Mbale, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Veterinary authorities in Manafwa district have imposed a temporal quarantine following the outbreak of anthrax in Bududa district.
One person has since died and thirteen others hospitalized after eating meat of dead animals suspected to have died of anthrax. Eighteen animals have also been confirmed dead in Bumabara village, in Bunatsami sub-county.
Anthrax is a zoonotic disease transmissible from animals to human. Humans can avoid disease by not eating animals that die suddenly. Animals dying from anthrax have blood oozing from all body openings and thus must be buried without opening.
Bududa District Production officer Dr Felix Odong says that tests carried out by the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) on Thursday confirmed the disease.

An anthrax outbreak has been confirmed in Buduba District, Uganda. Eight suspected human cases were reported and clinically evaluated in four villages. Of these, seven were sampled and one died on 16 May without being sampled. The date of onset of symptoms was between 2 and 12 May 2022. The district performed a preliminary test using Gram stain which was positive for Bacillus anthracis.

An anthrax outbreak has been confirmed in Bududa District, Uganda, in early May 2022. As of 14 December, a total of 51 suspected cases have been reported including two deaths (CFR 4%). Two Districts have so far reported human cases: Kween (31 cases and one death) and Bududa (20 cases and one death). Eleven samples have been collected in Bududa, five of which tested positive for anthrax. No new suspected cases have been reported in Kween and the last suspected case from Bududa was admitted on 1 August 2022. Of note, 65 animals have suddenly died in Bududa (40), Namisindwa (9), Manafwa (8), Kween (6) & Mbale City (2) Districts. However, no new sudden animal death has been reported. Around 10 000 doses of vaccines have been received and 1196 animals have been vaccinated in Bududa District over the past week, bringing the total to 3716.
