aged between 30 and 50 years. Due to the rains, experts said, the virus is likely to spread.

Two of the five patients suffering from swine flu who died on Tuesday were from Haryana and had been referred by private hospitals, said Dr T S Sidhu, MS of RML hospital. ??They were on ventilator. The third patient, a woman who lived in Karol Bagh, had been in the hospital for four days.?? One of the patients had borderline diabetes, he added.

Since July, the number of swine flu cases has increased sharply and fatalities are high.

??Swine flu cases are expected to increase during the rains. But the increase in number of deaths needs to be investigated. At present, we can only presume that the virus may have mutated or that the patients who succumbed to the flu had underlying diseases which caused death. Delayed diagnosis is also a major reason behind deaths due to swine flu,?? said Dr Bir Singh, head of community medicine at AIIMS.

Dr Shobha Broor, professor of microbiology at AIIMS, said that the condition is not alarming. ??Till date, we have not observed any change in the strain or increase in virulence of H1N1 strain. Simple influenza also causes death if the patient has underlying problems. Further investigations will be required to find out the reason behind deaths being reported due to viral influenza,?? she said.

India has recently launched indigenous swine flu vaccines. However, not many have got themselves inoculated possibly due to the fear of side-effects. Meanwhile, WHO director general Margaret Chan said since the 2009 H1N1 virus had ??largely run its course??, it was no longer considered a pandemic.

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) One more person succumbed to swine flu in the national capital taking the death toll due to the H1N1 virus to 14 this year.

"A 50-year-old woman, a resident of east-Delhi, who had tested positive for the virus died in GTB hospital yesterday," a Health Ministry official said.

Twenty-six more people tested positive for the dreaded virus, taking the total number of cases of H1N1 influenza in the city to 234.

"We fear the number of swine flu cases may increase due to high humidity here. High-risk patients like children and pregnant women need to be extra careful," he said.

30 more cases of swine flu in Delhi

Swine flu may be slowly making a comeback in the capital with 30 new confirmed cases reported Thursday.

The total number of patients infected by the Influenza A (H1N1) virus in Delhi this year is now 254, an official said.

'Thirtyone people tested positive for swine flu but there have been no deaths today (Thursday),' Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

Delhi has reported 14 deaths due to the virus this year.

According to the health ministry, 1,833 swine flu deaths have occurred in India till Aug 9 - since its outbreak in May last year.

Spurt in swine flu cases adds to Games-weary govt's woes

NEW DELHI: As if the ongoing controversy over alleged corruption in the Commonwealth Games projects and reports of lacklusture preparations are not enough, the sudden spurt in swine flu cases has only added to the government's anxieties. It is worried over attendence of foreign participants and tourists in the mega event to be held between October 3 and 14.

Taking note of the rise in swine flu cases in the Capital, officials here are concerned whether such reports may play a spoilsport at a time when participating nations have been keenly observing everything associated with the preparation of the Games.

"Any kind of alert, whether it is related to health or security, is causing lot of concerns keeping in mind the kind of impression it sends to foreign participants," an official said.

Over 10,000 athletes from 71 countries and 500,000 spectators are expected to take part in the upcoming Games.

Woman dies of swine flu in Delhi, toll rises to 15

New Delhi, Aug 13 (IANS) A woman died of swine flu here Friday, taking the toll due to H1N1 to 15 in the city, an official said.
The 27-year-old woman was a resident of Delhi and admitted to the Ganga Ram Hospital.

Meanwhile, 27 more confirmed cases have been reported in the capital as the total number of patients infected by the Influenza A (H1N1) virus reached 281 this year, Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

?Twenty-seven people tested positive for swine flu,? Bhattacharya added.

According to the health ministry, 1,853 swine flu deaths have occurred in India till Aug 10 - since its outbreak in May last year.

The ministry has asked the states and union territories to make vaccination against H1N1 mandatory, if required.

New Delhi, Aug 16 (IANS) At least 29 more confirmed cases of swine flu were reported from the national capital Monday, taking the total number to 362, an official said.

Rise in cases of swine flu, dengue in Delhi


New Delhi: Rise in cases of swine flu and dengue fever continue unabated in the city with two more deaths due to the deadly virus being reported and several people being infected by the water-borne disease.

"Two deaths due to H1N1 virus have been reported in the last 24 hours. One death was reported from Ram Manohar Lohia hospital and another from Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital. With this, the total number of deaths due to swine flu rose to 17, of which, 10 alone are from Delhi", said Dr Debashish Bhattacharya, the nodal officer for H1N1 cases.

Thirty four others tested positive for H1N1 virus and with this, the total number of people who tested positive for H1N1 virus till date stood at 396.

Meanwhile, a cleanliness drive was carried out in Jamia Nagar and Okhla area to prevent fresh cases of water-borne diseases from breaking out.

Swine flu claims 35-yr-old in city

NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old patient suffering from swine flu succumbed to the disease at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital on Wednesday. The victim was from outside Delhi.

According to Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu in the capital, 33 new cases were reported on Wednesday which included 10 children. Delhi has reported 18 deaths due to the viral influenza so far and a total of 429 cases have been reported.

