The Cowlitz County Health Department has reported a recent significant increase of pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

Between May 5 and May 14, eight confirmed pertussis cases and six suspected cases have been reported in people between the ages of 2 months and 53 years. The health department typically sees between two to five cases per year...

Four confirmed whooping cough cases in Pierce County in the past two weeks have local health authorities worried about a possible epidemic.
Whooping cough, known in medical circles as pertussis, is highly contagious and one of the most commonly occurring vaccine-preventable diseases in the United States.
In a health advisory issued Thursday, the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department announced that, in addition to the four confirmed whooping cough cases, four suspected cases have been reported in Pierce County since late June.

Third case of whooping cough reported in Grant County

MOSES LAKE ? The third case of whooping cough in nine days has been reported by Grant County Health District officials. The third case is an infant.

?With a third confirmed case, Grant County is at risk of entering into a full pertussis outbreak,? said Dr. Alexander Brzezny, Grant County health officer, in a news release.

He urged people who spend time with children to make sure they are fully immunized against whooping cough, also called pertussis. ?Nearly all? infants with pertussis get the infection from an infected adult, he said.

One of the earlier cases resulted in the death on Aug. 24 of a Grant County infant, health district officials said. The child in the second case is recovering from the illness.

Jefferson Ketchel, health district administrator, said this morning that health officials are trying to determine if there is a connection linking the infected children but no connection has been confirmed so far...

Additional case of whooping cough found in Kittitas County

A third laboratory-confirmed case of pertussis has been identified in Kittitas County, according to a news release from Kittitas County Public Health Department.

In addition to the three laboratory-confirmed cases, there are five cases with known exposure and cough lasting more than two weeks, the release said. All but one of the cases are associated with Thorp School District...

Pertussis strikes Oak Harbor schools

Students and parents have been notified that an Oak Harbor High School student and Hillcrest Elementary School teacher have been diagnosed with pertussis, more commonly referred to as whooping cough. Both of the individuals came down with a persistent cough and are getting treated with antibiotics.

According to Communicable Disease Coordinator Katie Hicks of Island County Public Health, there have been three confirmed cases of pertussis on Whidbey Island in the past month, but none of them have required hospitalization.
