Three swine flu victims in critical care

28/9/2009

The NPHS influenza surveillance scheme, which records reports of diagnoses of flu from more than 300 GP practices across Wales, shows low levels of influenza activity across Wales.

On 24 September, the rate of diagnosis of flu-like illness at a local level ranged from 10.5 per 100,000 people in Ceredigion, to 46.4 per 100,000 people in Merthyr Tydfil.

As at 10am on 23 September, there have been a total of 129 laboratory confirmed cases of swine flu in Wales since the start of the outbreak.

As at 10am on 23 September of the laboratory confirmed cases, a total of 53 had been admitted to hospital since the start of the outbreak with five still in hospital.

On 23 September, there were 11 clinically diagnosed patients in hospital in connection with swine flu, of whom three were in critical care.

One person with swine flu in Wales has died.

Dr Roland Salmon, Director of the Communicable Disease Centre, National Public Health Service for Wales, said: ?We knew the virus hadn't gone away. We always expected that when people came back from their holidays it would provide the opportunity for the virus to get going again. Following good personal hygiene advice is the best way to protect people from its impact.

?People with flu like symptoms should check their symptoms on www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk or by calling the Swine Flu Information Line on 0800 1 513 513.

?Most people will get better at home with rest, plenty of fluids, and medication such as paracetamol.

?If symptoms worsen or people have underlying health problems they should phone their GP. People should not go to Accident and Emergency Departments, a pharmacy or to their GP surgery unless advised to do so as this may risk spreading the infection. It also places undue pressure on the emergency services."
