GENEVA. - The UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities today expressed "deep concern" about the potential sterilization in Peru of people considered "mentally incompetent" without their consent.
The committee today shared their observations and conclusions on the report of Peru in this matter that was discussed last week in Geneva, and urged the Government of Lima to abolish administrative policies that allow the forced sterilization of mentally handicapped .
Currently, the committee reported, they can be sterilized "without their free and informed consent" in a practice that takes place as a "method of contraception."
He also expressed concern that there are no rehabilitation services for 81 percent of the disabled population and only 1.42 percent of people with this problem is covered by social security programs.
Moreover, the report draws attention to the lack of programs for early detection of deafness in children.
In this context, the UN agency urged the Government of Peru to develop comprehensive health programs to ensure that disabled people are addressed specifically and have access to rehabilitation services and general health.
