Tuberculosis discovered at UNBSJ

Public health will start testing students on Friday

Hundreds of students at the University of New Brunswick's Saint John campus will be tested for tuberculosis after an active case was discovered in a student.

Public health officials are investigating.

The entire student body was notified about the case on Monday afternoon in an email from Robert MacKinnon, the university's vice-president.

Only people who are in relatively close contact with the case have the potential to be infected, according to public health officials.

Although the infected student's information cannot be released for privacy reasons, public health services is working closely with the university to identify the close contacts of the student to ensure the case is isolated.

People in the student services office at UNBSJ are in the process of contacting between 250 and 300 students at the university, believed to share a class with the affected student.

SAINT JOHN - Tuberculosis testing by public health officials on hundreds of University of New Brunswick students in Saint John is expected to continue until Thursday this week, according to school officials.

Jennifer Campbell, a spokeswoman for the university, said the public health agency ordered the testing of between 250 and 300 students after an active case of the airborne bacteria was discovered in a single student last week.
