Mystery illness stumps Tooele school officials

TOOELE ? Officials are still trying to find out why a significant number of students at one school got sick at the same time.

About 30 students at Clark N Johnsen Junior High went home ill Thursday morning with flu-like symptoms, said Ken Luke, assistant superintendent of the Tooele County School District. But the district maintenance office, Tooele Health Department and members of the Utah Division of Risk Management couldn't find anything wrong at the school.

"I invited our district maintenance to come over and look for any obvious leaks of gas or something that might be affecting them," Luke said. "Utah state risk management happened to be out doing normal inspections of buildings. They came over and walked the building as well. We also had the health department come with their air 'sniffers.' No one could find anything at all."

Commonalities between students were examined, but the health department couldn't find anything there, spokesman Bucky Whitehouse said.

If it was influenza, then it's unlikely that they would all start showing symptoms the same day. I wonder if Legionella has been considered.

No staff at the school got sick. The ill students came from all over the building as well, meaning it wasn't pinned down to one classroom or one area.

"Maybe there was something psychosomatic with some kids seeing other kids going home sick, but of course that wouldn't account for everybody," said Luke.

Luke says most of the students are back at school Friday and things are normal. Officials will continue to investigate and monitor attendance rates.
