US-Iraqi family treated in Turkey for swine flu continues on to Iraq
Turkey identified its first two cases of swine flu in a family traveling to Iraq from the United States through thermal cameras at İstanbul Atat?rk Airport.
Two members of a US-Iraqi family flying to Iraq through Turkey who had been quarantined with swine flu left Turkey yesterday with the rest of their family on their way to Iraq through the southeastern province of Diyarbakır.
The family was brought to İstanbul Atat?rk Airport on Thursday evening through the VIP entrance. They hid their faces with towels to avoid scrutiny by the press. The family flew to Diyarbakır on a Turkish Airlines (THY) flight and then traveled to the Habur border crossing between Turkey and Iraq. The family was reportedly accompanied by officials from the US Consulate General in Adana. They traveled to Iraq by land yesterday.
Two members of the family who had contracted swine flu were released Thursday from İstanbul's Haseki Teaching and Research Hospital, where they had been receiving treatment.
The Health Ministry stressed then in a written statement that the patients were released from the hospital because their treatment had been completed.
Last week, Turkey identified its first two swine flu cases in a family traveling to Iraq from the United States. Thermal cameras at İstanbul Atat?rk Airport detected that the two of the family members had a high fever. They were put under observation at the Haseki hospital along with four other family members. The Health Ministry statement also said that after it was determined that the other four members of the family had not contracted the virus, they had been released from the hospital.
US Embassy thanks Turkey for swine flu response
The US Embassy in Ankara has voiced appreciation for the cooperation of Turkish officials and medical personnel in the case of the US citizens exposed to swine flu.
?The US Embassy wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the competence, cooperation and compassion of the many Turkish officials and medical personnel who intervened in the recent case of American citizens and relatives exposed to the H1N1 virus. Thanks to these officials and personnel, the infected individuals were diagnosed and treated, and the entire party was assisted in its onward travel,? the embassy said in a written statement released yesterday.
Spanish mother, child referred to hospital over suspected swine flu
A Spanish mother and her child were yesterday referred to a hospital in the Turkish capital of Ankara, suspected of being infected with the swine flu virus.
The 11-month-old child was reportedly brought to the Sami Ulus Children's Hospital to determine whether he had contracted the influenza A (H1N1) virus. The mother, whose identity is not yet known, was taken to Ankara Research and Teaching Hospital, where blood samples were taken and sent to the Refik Saydam Hıfzısıhha Center (RSHM). She was subsequently taken to the Sami Ulus facility.
Hospital officials have stated that the baby has been taken to a special isolation room and that examinations will be conducted to determine whether or not the baby is carrying the virus. It was further reported that other patients waiting at emergency services in the hospital were taken to other departments.
Patients and visitors are not allowed in or out of the hospital for the time being, and hospital security staff and police patrolling the hospital have been wearing masks since the Spanish family was brought in. İstanbul Today's Zaman with wires
