'Virus left our son unable to walk or talk'

A five-year-old boy was left fighting for his life after contracting a mystery virus.
Charlie Marsden was paralysed and put on a life support machine after being struck down by the bug. Now, after three months, he is making a slow recovery but still remains unable to walk, talk or eat.

The ordeal began in December when Charlie woke up screaming that he could not hear. Those were the last words he spoke. The couple took him to a doctor and were told he had tonsillitis and an ear infection. He was then taken to Basildon Hospital where doctors initially told the couple it was suspected meningitis or encephalitis. He was eventually transferred to St Mary's Hospital and put on a life support machine.
