Whooping Cough Infects 4 in Northern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) About 100 elementary school children in northern Utah have been told to stay home until further notice after four cases of whooping cough were confirmed, health officials said Friday.

The latest health threat comes on the heels of a recent measles outbreak in the Salt Lake City area that began with an unimmunized student who traveled to Poland.

Jill Parker, spokeswoman for the Bear River Health Department, said it is difficult to tell how many others are at risk of contracting whooping cough beyond the 100 unimmunized students at three schools near Logan, about 80 miles north of Salt Lake City...

Another case of whooping cough has been confirmed in Cache County.

The Bear River Health Department reports that a student who attends Mountain Crest High School in Hyrum has tested positive.

That brings the total number of confirmed cases in the county to five. Other schools that have had confirmed cases include Spring Creek Middle School in Providence, Thomas Edison Charter School South in Nibley, and Heritage Elementary in Nibley...

When Liz Pulver?s infant daughter got a cough this winter, she decided to record it on her cellphone so her doctor could hear it. She was worried: Babies like hers are too young to be immunized.

The doctor confirmed that indeed the girl had pertussis, making her one of the 310 Salt Lake County residents infected last year, ranging from 3 weeks to 88 years old. Only 176 residents had the infection the year before...

Whooping cough outbreak continues in Cache County: New case at Summit Elementary raises total to 12

The whooping cough outbreak in Cache County continues, with confirmed cases now reported at three local schools.

In all, there have been 12 confirmed cases, with the latest coming late Tuesday afternoon at Summit Elementary in Smithfield. There have also been nine cases at North Park Elementary in North Logan and two at Cedar Ridge Middle School in Hyde Park.

'Unusually high number' of pertussis reports

CLEARFIELD -- An "unusually high number" of pertussis reports involving school-aged adolescents have put area health officials on heightened alert.

During the past few weeks, Davis County Health Department has seen a high number of pertussis cases, said Bob Ballew, county health public information officer.

And Davis County is not alone.

Increases in cases and school outbreaks have also been reported in Cache, Box Elder, Salt Lake, Weber and Morgan counties, health officials said.

This year to date Weber-Morgan Health Department has received 36 confirmed cases of pertussis, aka whooping cough, compared to a total of 25 cases in all of last year, said Lori Buttars, Weber-Morgan County Health public information officer.

From January to mid-May of this year, Davis County Health has seen 18 cases of pertussis, double the number of cases the department saw in 2011 during the same time period, according to statistics provided by Davis County Health officials...
