Viral vaccine attacks prostate tumors, study shows
JORNALFLORIPA 22/06/2011 1:00 a.m.

Experiments performed in mice by an international team of scientists have succeeded in the task of encouraging the body to teach the animals to fight prostate tumors.

The laboratory rodents received a therapeutic cancer vaccine, made from genes that are active only in the prostate.

With this, your body's own defenses mobilized to fight tumors that were already established. In 80% of cases, the disease was eventually eliminated.

Although it takes years of studies before the new approach can be tested in humans, and problems associated with them may end up appearing, but research seems to have achieved progress in a crucial point: how to induce the attack on cancer cells without harming the rest of the body.

The study just published in the online version of the journal Nature Medicine. The team, led by Alan Melcher of the University of Leeds in northern Britain, enlisted the help of a virus to the task (see infographic above).

It is increasingly common viral allies are used to design therapies involving DNA. In the case of VSV (vesicular stomatitis virus, the English acronym), the interest arose because he is naturally able to attack certain tumors.

As the effects in humans do not usually move from a flu-like symptoms, it is considered relatively safe to work with the virus. This time, however, interest was to use it as a vehicle for the active genes in the prostate.

These genes, obtained from normal human prostates (not cancer) were smuggled into the genetic material of the VSV and injected into mice.

Viruses, in turn, did the dirty job of inducing the high production of molecules typical of the prostate, whose income is contained in the genes chosen by scientists. One is the PSA, just used to diagnose prostate tumors.

Given the increased presence of specific substances of the body, and the action itself of the virus, the body of mice was stimulated to react against the cancer.

This probably happened because the molecules derived from prostate tissue were read as foreign by the body, so that he would interpret the invasion of a parasite, scientists say.

At the same time, healthy tissues of the prostate of mice that were not attacked when treatment was systemic, that is, when the viruses were simply injected into the bloodstream.

It is not clear yet why. Scientists speculate, however, that the passage of the altered virus in the blood would help boost the immune system response (defense).

Another neat trick, considering the experiment would be to use genes linked to prostate of other species of mammal, because it also seems to strengthen the body's defense reaction.
