Cases of mumps have rocketed in the Highlands with more than 100 people now infected by the outbreak.

Most of those who have fallen ill are living in the Oban area and many are teenagers or people in their early-20s.

Doctors notified health officials of an extra 30 patients with the condition in one week alone.

For most people, mumps is a relatively mild illness, but complications include encephalitis when the virus causes inflammation of the brain...

PEOPLE in Evesham aged between 20 and 30-years-old have been urged to get the MMR vaccine following an increase in cases of mumps.

The Health Protection Agency issued the warning on Tuesday as health officials were made aware 40 possible cases in Worcestershire in December and January. The county’s monthly average is seven cases.

Most of the reported instances occurred in young men and women in their 20s who had not been fully immunised with both doses of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination...

YOUNG men and women are being urged to get vital injections following a dramatic increase in mumps in the Vale over the last few weeks.
About 40 suspected cases of the illness were reported in and around Evesham during December and January - almost six times the number reported in the whole of Worcestershire on average each month.
Health chiefs said 12 of the cases had been confirmed since the end of 2010 compared to just six confirmed between April and October last year...

Immunity fears after probe into Oban mumps outbreak

AN INVESTIGATION into a mumps outbreak at Oban has revealed ?concerning? figures indicating some waning local immunity to the Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

The outbreak mainly affected young people in their teens and 20s.

It is thought to have spread initially through social mixing over the Christmas and New Year period when local young people were visiting their families.

The investigation shows that of the 140 cases recorded during the outbreak between December and February, 44% had received two doses of MMR, 28% had received one dose and 25% had not been immunised with MMR.

The figures will be discussed at the NHS Highland Board meeting in Inverness next Tuesday...

CONCERNED mums of Burrelton Primary School children face an anxious wait for test results after school-gate rumours of a potential mumps outbreak emerged after the Easter holiday.

Returning their children to school after the bank holiday weekend, one parent, whose child had been struck by a mystery virus, heard that three other children in the same class had fallen ill with similar symptoms...

Students across north-west England have been advised to check their vaccination records after outbreaks of mumps at two universities.

The disease has affected 47 students at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and 35 at the University of Manchester since February.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised students to ask their GPs if they have had the full MMR vaccine.

It said some may have missed out on their second protective dose of MMR.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) North West is advising students throughout the region to check their MMR vaccine status following outbreaks of mumps in UCLan (University of Central Lancashire) in Preston and The University of Manchester.

Forty-seven UCLan students have been confirmed with mumps since the beginning of February. Most are first and second year students, but some third year students have also been affected. Thirty-five cases have been confirmed in The University of Manchester this year....

Students at Preston’s university have been left stricken by a debilitating illness at the start of the exam season.

Latest figures for the north west show that nearly half of the cases of mumps reported so far this year were among students at the University of Central Lancashire...

...Ninety cases of mumps were confirmed by laboratory testing in the North West in the first 14 weeks of 2011, including the 47 cases in UCLan...

A mumps outbreak hitting students at Preston?s university has spiralled beyond levels last seen two years ago.

There are now 60 confirmed cases at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan)...

...The recent mumps outbreak is now larger than the last outbreak in 2009 when there were 39 cases of mumps at the University of Central Lancashire, 12 of which were confirmed by tests...

An outbreak of mumps at Kingston University has prompted a warning for unvaccinated students to get jabs.

So far there have been three confirmed and two suspected cases reported at the university.

All are thought to be unconnected and not people from the same lectures.

The university is working closely with the Health Protection Agency?s south-west London unit to ensure that those at risk of infection are immunised with two preventative doses of the MMR jab...

CASES of mumps are on the rise in Cumbria.

Young adults are being reminded to check they have received both doses of vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella.

So far this year, 14 cases of mumps have been confirmed across Cumbria, already an increase on the 10 recorded for the whole of last year. Health bosses are keen to prevent a large outbreak similar to that of 2009, when 97 cases were recorded...
