More than 500 health officials have been vaccinated against smallpox to protect against a possible biological terrorist attack, at the Olympic Games in London this year. The decision, which reveals the high level of concern of the British government with regard to extremists during the competition, the budget increased safety measures over 1.54 billion dollars.
The Government also garnered sufficient supplies of smallpox vaccine to "mount a vaccination program throughout the United Kingdom" in the event that triggers a release of the disease officially eradicated in 1980.
A report by the Interior Ministry in January last year warned that the Games venues and public transportation would be "attractive targets" for terrorists to launch attacks, such as the spread of smallpox. The deadly disease could be spread by aerosol and is highly contagious.
The medical staff includes 147 physicians vaccinated, 164 nurses, 100 paramedics and 32 scientists, divided into teams to cope with a possible extreme events. Each team consists of five health professionals, including a nurse and a pediatrician. All are specially trained to diagnose and treat the virus.
Although the teams were not established specifically for the Olympics, the government has developed plans to ensure that security professionals will be available during the period of dispute in July and August.
The concern to disease has been publicly exposed after a former minister criticized conservative "number pathetic" emergency workers vaccinated against smallpox and Anthrax.
"A wide range of possible incidents or attacks has been considered by the government. After this process, health departments in the UK have established an adequate supply of vaccines, medical countermeasures and specialized equipment designed to protect and treat people" said Interior Minister Lord Henley.
