Turkey confirms first case of H1N1 flu: news agency

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish health authorities have confirmed the country's first case of swine flu in a traveler from the United States, the state-run Anatolian news agency said on Saturday.

The male traveler flew from the United States via Amsterdam and was found to be suffering from the H1N1 virus after arriving at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport en route to Iraq, the agency quoted the Health Ministry as saying.

A statement from the Health Ministry was expected at 3 a.m. EST, it said.

Turkey reported the country's first case of swine flu Saturday, saying the virus was detected in a man who had travelled to Istanbul from the US.
Health Minister Recep Akdag said the man, a US citizen, had arrived in Istanbul via Amsterdam on Thursday.
Thermal cameras installed at Istanbul airport detected the man had high fever and he was put under observation at Istanbul's Haseki hospital, Akdag said. A lab later detected the H1N1 virus, the formal name for swine flu.
Five other members of his family have been placed in isolation, and health authorities were contacting other passengers on the flight, the minister said. There were about 160 passengers on the plane, Akdag said.
"The man's condition, in general, is good, and he has been placed in isolation along with his family," Akdag said. "We obtained the passenger list and those on the same plane with him are being closely monitored."
Private NTV television said the man was an Iraqi-American and was planning to travel to Iraq.

Just announced on the news: health minister urges everyone who was on flight KLM 1613 flight from Amsterdam, or those who came in contact from anyone on the flight to call 112 (like 911 in the US). They mean those who were not reached thru the flight manifest, I guess, and this means there are some probable cases shopping for rugs in the grand bazaar as I type.

Conflicting reports - some say that H1N1 was also detected in the + patient's mother, others say that she is a possible case.

Impeccable move, but what to do about the hundreds of hub transiting passengers who were breathing the same air, and tauching the same stairways as these infected flight passengers?

And what to do with the silent asymptomatic, infectious plain passengers, who normaly tresspassing the thermal sensors, and later spreads the disease?

The above questions are obviously pertinent to all countries plain hubs.

Only an entering quarantine of infected area passengers (as the Chinese try, but several already escaped out prior) can do a better slowing of imported cases.

The ones already at a country soil are unfortunately subjected only to other (unexistant) terranian quarantines ...

3 more hospitalized with swine flu suspicion. One was a Turkish national returning from the pilgrimage to Mekka/Hac and went to the hospital with high fever and blood pressure. No info on the other two patients.

Also, the two Iraqi/Americans from KLM flight 1613 were + for swine. Rest of the family tested negative. 110 passengers and all crew were reached and none showed signs of disease (zkurmus' note: i was worried about whether anyone was considering the incubation period but see summary translation of article from CNNTurk). Only 8 tourists were unaccounted for, their embassies notified of the situation.

More or less the same info with the additions: 8 people unreached were citizens of the US, Canada and France. All the rest of the passengers are having daily monitoring to check for any signs.

The 65 year old woman with swine flu suspicion was hospitalized the day she returned from Saudi Arabia with high fever. She went to the Memorial Hospital first, but was moved to the quarantine ward at Haseki Hospital's infectious disease ward awaiting test results.

heard on the radio today while driving that two children aged 2 and 4 from the KLM flight were under observation in Eskişehir with swine flu suspicion. They must be two of the people mentioned in these articles, which basically say that 6 people were being watched for swine flu symptoms, two results arrived -, two were beinged watched isolated at home and two were in isolation wards in the hospital awaiting test results.

5 people hospitalized with swine flu suspicion. A Spanish national and her 11 month old baby released after tests came back - in Ankara, 78 year old male who arrived from Germany 10 days ago and 30 year old female hospitalized in İstanbul, awaiting test results. A scientist in Adana, who worked closely with a Polish colleague hospitalized as well with high fever, test results to arrive tomorrow.
