THE UK's coronavirus death toll increased again today by 331 in hospitals in England - taking the numbers of fatalities up to 29,758.

The UK is now among one of the worst in the world as the number of deaths creeps closer to 30,000.

1,334,770 people have been tested, of which 219,183 tested positive.

As of 5pm on 9 May, of those tested positive for coronavirus in the UK, 31,855 have died. This new figure includes deaths in all settings, not just in hospitals. The equivalent figure under the old measure would have been 26,568.

A total of 35,044 people in England and Wales died from coronavirus as of 1 May, according to the Office for National Statistics, though data suggests there has been close to 50,000 excess deaths.

In the first five weeks of the outbreak, 108,345 deaths were registered by the ONS for the two countries - which is 46,494 more than the five-year average over the same period.

The virus was linked to three quarters of the deaths and the ONS said it was now investigating the number of non-Covid-19 deaths.

Adding the latest figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland and more up to date fatalities announced daily by the government that occurred in NHS settings, the total official UK death toll now stands at 40,011.

Britain's coronavirus death toll continued its downward trend today after officials announced 134 more victims, taking the official number of fatalities closer to the 35,000-mark.

Department of Health chiefs have yet to reveal the final toll, which is likely to be higher. The preliminary tally is calculated by adding up the individual counts of each of the home nations.

NHS England today recorded 122 more deaths in hospitals. Elsewhere in the UK, Scotland announced only two more deaths, while Wales had four and Northern Ireland six across all settings

All non-essential retailers will be able to reopen in England from 15 June, Boris Johnson has announced, as part of plans to further ease the lockdown.

However, the move is "contingent on progress in the fight against coronavirus", and retailers will have to adhere to new guidelines to protect shoppers and workers, the PM added.

Outdoor markets and car showrooms will be able to reopen from 1 June.

It comes as the number of coronavirus deaths in the UK rose by 121 to 36,914.
