Monday, April 26, 2010
April 26, 2010, 8:29 La Paz, Apr 26 (Prensa Latina) Bolivian health authorities today urged the population to be immunized against influenza A (H1N1) and set aside a media campaign to discredit the immunization.
Speaking on national television, the director of the Departmental Service of Health in Pando (North), Boris Burgo, criticized the reluctance of some sectors of the population to receive the drug.
It's being driven by some media or completely false Internet reports as to the ineffectiveness or side effects of the vaccine, he said.
The official confirmed that the same procedure was applied previously in the Andean country and did not cause major problems.
The people gradually have to see that this will be of benefit to them, he added.
The Bolivian government announced plans to invest about three billion dollars in the purchase of one million 300 thousand doses of vaccines for the campaign to prevent the flu.
According to the Ministry of Health in Bolivia have been reported so far over 220 suspected cases, of which six were confirmed: four in Santa Cruz (East), one in Beni (northeastern) and one in Potos? (south). Last year in the nation reported more than two thousand five hundred confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) and 59 deaths were recorded.
