Girl, 4, latest swine flu victim in Wales

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD girl has been confirmed as the latest sufferer of swine flu.
The tot from Cardiff is one of 88 laboratory confirmed cases, and joins a two-year-old boy ? also living in the capital ? who has been diagnosed with the potentially fatal bug.
Wales? medical leaders believe the H1N1 virus is continuing to spread across the country, revealing that in the last seven days 4,209 people have consulted their GP about flu-like symptoms.
Dr Roland Salmon, of the National Public Health Service for Wales, said: ?The rise in the number of people contacting their GP with flu-like symptoms illustrates the spread of the disease across Wales.?
Over the past week, 462 people living in the Welsh capital have contacted their doctor about symptoms related to influenza. A further 296 people have spoken to medical advisers in Caerphilly, while 217 people in Rhondda Cynon Taf have made contact with their GP with concerns relating to the virus.
Anecdotal evidence from GP practices in South Wales has shown the number of inquiries relating to the virus has started to fall.
Dr David Bailey, chairman of the British Medical Association in Wales? GP committee, told the Echo: ?This week has been a little quieter than the one before, and I think that in some areas in Wales ? Caerphilly, where I work, Newport and Swansea ? it does not seem to have been as busy in terms of surgeries answering calls related to swine flu.
?This is as we would expect with the school holidays starting. Perhaps we will see a return to higher numbers as the weather becomes colder and we all become more prone to these things, but for the minute, the number of calls seems to have gone down.?
Since the outbreak hit Wales in April, a total of 23 people have been hospitalised with swine flu, all now discharged.
One of the most high-profile figures caught up in the pandemic has been Bluebirds boss Dave Jones.
On Tuesday, the Cardiff City manager was given the all-clear after being treated for suspected swine flu.
Jones, 52, was on medication after coming down with flu-like symptoms and following fears his teenage daughter had contracted the potentially-deadly bug.
It emerged later that day she too had been given the all-clear by doctors.
Jones is expected to sit in the dugout for the side?s clash with Valencia today.
Elsewhere in the UK, an eight-year-old girl is among four deaths being linked to the bug in London. The four, included in the 27 deaths for England confirmed by the Government on Thursday, all had underlying health conditions.
The youngster passed away at St Thomas? Hospital on Sunday. A man died there on July 21 and a woman died on July 15 at Northwich Park Hospital in North London.
