A WELL-KNOWN vicar has been struck down by a mystery illness following a charity mission in Kenya.

The Reverend Alison Gilchrist, vicar of St Hilda's Church in Greatfield, east Hull, was admitted to hospital over fears she had the deadly tropical disease malaria.

But now, doctors have told her it is an unknown bug in her blood and is not believed to have been contracted abroad.

I wonder if they are running antibody tests to see if this is an autoimmune reaction. Sounds like the trip to Kenya lasted 11 days.

The articles also contains the text below. Malaria is not the only tropical disease she could have contracted; trypanosomiasis (African sleeping sickness) seems possible given the symptom below:

Her husband, Robert Gilchrist, 47, said: "They thought it was malaria but it's not. It's a bug in her blood and not a foreign bug. That's all we have been told.

"Her blood pressure is really low and when she gets up, she feels dizzy, so she has to rest.

"She was sleeping for 12 hours a night when she came back, which is not like her."
