Meningitis kills Newbiggin boy Marshall Watkinson in 24 hours

GRIEVING mum Gemma Eastlake today revealed how a deadly strand of meningitis killed her son in less than 24 hours.
Marshall Watkinson died in hospital just 24 hours after he was struck down with a vomiting bug on Wednesday night.
But the following morning when his mother, Gemma Eastlake, took his younger brother to school the 11-year-old’s condition had rapidly deteriorated.
When she returned to their home in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland, his little body was covered in a rash and he was struggling to breath.
Paramedics raced to the 11-year-old’s home and he was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital where medics frantically fought to save his life.
However, after he was transferred to Newcastle’s RVI doctors were unable to save the youngster and he died in the intensive care unit with his parents at his side.

Public health experts meningitis warning to Merseyside parents

PUBLIC health experts are warning parents, teachers and family doctors in Merseyside to be on the alert for symptoms of meningitis and meningococcal septicaemia.
Professor Qutub Syed, Director of the Health Protection Agency North West, said they tended to see more cases of the disease in the winter months, and said it was important everyone knows the symptoms so they can take “urgent action” if a case was suspected. Most cases occur in the under-4s, but anyone can suffer from it.
Symptoms can include a rash, sudden high fever, severe and worsening headache, severe neck stiffness, dislike of bright lights, very cold hands and feet and drowsiness.

A Norfolk family has set up a fund to raise money to help find a cure for meningitis after the death of a 19-year-old student.

Ryan returned to Sheffield Hallam University, where he was studying sport development and coaching, on January 4.
His mother said: “He felt fine on the day he went back. The next day, he went to bed with a headache, but it was nothing to worry about. He was due to attend a lecture the next day, but he died in his sleep.
“The coroner said it was a vicious strain of the illness and there had been no time to save him. There was nothing that could have been done.

A Carlisle couple have spoken of their heartache and grief after their baby son died of meningococcal septicaemia.
Amanda Byers and her partner Karl Mosgrove lost five-month-old Alfie Jay Mosgrove to the deadly bug. Little Alfie was suffering from a strain of the meningococcal infection which is not yet preventable by vaccination.
