India toxic alcohol kills 143 in West Bengal
At least 143 people are now known to have died after consuming toxic alcohol in India's West Bengal state.

Residents of 12 villages in the South 24 Parganas district fell ill after drinking the alcohol. Ten people have been arrested.

Dozens more people are being treated in hospital, with fears the death toll could rise. Many died at home, fearing police would take action against them.

CANNING/KOLKATA: Grief overtook West Bengal's Sangrampur and neighbouring villages as the toll in the state's worst-ever illicit liquor tragedy leapfrogged to 148 amid fears of further rise in casualties with over 100 victims including labourers, rickshaw-pullers and hawkers still battling for life in three hospitals.

The victims fell ill after consuming spurious liquor from several illegal joints on Tuesday night. Preliminary investigations suggest that the deaths occurred due to methyl alcohol toxicity which led to respiratory and cardiac failure. Officials said that 119 deaths were reported alone in Diamond Harbour sub-divisional hospital, followed by M R Bangur (23) rpt (23) and National Medical College and Hospital(6).

Condition of about 50 victims was critical in the three hospitals, doctors said adding the toll is likely to go up.

Canning (WB), Dec 16 (PTI) Deaths in the worst-ever hooch tragedy in West Bengal continued unabated today with the toll touching 171 amidst fears of more casualties as authorities suspended the excise officer-in-charge for dereliction of duty. The Officer-in-charge of Excise department in Diamond Harbour, Radheshyam Pande, was today suspended on charge of dereliction of duty, South 24-Parganas district police superintendent L N Meena said. According to the Chief Medical Officer (Health) S Adhikary, the killer hooch claimed 171 lives in Diamond Harbour sub-divisional hospital, M R Bangur hospital and at National Medical college and hospital. She said that nearly 90 victims were still under treatment in the hospitals where condition of some was critical.
