Sudden death of 3 children shocks family, community
Three siblings, Hedal Ece (7), Sait Ece (5) and İzzet Ece (1), died on Friday in the southeastern city of Şanlıurfa after two of them were diagnosed with food poisoning; however, doctors are now examining blood samples to see if the children had swine flu.

Hedal along with her brother, Sait, were brought to the hospital by their father, Abd?rrezzak Ece, with high fevers and nausea on Thursday. Doctors diagnosed them with food poisoning and prescribed medication. After some time, the two children were sent back home. The parents found Hedal and Sait?s dead bodies on Friday morning. Police seized the medication given to the children as part of an investigation into their deaths. Blood samples taken from the children were sent to the Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) to see if the children had the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as swine flu.
After the parents, Abd?lrezak and Zeliha Ece, buried their two children, İzzet Ece was then brought to Şanlıurfa Children?s Hospital on Friday night since he had a high fever similar to his deceased siblings? symptoms. İzzet Ece died on Sunday after being treated in the intensive care unit. The child?s body was brought to the morgue of the Şanlıurfa Teaching and Research Hospital for autopsy. Speaking to the Anatolia news agency, the father, Abd?lrezak Ece, complained that doctors have not explained why his children died. ?I want doctors to state the cause of my children?s deaths to prevent more children from dying,? he added. Uff, this is a shocking news!!
It isn't looking like food poisoning at all. It could be swine or meningitis, more on the viral/bacterial side.

H1N1 is not possible. No mention of other mild cases. Only a small handful (maybe 5 worldwide) of families have reported two deaths. Three would be just about impossible.

Meningitis is possible, as is food poisoning (or any other accidental poisoning, or really many other illnesses). Fever and nausea is a very general description. Let us not forget that, pandemic aside, accidental poisoning is one of the leading causes of deaths of children worldwide.

I wouldn't rule anything out until the test results are in. A recent case from Punjab : A mother and adult son died within 24 hours of each other. See posts 9,11 in this thread:

As to the two above posts: A mother and son is two fatalities. We have had a few of those. But three is another story. If the fatality rate of this virus is x, where x is considered small, then the chance of two deaths in a given family is on the order of x^2, and the chance of three is on the order of x^3.

But this is Turkey. H5N1 is definitely possible, as is CCHF, as well as many more common conditions. I'm not sure we're going to hear any more on this at all though.

:tiphat: Of course I don't know if it was A/H1N1, but the death of the third child (the one's 1yr-old) was two days after. Something I could expect from parents/family would have been checking all food after the death of their two sons.

We can't exclude anything about the flu. Flu is Hydra and all we need is to find proper head to kill us. Every day it doesn't kill us is a given day to fight it.

Some kind of poisoning is definitely possible, but my diagnosis of choice here is still bacterial meningitis. The symptoms are correct, untreated it could cause three deaths in a family, and they haven't tested for it yet. And while the third death was four days later, his onset appears to have been only about 12 hours behind the first two, so a simultaneous exposure is still possible.

But H1N1 has been ruled out (and H5N1 likely also ruled out).
