Malawi: Mysterious deaths hit Malawian family
Blantyre, Malawi - Four people of the same family in the southern Lower Shire Valley district of Chikhwawa have died in what hospital officials suspect could be anything from food poisoning, severe malaria or meningitis. 'We're currently doing tests,' said Chikhwawa District Hospital Nursing Technician, Osman Asani, in a telephone interview.
Asani said a woman and her eight-year-old child were brought to a clinic in the district after displaying strange symptoms. They were later referred to Chikhwawa District Hospital.
'While we were attending to the two we learnt that a 15-year-old child and her nine-year-old sibling of the same family died suddenly at the village,' said Asani.
He said the mother and daughter also later died.
'We're are yet to pin-point the cause of these mysterious deaths but they were displaying stiffness of limbs, they were also vomiting,' he said.
