Senior citizen dies of swine flu in Lucknow

Lucknow : Swine flu has claimed the life of a retired doctor here, an official said Wednesday. Dr S.B. Singh, a physiotherapist who had retired from the King George's Medical College (KGMC), was admitted to hospital with high grade fever and cough a few days back and succumbed Tuesday.

Dr R.K. Mishra, director of the private hospital, told IANS that blood samples of Dr Singh, 65, were sent to a private pathology lab last week. It was found that the retired doctor had been infected with swine flu virus. He was administered tamiflu, but could not be saved and died of respiratory failure.

Of five swine flu cases, three are from SGPGI

The Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Wednesday confirmed five positive cases of swine flu in Lucknow. Two of the five are technicians and one is an employee of the institute itself ? all of who live near SGPGI campus. The exact sources of how they came in contact with the virus is, however, still not known. A team led by Chief Medical Officer (Lucknow) will now try to find how they got infected.

4 new cases of swine flu near SGPGI

LUCKNOW: Four new confirmed cases of swine flu were reported from Eldeco Colony area on Rae Bareli Road on Thursday. Samples of 16 suspect patients were sent to the microbiology department of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, four of them were found to be positive. With this, the total number of swine flu cases in the city has gone up to nine.

H1N1 sprouts in several UP districts, 5 new cases reported

LUCKNOW: Swab samples of two suspected persons from Kanpur and two others from Lucknow tested positive and confirmed H1N1 infection at the microbiology lab of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Saturday. Besides this, a suspected case of swine flu was also referred from Gonda district hospital to Trauma Centre of King George's Medical University. Later on, it was found that he was suffering from H1N1 infection. Swab samples from Bareilly and Sultanpur are also awaiting confirmation at the SGPGIMS lab.

LUCKNOW: Six out of 35 samples sent to the microbiology department of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences from Lucknow have confirmed presence of swine flu virus. The report was received by the office of chief medical officer (CMO) on Tuesday morning. With this, the total number of persons who tested positive to H1N1 infection touched 20. Another 20 samples are currently being analysed by microbiologists at the SGPGI.

City reports eight fresh H1N1 cases, total tally reaches 49

LUCKNOW: Eight fresh positive cases of H1N1 infection were reported on Saturday out of 22 samples, which went for examination at the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences. And if, SGPGI sources are to be believed, then majority of the cases reported at SGPGI emanated from Lucknow. On Friday, out of 41 samples, which went for H1N1 confirmation, 13 tested positive. With this, the total count of H1N1 positive cases has reached 49.

10 out of 40 samples test H1N1 positive

LUCKNOW: As many as 10 out of 40 samples examined by microbiologists at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) tested positive to H1N1 infection, taking the total number of affected persons to 66. Head of department Prof TN Dhole informed that 14 samples were still pending confirmation. "Of the total cases seen so far, 95% belong to category A of H1N1 which is not life-threatening. Therefore, residents of the city should not panic," he said.

Swine flu patients swell to 56 in Lucknow

Lucknow, Sep 3 ? The number of people confirmed positive with the deadly swine flu virus has risen to 56 in the Uttar Pradesh capital, officials said, as they stepped up efforts to check its further spread.

The spurt in the cases related to the deadly virus has sent alarm bells ringing in the state health department as the number has swelled up in just a fortnight. The virus as of now has infected 56 people, an official said.

The first swine flu case was reported Aug 22 when a retired doctor fell prey to the H1N1 virus and died later.

After this, five people tested positive though the disease showed localized presence in and around the Sultanpur road here and near the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science (SGPGIMS).

Of the recent patients tested positive for the disease, two have come from Bihar while one has come from Madhya Pradesh.

S.N. Yadav, chief medical officer (CMO) Lucknow has said that hospitals have been alerted about symptoms of swine flu and to take extra precautions while screening patients with similar symptoms.

T.N. Dhole, head of SGPGI's microbiology department said that precautions were being taken to arrest further spread of the virus. Three of the infected people were SGPGI staffers, two of them technicians. The other two are from the city's Telibagh area.

Swine flu cases in city touch 100 mark

LUCKNOW: The total number of swine flu cases in the city inched close to 100 on Tuesday. Microbiology department at Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences confirmed that six persons tested positive for H1N1 infection. The number would surely swell further considering that three dozen samples were pending for testing with the authorities.

Pijiai campus and two people have died of swine flu. Pijiai thus far are more than 90 people die of the infection. According to CMO office in the capital so far 108 people have been confirmed as swine flu.
CMO Dr SNS Yadav said that 400 people have been provided at the Medical University of the investigation. Two people got the infection, but both are healthy person. He does not need to be afraid of swine flu.

'H1N1 virus was present near Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute'

LUCKNOW: The committee formed to find the reason behind the spread of H1N1 virus in the city has concluded that the virus was circulating in and around the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute (SGPGI). The committee, which submitted its report on Monday, said that swab sample of 466 patients suffering with flu like symptoms were selected randomly. The samples were examined for H1N1 infection at the microbiology department of King George's Medical University (KGMU), CMO Lucknow, Dr SNS Yadav said

The committee, formed in September first week by the chief medical officer (CMO), was headed by KGMU dean and public health expert Prof JV Singh.

More than 12.6% of the patients tested positive to swine flu virus. Most of the patients were from Sarojaninagar, Mohanlalganj and SGPGI campus. An analysis of the patients revealed that they stay in Ektanagar, Sabha Kheda and Krishna vihar - localities inhabited by SGPGI employees and their families, making the researchers conclude that the swine flu virus was being circulated from the apex medical institute.

CMO said the swine flu virus was isolated and studied. He, however, said there was no need to worry. "The virus has become very weak and doesn't need the tamiflu treatment till a patient belongs to the risk category which comprises pregnant women, elderly and patients suffering from chronic diseases, particularly lung infection," he said. Doctors stress on preventive measures, particularly sneeze hygiene and washing of hands, to limit infection. They also say that 90% of H1N1 cases are not fatal, so one should not panic.

Barabanki woman tests H1N1-positive, hospitalised


LUCKNOW: Though the season for swine flu is officially over, one person who tested H1N1-positive was admitted to the Balrampur Hospital here on Sunday. The patient is a 44 year old woman who was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Barabanki. Experts said the season may be over in India, but there are certain countries where the virus is circulating. Doctors at Balrampur hospital have sent the patient's swab samples to confirm presence of the infection. They also said they were not able to ascertain where she got the infection from, but said once the lab confirmed they would ask local administration in Barabanki to hold a mop-up exercise. It may be recalled that swine flu affected more than 100 persons in the city this year. Most of the patients hailed from areas around the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of medical sciences.
