Sand sculpture created on Puri beach to spread swine flu awareness


Sand artist Sudarshan Pattnaik created a sculpture depicting swine flu at Puri beach, to generate awareness of the disease.

Pattnaik, an international sand artist, created a ten-feet-long pig, and a face wearing a mask, with a message 'Beat the Swine Flu' on Friday.

"To create awareness about the swine flu, we have created this sand art. In the last few days many people have been affected by this disease, and more than eight people have died also, and many are admitted in the hospitals as well. Puri beach attracts a lot of tourists, so, to create awareness among them we have created this art," said Pattnaik.

Tourists are regularly treated by Pattnaik's sculptures at Puri beach, most of which carry a social message.

"This is a different kind of art. This is giving a very important message to the society. The swine flu has affected not only Orissa or West Bengal but whole of India as well. So, everybody should follow the message given by this sand artist and I really liked it," said Raju, a tourist.

Alarmed by the significant rise in fatalities due to the deadly disease, medical centres in states across the country have been organising camps, particularly in the rural areas to create awareness amongst the people.

The H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, created panic and fear worldwide in the year 2008. The virus is generally found in pigs but has the same symptoms as any seasonal flu. By Sharda Lehangir (ANI)

Thousands of people converged at the Independence Day celebrations in Orissa on Sunday despite the threat of swine flu, which has killed eight people in the state since July this year. Large numbers of people, including women and children, witnessed the state level parade at Bhubaneswar. Some were
seen wearing masks.

Children and students in large numbers joined the celebrations in their schools and educational institutions across the state even as the government Friday asked the authorities to avoid such assemblies.

Swine flu has infected 35 people, with eight more cases testing positive for H1N1 on Saturday.

Bhubaneswar, Aug 16 (IANS) The swine flu toll in Orissa rose to nine Monday with the state government confirming the death of a 32-year-old man in a government hospital due to H1N1.
The man died Saturday at Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Medical College and Hospital at Burla in Sambalpur district. ?His swab report came today (Monday) and it was found positive,? a senior state health official told IANS.

At least three more people were tested positive for the swine flu Monday, taking the total number of people with the infection in the state to 38, he said.

Only 18 of them are undergoing treatment in various private and government hospitals, the official said.

Swine Flu suspect admitted to hospital in Malkangiri of Orissa


Report by Deba Prasad Dash; Malkangiri: Nayan Chandra Sarkar, resident of M.V-13 village who had recently returned from Bhubaneswar, one of the worst H1N1 hit city in the state today admitted to the district headquarter hospital today, district 's first suspected case of the disease. He had been to the state capital recently for the admission of one of his relative in B.Tech course.

He was admitted to the hospital here, after reporting symptoms similar to swine flu, an official said Chief District Medical Officer Rabindra Kumar Nath to this paper. Sarkar is under going treatment in the isolated ward of the hospital and his condition is stable after he has been given Tami flu tablet, Nath added. His sample has been sent for further examination. Panic began to spread in the town soon the report of Sarkar suffering from swine flu symptoms admitted to the hospital here today. But, the health officials appealed the people not to be panic as the department is ready to meet with any eventuality.

Seven more tested swine flu positive in Orissa

Bhubaneswar, Aug 18 (PTI) Seven more persons were today tested swine flu positive in Orissa, the disease which had so far claimed nine lives in the current spell in the state, officials said.

Of the total 12 swab samples sent for examination, seven were tested positive, a health official said.

With this, the total number of H1N1 positive cases in the state increased to 46, he said.

Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare Secretary Anu Garg said proper and timely treatment can make a person completely cure of the disease.

BNO Desk: Breaking News! Seven more positive cases of H1N1 were reported across the state, taking the number of positive Swine Flu cases in Orissa to 54. No casualties have been reported in the last two days.



Out of 54, nine people have already died, while 20 are undergoing treatment at various government and private hospitals.



The new Swine Flu cases were reported from Kalinga Hospital (Bhubaneswar), Apollo Hospital (Bhbaneswar) and Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital (Burla).

Balangir: Two persons, Chaitnya Bhoi of Luhurapada village and Dukhishyam Patel of Madhiapaali, have been confirmed with swine flu symptoms. According to reports, Bhoi who was working as a labourer in Mumbai returned to his village Luhurapada.

When he was in Mumbai, he was affected by swine flu and took Tamiflu tablets.
He developed flu-like symptom when he returned to his village and he was referred to the VSS Medical College Hospital at Burla and his swab test tested positive.

In another case, the swab test of Dukhishyam Patel of Madhiapali has also tested positive. Dukhishyam was working as a labourer in one of the spinning mills of Tamil Nadu.

