Rise in UK measles cases causing concern
Published 6 hours ago
By James Gallagher

A "very concerning" rise in the number of people catching meals in the UK has been reported by health officials.

The virus spreads incredibly easily and a fall in vaccination rates is leaving more children vulnerable to infection.

There were 54 cases of meals in the whole of last year. However, there have already been 49 in the first four months of 2023.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is encouraging parents to ensure their children's vaccinations are up to date.

Number of cases of measles in Wales rises
Cases have doubled in Wales and England compared to the same period last year

Parts of Wales and England are seeing a surge in measles cases, according to the latest data. There were 451 suspected infections between July and October 22 – more than double the 204 cases seen during the same period in 2022.

Separate figures show that MMR vaccination is at a 12-year low leaving experts fearing there could be more outbreaks of the disease. Measles is contagious but is easily preventable with vaccination, which comes in two doses. Children in the UK can have a first dose of the MMR vaccine on or after their first birthday and the second dose by the time they are three and a half years old.

The Notification of Infectious Diseases report (NOIDS), which tracks suspected infectious disease cases in England and Wales, showed there were 27 cases of measles in the week ending October 22. Infection rates have been consistently high, jumping to 33 during the week ending October 8, the data revealed.

London is the hardest hit with seven positive tests with Ealing reporting the most infections followed by Lewisham, Brent, Hillingdon, and Hounslow. Four positive tests came from Wales with one from Cardiff and the others from the Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda, and Torfaen. There were no recorded cases in the southwest of England...
