Yes, keep us posted. There is little doubt that H5N1 is already in Turkey. It is simply a mattor of who will report what and when.

Poultry Deaths in Turkey Raise H5N1 Survellance Concerns

Recombinomics Commentary
December 5, 2006

15 chickens died in the past week in the village of Firindere in Tokat. Villagers, who suspected BF, informed of the situation to the Municipality Agriculture department. Village mukhtar Rahmi Turgut stated that their village was not effected by BF in the past years, and that they are expecting the arrivals of the officials to make the necessary tests. Villagers, who were afraid that their chickens would be culled, did not want to inform the authorities.

The above translation describes a suspect H5N1 outbreak in Turkey. This report is similar to reports from adjacent Azerbaijan. Although western Turkey had confirmed H5N1 in October, 2005, large wild bird outbreaks were denied at this time last year.

However, Turkey subsequently acknowledge that there were H5N1 outbreaks in eastern Turkey in December, 2005 and Egypt recently released the Qinghai H5N1 sequence from a teal which was also isolated in December, 2005. Although Azerbaijan did not acknowledged outbreaks prior to February, 2006, there were several human cluster in Azerbaijan as well as massive die offs of birds in February that were H5N1 positive.

The reports of suspect H5N1 cases in Turkey are cause for concern, as is the lack of H5N1 reports from countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Zkurmas:

Are people in Turkey keeping their flocks "under cover"?

What is being done, as individuals or agencies, to prevent a repeat of last year's events?

Thanks, z!

D*mn. I thought people would've learned better from last time 'round. :(

No, T, that's not right--it's exactly the opposite. It's a clear pattern I've noticed. If an area has had a bird flu outbreak in the past--that has affected tourism, poultry, etc., that area, which includes both the villagers and the authorities, is far more likely to cover up and deny any new bird flu outbreaks, even if they result in people dying, etc. In fact, they will be willing to deny that anything's wrong at all costs and beyond any reason. The ultimate consequences of such behavior may very well be devastating.

yep - that's the one..

As for the other posts, I don't know whether people are hiding their flocks - it seems possible, and natural on their parts. Although people were compensated for their culled livestock last year, the impact of losing them both economically and from a traditional point of view made them very upset.

However, the distinction I see from last year, are frequent warnings on national TV channels, and newspapers as well as pamphlets, brochures and posters plus educational information given in schools, is that the government, and especially the Protection and Control directorate has their hands on the issue..

Even in areas like Istanbul, where I live, and in schools with children who have no contact with any animals save for their goldfish, such as my son who started first grade this year, the educational videos and classes are included in the curriculum.

So, we'll hope that if there are any outbreaks, not only we will know about it, but also will get through it with no casualties.

Regards to all, and will keep you posted if anything new comes up, z.

These are reader's comments below (on the website) I think their point of view is actually more dangerous and shows the ignorant human nature

First comment says : "We cull the animals and tip of the balance of nature, when we kill the chickens we get Crimean Congo fever carrier fleas (We had over 30 cases this summer - Oric) .. So if one person turns out to be a HIV carrier should we kill all humans .."

Second comment : "Turkey was not the only country with H5N1 last year but because it got so much publicity we lost 4 Billion USD (tourism) revenues .. Why do we report these incidents anyway ? NO ONE (reffering to Greece, Bulgaria, Russia, Syria) DOES ANYWAY"

I doubt that ... H5N1 is not proven to be persistently (all year round) carried in local bird fauna like Thailand or Indonesia, but we are located under major migration paths so especially around this time of the year we get bombarded with virus loaded droppings.

I was able to find a free Turkish->English->Turkish Translation Application. The text from the first article came out garbled, I think it has something to do with the font translation via copy/paste...but might be useful for future news stories and/or other news sources.