The district administration has given an ambulance for the transportation of family members of Dukhishyam, including his wife to Burla for swab test and treatment at VSS Medical College and Hospital, said CDMO Dr PC Sahu. The district task force team visited Jagannathpada and Madhiapali village. Dukhishyam Patel lived in some corner of the village and his neighbours were not aware of it, said Sahu. The condition of Dukhi Shyam and Chaitnya Bhoi, who are undergoing treatment at Burla are stable. We are keeping a tab on the situation, Sahu said.

Swine flu toll rises to 10 in Orissa


Bhubaneswar, Aug 23 (IANS) A woman died of swine flu here Monday, taking the H1N1 toll since July to 10 in Orissa, an official said.
?The latest victim of swine flu was a woman. She died early Monday in a private hospital,? a senior state health official told IANS.

At least three patients in Bhubaneswar Sunday tested positive for swine flu, taking the total number of people infected by the virus since July to 62.

?Nineteen of them are undergoing treatment in various hospitals. The condition of all patients is stable,? the official said.

Four more swine flu deaths in Orissa, toll 14

Bhubaneswar, Aug 24 (IANS) Orissa Tuesday confirmed four more deaths due to swine flu, taking the total deaths due to the H1N1 virus in the state since July to 14.
?All the four were women,? an official of the state health control room told IANS.

While two deaths were reported from Bhubaneswar, the other two were in Cuttack.

?As of today (Tuesday), throat swabs of 186 people have been tested since July. Of them 65 were found positive. The death toll stands at 14,? the official added.

At least 13 patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals and their condition is stated to be stable, he said.

One more swine flu case in Orissa


One more person tested positive for swine flu in Orissa Friday taking the total of people infected in the state to 74 since July, an official said.

The latest case was reported from Bhubaneswar, Bikash Patnaik, joint director of the state health department told IANS, adding that throat swabs of two other people which were sent for test Friday were negative.

There has been no fresh report of any death due to the H1N1 virus which has already killed 16 people so far in the state since July. At present about nine people are undergoing treatment in various private and government hospitals, Patnaik said.

Swine flu Death toll in Orissa rises to 17

Report by Orissa Diary correspondent; Cuttack: The death toll of Swine flu death in the state rises to 17. A five-year-old girl died of Swine Flu in Cuttack .

According to reports, the girl of Angul district was first admitted in Cuttack Sishu Bhawan and was then shifted to S.C.B Medical College and Hospital on Thursday. She died on Saturday morning.

The swab samples of the girl sent to the Regional Medical Research Center (RMRC) in Bhubaneswar yesterday tested positive today.

BHUBABEWSWAR: Two women died of swine flu in Orissa, taking the total number of deaths due to the influenza to 19 in the state since July, an official said Monday.

The women died Sunday at the Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital in Burla town of Sambalpur district, about 350 km from here, an official of the state health control room said.

The number of people infected by the H1N1 virus went up to 79 in Orissa after four more people tested positive for the disease Sunday. Two cases each were reported from Burla and Bhubaneswar, he said.

9 Chinese employees of Vedant admitted with suspected swine flu

Sambalpur, Aug 30 : Nine employees of Vedant's Jharsuguda unit, all of them Chinese, were admitted to VSS Medical College and Hospital at Burla with symptoms of swine flu.

VSS Medical College and Hospital Superintendent Dr G S Dash said all the exposed parts of the nine Chinese employees had become reddish with the symptoms of swine flu as well as Dengue and Chickungunya.

He said the hospital had been arranging swab test at the earliest so that if confirmed, necessary treatment would be taken up on a war footing.

The Medical College authority has requested the collectors of the Sambalpur and Jharsuguda to sent an interpreter who could solve the language problem between the patient and the doctor.

The Chinese citizens working with Vedant at its Jharsuguda plant reported in batches for different works.

The VSS Medical College authority was also finding it difficult to accommodate all the patients coming for treatment for suspected swine flu.

Initially, the hospital made arrangements for 15 beds which were already occupied, forcing the authority to use the trauma care unit to admit other suspected Swine flu cases.

Incidentally, two women under treatment at the VSS Medical College and Hospital died of the H1N1 virus yesterday, taking the total casualty in the swine flu to 19 during the past one month.

Chinese national down with swine flu in Orissa

A Chinese national is among five more people infected with swine flu in Orissa, taking the total number of victims in the state in the last two months to 87, an official said Wednesday.

The 25-year-old foreigner works at a private factory in Jharsuguda, about 374 km from here. He tested positive late Tuesday, an official of the state health control room told IANS.

One person in Bhubaneswar, one in Ispat General Hospital at steel city of Rourkela and two people in Veer Surendra Sai Medical College and Hospital at Burla in Sambalpur district also tested positive.

No fresh deaths due to swine flu have been reported from across Orissa, the official said.

The disease has killed 19 people in the state since the beginning of July, he said, adding that 14 people are currently undergoing treatment in various hospitals.

