A dozen inmates at the Utah State Prison are hospitalized with suspected botulism believed to have come from homemade alcohol brewed inside a cell.

Salt Lake Valley Health Department officials said Wednesday that "pruno" was made inside a cell, then shared around the cell block. The Utah Department of Corrections refused to say which facility the inmates are in, citing security reasons...

SALT LAKE CITY ? A weeks-old baked potato was blamed for a botulism outbreak at a Utah prison where inmates drank alcohol brewed in cells, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The outbreak sickened eight maximum-security inmates at the state prison in Salt Lake County on October 2011, making it the largest incident of botulism tied to prison-made brew, often referred to as "pruno," the CDC said in a report released last week...

Jailhouse wine -- also known as hooch, spud juice and pruno -- sickened eight inmates in Utah after it was tainted with a dangerous bacteria that leads to botulism, according to a case study published this month in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