"The patient was referred from a private hospital and his condition was serious. He was on ventilator for the last 24 hours,'' said a health official. He said the weather is conducive for spread for swine flu virus. People with underlying diseases, particularly elderly patients need to take extra precautions.

Dengue Cases Rise to 461, Swine Flu 322 in Delhi

With 32 more people tested positive for H1N1 virus and 25 for dengue today, the total number of swine flu and infection by female Aedes aegypti mosquito cases rose to 461 and 322 respectively so far this year, health officials said.

"The total laboratory confirmed swine flu cases in the city is 461 till date this year. 32 fresh swab test in the city confirmed for presence of H1N1 virus. This includes eight children," Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine in the city said.

"25 people tested positive for dengue fever in the last 24 hours. With this the total number of people who tested positive for dengue fever rose to 322," MCD medical health officer N Yadav said.

"We have appointed 392 extra staff for the next three months to carry out fogging and anti-mosquito breeding exercises," he said.

Now, private hospitals to treat swine flu cases

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has decided to rope in private hospitals to deal with the increasing number of swine flu cases and related deaths in the capital. According to Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu in Delhi, six hospitals including Apollo Hospital, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Max Hospital and St Stephen's Hospital will soon have isolation and admission facilities for patients. Currently, only government-run hospitals have special facilities for treatment of H1N1 influenza.

On Tuesday, two more swine flu deaths were reported in the city taking the total number of fatalities this season to 17. A 47-year-old person who tested positive for swine flu died at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital while a 26-year-old patient succumbed to the disease at B R Ambedkar Hospital in west Delhi. As many as 34 new cases were reported, including two children, taking the total number of swine flu cases to 396.

"The six private hospitals have already been screening swine flu cases. We are writing to them to restart the isolation and admission facilities,'' said Bhattacharya. He said the move will help in providing timely treatment to patients. Health officials said though the government has designated six of its hospitals for isolation and admission of swine flu patients, the maximum rush has been reported at RML and Lok Nayak Hospital. "People suspected for swine flu come here from all parts of the city and even outside. Due to this, we are under great pressure at times,'' said a senior doctor at RML Hospital. Other government hospitals having separate facilities for treatment of swine flu cases include GTB Hospital, Hindu Rao Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital, Baba Ambedkar Hospital and Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsa Hospital.

Roping in private hospitals will help in dealing with the situation, said health officials. Each private hospitals will have up to 10 isolation wards. When contacted, a spokesperson of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital confirmed that the hospital was ready with the facilities. "We created special facilities for treatment of swine flu patients just last year. If the government asks, we are ready to resume with the services again,'' said the spokesperson.

An official from Max Hospital said all required facilities are in place. "If the government allows private healthcare to treat swine flu patients, our hospital is willing to meet the requisite guidelines within a specified time period,'' said Dilpreet Brar, regional director, Max Healthcare.

Two die of swine flu in Delhi


New Delhi, Aug 20 (IANS) Two people died of swine flu in Delhi Friday and 41 people tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1), an official said.
?Forty-one people tested positive for swine flu. Two deaths have been reported today (Friday) - one died in GTB hospital and the other in RML hospital,? Debashish Bhattacharya, nodal officer for swine flu, told IANS.

The total number of people infected by the virus has risen to 501.

Delhi has so far reported 10 deaths due to the virus this year. A total of 1,752 people have died due to swine flu in the country since its outbreak in May 2009.

These two fatalities bring Delhi's total to 20, of whom 10 were city residents, 8 from outside the city, the origin of the latest two is undetermined yet.

Dengue, swine flu cases up

NEW DELHI: With 26 new cases of dengue and 41 of swine flu, the Capital on Friday saw a sudden spurt in the twin menace. Two swine flu deaths, one each at Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital and Lohia Hospital, were also reported taking the grand total to 20 so far this season.

?Delhi has so far reported 348 cases of dengue, the highest during one season in four years, and 501 of swine flu. With the increased number of cases, the Delhi Government has intensified its drive against dengue and is seeking public assistance to help fight the two diseases by maintaining cleanliness,'' said Delhi Health Minister Kiran Walia.

Stating that mass campaign and public participation was the only way to combat the twin menace, Prof. Walia said she along with health officials had been taking the rounds of various colonies of the Capital that have reported a large number of dengue cases this season.

Prof. Walia said officers in charge of GTB Hospital, Pant Hospital, JP Hospital, DDU Hospital, Ambedkar Hospital, Rao Tula Ram Hospital and Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital have been asked to ensure that there are adequate stocks in their blood banks.

In addition, platelet separator facilities are also available at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences, Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital and Sucheta Kriplani Hospital. ?There is no shortage of platelets either in Delhi Government or private hospitals,'' said Prof. Walia.

Meanwhile, in view of the rash of complaints from South Delhi areas, the Malviya Nagar government hospital has been activated to attend to dengue patients round-the-clock.

?We are requesting residents' welfare associations to make announcements requesting people to maintain cleanliness in and around their houses. We will issue public notices and advertisements sensitising people about the ways to save themselves from dengue. People should not let water accumulate in and around their houses,'' said the Minister.