Girl tests positive for H1N1, eight others quarantined Rourkela, Sept 2 (PTI) A two and half year-old girl of Tikilipada village in Orissa''s Sundargarh district tested positive for swine flu positive, while eight other have been quarantined at home, official sources said.The girl, was admitted to the Ispat General Hospital here on Tuesday, was suspected to have contacted the virus from her aunt who died of H1N1 at VSS Medical College Hospital recently, they said.Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Sundargarh B K Kindo said the girl was recovering.Eight others of Bargaon block have been quarantined at home after they showed symptoms of the flu.

Report by Orissa Diary correspondent; Burla: Nine Chinese admitted in the VSS Medical College and Hospital suspecting suffering from Swine Flu absconded from the Medical.

As per the information 9 Chinese working in an Industry at Jharsuguda were admitted in the VSS Medical College and Hospital suspecting suffering from Swine Flu on 30th August. Latter 5 more Chinese were admitted suspecting suffering from Swine Flu.

From the Swab test it was understood that one of them suffering from Swine Flu and other two were suffering from Dengue. Five of them referred to Bhubaneswar for treatment. But they have been absconded from the hospital.

Angul: The swine flu toll in Angul rose to five on Wednesday with the district health administration confirming the death of a 5-year-girl child due to the H1N1 virus. Girl child was admitted on to a private, with flu-like symptoms. As per official report 5 people suffering from H1N1 virus including the girl child. Others are now recovering.

On Monday one person from Balaram prasad village was admitted to Capital Hospital Bhubaneswar with flu-like symptoms. After that information ADMO (Public health) reached at that village with his team and distribute Tami flue tablets to the neighbors for contact doses. After above incident it is cleared that H1N1 is spreading in Angul district.

One meeting was arranged last month on presides by district magistrate about this matter and discussed how to control those diseases. It was also decided that, any public gathering entertainment programme will not allow, special supervision on school students, parents should not sent their child to school who are suffering from cold, cough etc.

Among 4 viruses attracted people are working in out side Orissa. Now many public gathering entertainment programme are running in Angul area. So people are demanding administration should stress impotence to control this disease.

Swineflu toll in Orissa rises to 22

The death toll in Orissa due to swineflu rose to 22 today with three more persons, including two children, succumbing to the virus-borne disease in different hospitals here, official sources said.

The victims are an elderly woman from Angul, a four year old girl from Jajpur and a one-year-old boy from a village on the outskirts of this city, the sources said.

All the three victims are being treated at different private hospitals here.

Of the total swab tests conducted so far, 87 have been found to be positive to H1N1 virus. Seven more samples have been sent for swab test today, the sources said.

Meanwhile, in a bid to prevent panic among the people due to swineflu, the state government has already launched an awareness campaign about the disease through advertisements in newspapers and television channels.

Steps have been taken to ensure adequate supply of Tamiflu medicine for treatment of the disease as well as vaccines as preventive measure against the influenza in the state, the sources added.

Rajasthan?s H1N1 Death Toll Rises To 52

The total number of fatalities owing to deadly H1N1 flu in the state of Rajasthan has gone up to 52.

As per reports, three more people died of swine flu in Ajmer and Udaipur on Friday.

Regardless of all attempts by the administration, the illness kept on spreading across Rajasthan and claim more lives.

The flu came forth as a major risk to preggies' as well as kids in the state. Out of the two casualties reported in Udaipur, one was a pregnant lady.

On Friday, 43 new cases of swine flu were reported across Rajasthan, which takes the total figure of positive cases to 864.

The government of Rajasthan has rolled out different awareness campaigns, but they failed to bring any positive results up till now.

Different Indian states, comprising Orissa, Kerala, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat are still reeling under Swine Flu epidemic.

One more death due to H1N1 flu in the state of Orissa (on Sep 17) has taken the death toll to 24.

Swine flu deals a blow to flourishing piggeries in Orissa

Though not a single case of swine flu infection was detected in Paradip area, the administration went overdrive to stop their source of livelihood, rued several pig farmers who were seriously thinking of switching over to some other source of income.Many pig farmers were encountering a grim situation.In rural areas, pig farmers were being subjected to harrowing ordeal. Fearing that pigs were the carriers of flu, the villagers were forcing the farmers to dispose off the animals."We were forced to direct the pig farmers to shift their bases from Paradip Municipality area", said the Executive officer, Paradip Municipality.It all started when piglets began dying in July.Rumour spread thick and fast that death was due to swine flu infection. It was believed that the pigs might turn out to be potential carriers of the deadly swine flu virus. But the fear was misplaced. The animals died of other veterinary diseases. The pigs were diagnosed to have died of pneumonia, Girish Chandra Sar, a senior official of state veterinary and animal husbandry department, said. "Our department is promoting pig farming. Its a commercially viable occupation. More and more people, mainly unemployed youths should take up this profit-making farming," said another veterinary official.
