There were 22 new WNV human cases reported in California this week from the following counties: Fresno (2), Kern (2), Los Angeles (2), Madera (1), Orange (7), Sacramento (2), San Joaquin (1), Shasta (1), and Stanislaus (4). These are the first WNV human cases from Los Angeles, San Joaquin, and Shasta counties this year.
4 WNV human fatalities from Sacramento (1), Shasta (1), and Stanislaus (2) counties have been confirmed this year.

As of August 12th, One hundred and twenty-four cases of WNV have been found in twenty states and the District of Columbia. Arizona (14), Arkansas (1), California (33), Colorado (7), District of Columbia (1), Georgia (1), Indiana (1), Iowa (4), Louisiana (23), Mississippi (7), Missouri (1), Nebraska (6), New Jersey (1), New York (1), North Dakota (2), Oklahoma (1), Pennsylvania (1), South Dakota (15), Tennessee (2), Texas (1) and Wisconsin (1). Sixty-three cases (51%) were neuroinvasive. Seven fatalities have been reported. Arizona (2), California (1), Louisiana (2), Mississippi (1) and Missouri (1).

Thirty-seven Presumptive Viremic Blood Donors have been reported in ten states. Arizona (4), California (11), Colorado (2), Louisiana (6), Minnesota (2), Mississippi (2), Nebraska (2), New Mexico (1), Texas (1) and Wisconsin (6).

DHH Confirms 13 New West Nile Virus Cases this Week; 42 Total Cases this Year

This week, the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals (DHH) confirmed 13 new cases of West Nile virus, of which five were neuroinvasive disease infections, bringing this year's total to 42 reported cases.

DHH issues a weekly Arbovirus Surveillance Report that details cases detected thus far by parish. This week's new infections include neuroinvasive disease cases in Caddo (3), East Baton Rouge (1) and Livingston (1) parishes. There were also new cases of West Nile fever reported from Caddo (4), Calcasieu (1) and East Baton Rouge (1) parishes, and asymptomatic cases in Ascension (1) and East Baton Rouge (1) parishes. SAN JOSE -- In a record West Nile virus season that has seen infected birds literally dropping out of trees, officials on Friday announced what they said was no surprise: Five human cases have cropped up countywide in recent weeks.

Two women, ages 60 and 79, were hospitalized when the disease manifested itself in its potentially deadly, neuroinvasive form. Both developed encephalitis, and one remains in the hospital in serious condition. Another case involves an 84-year-old man who was treated for the less serious but still debilitating West Nile fever, while the other two cases -- men aged 59 and 60 -- never exhibited any symptoms at all and were only discovered through a routine blood donor screening...

Two Sutter County women have died from West Nile virus. That would raise the number of West Nile deaths statewide to six, with one each in Shasta and Sacramento counties and two in Stanislaus.

The Sutter County Public Health Division reported the women died earlier this month, but provided no information as to location. One had the neuroinvasive form of WNV, the most severe form of the illness...

Tenth case of human West Nile virus confirmed in The Woodlands (Texas)

A day after the Montgomery County Commissioners OKed aerial spaying to stop the spread of West Nile virus in the county, health officials confirmed the tenth case human case in South Montgomery County Tuesday.

As the number of cases grow, county health officials were notified last week by state health officials that additional efforts were needed to address the issue...

2nd case of West Nile confirmed in Oklahoma

TULSA, Okla. (AP) ? Health officials in Tulsa have confirmed a second human case of the potentially fatal West Nile virus in Oklahoma this year.

The Tulsa Health Department confirmed the case on Thursday. The first confirmed case was in July in Major County.

Few details about the persons infected have been released, other than the person infected in Major County is over the age of 50...
