Over 90 hospitalized after measles vaccination in east Ukraine

KIEV, May 18 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 92 people, including 87 children, were hospitalized in eastern Ukraine as of early Sunday after measles vaccination, Ukraine's emergencies ministry said.

On May 13, a 17-year-old boy died after measles inoculation in the Donetsk Region. Two days later, over 60 people in eastern Ukraine were hospitalized after vaccination. A total of over 20,000 people in the region received the same vaccine.

Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko said he was concerned over the teenager's death and demanded from the Ukrainian health ministry to take all measures to prevent such instances in the future.

By now, measles immunization has been halted in Ukraine.

Ukraine halts deadly vaccination

The Ukrainian Ministry of Health has called a moratorium on mandatory vaccination against measles and rubella. The President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, has insisted that vaccination is carried out on a voluntary basis only. This comes after more than 100 pupils were taken to hospital, one of whom died after having been injected with a vaccine from India.

Last week Ukraine was shaken by the news of a teenager?s death. Senior pupil Anton Tishchenko died in intensive care in a hospital in the city of Kramatorsk in Donetsk Region after he?d been given the vaccine against measles and rubella (Tresivac ZA 26-X). Later, dozens more teenagers who?d received the same medication were rushed to hospital in Kramatorsk alone. Similar situations were reported in the cities of Donetsk, Kharkov and Kremenchug amongst others.

By Friday night a total of 87 people had been admitted to hospital with the same symptoms: high blood pressure, splitting headache, high temperature and sore throat.

Medical officials urged journalists not to spread ?unverified frightening stories?. They said that the vaccine from the Indian enterprise Serum Institute of India, which had been delivered to Ukraine as humanitarian aid by UNICEF, is not just safe but considered to be ?the best in the world?. They said this vaccine was certificated and registered in Ukraine, but never showed the above mentioned documents to the citizens.

Schoolmates of the deceased Anton Tishchenko say they were told that the vaccination was obligatory and urgent. Therefore many of them did not even have the time to inform their parents about the vaccination.

?We?ll do everything not to lose any more lives,? said Vasily Knyazevich, the head of the Ministry of Health. In turn, Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko has ordered a thorough investigation into the purchasing process of the medication.

Maybe the damage could be related with a non-adequate assured storidge quality during the delivery trip?

Ukrainian Health Official May Face Prison for Controversial Vaccination

[Presenter] The vaccination against measles and rubella launched by the Health Ministry did not cause either almost 100 cases of hospitalization or the death of a young man in Kramatorsk [Donetsk Region], the representatives of the World Health Organization [WHO] and the UNISEF children's fund claimed.

It has been established that the high school student's death was caused by a brain oedema, a heart failure and inadequate treatment. Representatives of the international organizations and Ukrainian ministry are sure that the vaccination campaign should be continued.

[WHO Regional Director for Europe Marc Danzon, in English, overlaid with Ukrainian translation] We have an experience of millions of immunization cases and a substantial database of symptomatology and its consequences. I insist that the described symptoms which the hospitalized boy had do not correspond the side effect symptoms of immunization mentioned in the specification documents.

[Presenter] At the same time, the Prosecutor-General's Office does not think that the vaccination is all right. It filed a criminal case against the former Ukrainian chief sanitary doctor, Mykola Prodanchuk, for abuse of power, when he allowed to import and use an Indian vaccine against measles and rubella without any registration and clinical tests.

Prodanchuk has been detained. He is facing from seven to 10 years in prison.

[The Ukrainian news agency UNIAN quoted at 1157 gmt Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Vasyunyk as saying that Ukraine will not resume the vaccination campaign against measles and rubella until the cause of the student's death in Kramatorsk is identified.]

Health Ministry Sees Need To Resume Vaccination Against Measles And Rubella (18:03, Wednesday, June 4, 2008)

The Ministry of Health has said it is necessary to resume vaccination against measles and rubella that was suspended on May 17.

Deputy Minister of Health Valerii Bidnyi announced this at a press conference.

"The position of the ministry is as follows: vaccination against measles and rubella needs to be resumed as any other vaccination," he said.

He stressed here that the Ukrainian society is not ready for voluntary vaccination, against measles and rubella in particular.

"The society is not ready voluntarily because they need to have an intellect, an understanding of this problem," he said.

At request of the journalists, Bidnyi gave a recommendation to the children of high-ranking officials, to the daughter of Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko in particular, to get vaccinated without being afraid for their lives.

The deputy minister added that the vaccine that was in use in Donetsk region is a good-quality vaccine and meets all necessary norms.

This vaccine has been manufactured by the Indian factory Serum Institute of India in 2007.

A tender was held to select the manufacturer and three companies participated in it, a Swiss, an American and an Indian company.

The American company did not pass the repeat certification with the World Health Organization while the Swiss company could not supply the required amount of vaccine to Ukraine (the offer was 1.5 million doses, the required amount was 8 million doses), so the Indian factory won.

The other deputy minister of health, Volodymyr Yurchenko, said the working commission of the Health Ministry is continuing its investigation of the death of 17-year-old Anton Tischenko in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, but today the final diagnosis is not established yet.

The minister does not think that vaccine caused his death because he was vaccinated at around 11 a.m. on May 13 and died at around 3 a.m. on May 14.

To date, the commission has established that the young man was suffering from obesity and heart failure.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the Ministry of Health suspended vaccination against measles and rubella on May 17.

An eleventh-grade pupil died in Kramatorsk on May 13, one day after he was vaccinated against measles and rubella.

The Ministry of Health has denied the existence of a link between the teenager's death and the vaccination against measles and rubella.

Ninety-two people, including 87 children, were hospitalized in Kramatorsk during the May 15-17 period because their health deteriorated after they had been vaccinated against measles and rubella.
