Tests for the virus are currently only being carried out on hospital patients, NHS staff and their families - although plans have been announced to roll out testing to other workers, including police, fire and prison staff.

A total of 18,100 patients have died in hospital after testing positive for coronavirus in the UK as of 5pm on Tuesday, April 21 the Department of Health said.

The total number is up by 763 from 17,337 the day before.

NHS England has announced 665 new deaths of people who tested positive for Covid-19.

While, Public Health Wales said a further 15 people have died after testing positive for coronavirus in Wales, bringing the total number of deaths there to 624.

Figures have been released on the most recent toll across the UK.

As of 9am today, 559,935 tests have concluded.

There were 22,814 tests yesterday.

In total, 411,192 people have been tested, of which 133,495 have tested positive.

As of 5pm yesterday, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 18,100 have died.

CORONAVIRUS hospital deaths in the UK are close to surpassing Spain's death toll despite social distancing efforts slowing the spread of the disease

The UK may soon surpass Spain in coronavirus deaths according to a graph highlighted during the Sunday night Government coronavirus briefing. Chief medical director Professor Stephen Powis said that there was evidence to suggest that the UK's social distancing measures had slowed down the spread of COVID-19. However, he highlighted that the death toll in the UK would not suddenly fall and there was a lag in collecting data.

The number of people who have died in hospitals from coronavirus across the UK has risen by 601.

It takes the overall total to 22,370 as the daily total drops once again.

England reported 445 new deaths, Scotland had 83 and Wales reported 73, taking Britain's overall total to 22,370.

Later, the Department of Health will announce an official death toll includes fatalities in care and nursing homes for the first time.
