For states having reported pediatric deaths, here are the percentages of deaths represented by pediatric deaths.

The percentage has stayed between 13% and 15%. The variation by state is quite large. I'm sure population demographics has a lot to do with the variations; however, I wonder if there is any correlation between states that aggressively closed schools and lower pediatric death rates?

I was just thinking that the number of pediatric fatalities had been very high these past few days so I graphed it using your numbers with Oct 2 as the start point.

Kids are dying at the rate of four every day that we know about. On Oct 17, we have recorded 175 fatalities. The CDC has estimated 540, three times our total. Can we assume then that this disease is taking twelve children each day?

Thanks for the chart Ro. I posted the deaths per month on the previous post, but then it jumped to page 3. The numbers have been doubling every month since July.

Here's the list again.

April - 1
May - 6
June - 21
July - 11
August - 20
September - 53
October - 105
November - 91 (through 11/18)

The rate has steadily increased from <2 per day in September to 5 per day so far in November. If the CDC's estimate is at all accurate, and I fear it is, then, yes, we are losing well over 10 children a day.

For some reason, LA County reduced the total pediatric deaths for the season from 11 (Week 44) to 7 (Week 45); therefore, the total for California was reduced from 47 to 44.

The numbers for Alabama and Illinois include one 18-yo each. The rate of pediatric deaths slowed significantly in the past week. Thank God.

I hate to bring this thread back up, but we've seen 7 pediatric deaths reported by the CDC in the U.S. since Week 49, with 5 occurring in the past two weeks. There have been three additional deaths reported in the media in recent weeks and yet the 2009 Pandemic H1N1 has not even been the dominant virus. In fact, it seems that even the seasonal strains are causing more serious cases and more deaths, in those between the ages of 5 and 59, than in a typical year.

I'll only post numbers by state if things get serious, which I pray will not happen.

In addition to the CDC's official tally of 19 pediatric deaths, I have an additional 13 deaths for a total of 31 for the season. This does not include reports from several large states (CA, IL, TX, MS, OH), which have not provided updates for Week 4.

The total number of pediatric flu deaths in the U.S. since the pandemic began is 459. There were 67 pediatric deaths prior to September 1, 2009, when the CDC declared the end of the 2008/09 season.

These numbers exceed the CDC's counts; however, they were carefully researched by FluTrackers.com members and include those that were not laboratory confirmed. Even the CDC acknowledged that the actual numbers were probably much higher. :(

I'm very concerned because we already have more pediatric deaths than in an average season and the vast majority of those identified to date died from seasonal flu. So, we have not yet started to see the impacts of a potentially mutated pH1N1. Given that pediatric deaths are a lagging indicator and given that there is much less attention being given to the flu this year in the media, we probably won't know the severity until well after the peak (possibly well into March).

Sadly, we are seeing more pediatric deaths where pH1N1 is increasing. Here is a list of the states with pediatric deaths during the 2010-11 season. In addition to the CDC data, I have data from state and county health departments that haven't made it to the CDC and a few others from media reports. Based on population, NC and PA are of particular concern.

Last week the CDC reported 14 pediatric deaths. They were about evenly distributed among the three strains circulating; however, there is a lag of several weeks by the time the CDC reports a death. Our count is at least 20 higher than the CDC, based both on County or State confirmed pediatric deaths as well as media reports. The majority of recent deaths have been from pH1N1. Here are the latest numbers. I hate this part of the work, but we must make people aware of the danger to children. :(
