If the stats can be believed then Tayside in Scotland now has the highest Influenza Like Illness rate in the UK at 116 per 100,000.

Tayside schools go back next week. English schools not for several more weeks yet.

Yes. It's 116.5 for Tayside to be exact. Been dropping slowly from a peak of about 160 over the last few weeks. Might drop a bit further on this trend next week but it will be really interesting to watch what happens over the subsequent few weeks. Tayisde has been reporting more than double to triple the Scottish average consistently for several weeks now but this is the first week it has reported the highest rate in the UK. English rates have fallen substantially in the last few weeks since their schools closed for the summer.

Further 18% of the swine flu patients ever hospitalised in Scotland are in Tayside yet only 8% of the Scottish population live in the region. It's definitely a hot spot but the question is why?

To try and track this down any further I think we'd need a breakdown of where in Tayside the cases are. It would seem unlikely they are evenly spread so where are the concentrations? For example in the Dundee/Perth urban area or in the more rural areas?

The world's largest Relenza manufacturing facility is in Tayside ( GlaxoSmithKline, Montrose ) as is a lot of other bio-tech - but that had better just be a co-incidence!

I wondered in an earlier posting about the effect of the T in the Park Music Festival (Kinross, Tayside) which took place at the start of July. Could this have boosted figures?

Where are Tayside journalists on this question? D.C. Thomson is based in Dundee and I'm sure they have journalists with kids going back to school next week. You'd think they would be a bit more curious about being apparent guinea pigs for a school return with the apparent highest ili rates in the UK. They have reported the highest rates in Scotland story but not that it's now the highest in the UK (at least not in online editions) and the reporters seem to have shown no inclination to find out if there's any reason.

It's very odd. Tayside isn't the poorest/most deprived area, its not the most crowded area, it's not the richest area, its not anything special at all ! :D

Dundee is less socially deprived than Glasgow for example based on official figures. And much of the rest of rural Tayside is in a better position than the city of Dundee itself. As ming says there appears to be no obvious reason for Tayside to be leading the swine flu table and that's precisely why it's a puzzle - your decades old jibes at Dundee not-withstanding.

Winston Churchill never forgave Dundee for voting him out of his Dundee seat in 1922 when the D.C. Thomson newspapers ran a witch hunt against him (too Liberal they said).

Hog, it's a bit of fun, Dundee is run down, you can't argue against that, but I've already said to you, that I'm just joking, so stop taking it so seriously.

But that's exactly the point. I can argue against that. In fact over the last few years there has been so much new construction in central Dundee (Casinos, hotels, university buildings, luxury accommodation, shopping centres etc) that the skyline is perpetually peppered with cranes. I'm happy to say I was born in Dundee and I know Dundee was once very run down as heavy industry departed so I reserve the right to be touchy about your comments whether you feel them, to be in jest or not.

On BBC Scotland news tonight, swine flu cases down in England but a small rise in Scotland. That's because the schools have been back just over a week here, and the english schools are still off.
