Area's first measles case in over 20 years

Updated 2:49 pm: The Charlottesville-Albemarle Health Department announced Thursday that there have been three cases of measles in the area, warning that one case may have been infectious last Friday at locations in Charlottesville.

Exposures may have occurred on May 20 at the Charlottesville Waldorf School, outside the Paramount Theater between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m., Marco & Luca Dumpling Store between 6:30 and 9 p.m. and Chap?s Ice Cream between 7 and 9:30 p.m. Officials said the cases were being made public out of ?an abundance of caution.?

Health officials said an adult female contracted measles while traveling in India, and two others have developed measles after having social contact with her. The first case was confirmed on May 19, according to Dr. Lilian Peake, the director of the Thomas Jefferson Health District. The two other cases are considered probable, but have yet to be confirmed through lab testing...

There is a fourth suspected case of measles for the Thomas Jefferson Health District to worry about on Tuesday night...

...The suspected fourth case is adult female in Charlottesville. It appears she contracted it from the first case. The health department did have knowledge of this, and has been monitoring this woman, checking in everyday to see how she is doing...

Measles exposure to keep some from returning to school

A group of students at the Charlottesville Waldorf School will spend their last week of classes at home after a measles scare last month.

Officials at the school declined on Monday to say how many of their 174 students will remain home this week because they were not vaccinated when exposed to measles on May 20. The last day of school at CWS is Friday.

Four people in Charlottesville are continuing to recover after contracting measles last month, according to Dr. Lilian Peake, director of the Thomas Jefferson Health District.

Amanda Tipton, school coordinator at CWS, said one of those four measles cases is a CWS student.

But Tipton said she would not release how many of the school?s students were exposed and not vaccinated...
